So If I were to start at the beginning, basically having never seen any of these, should I skip any? Is there any sort of arc or are they all pretty much self contained?
Aside from the Daniel Craig ones they’re all stand alone.
skip em all until Casino Royale.
They are a product of their time.
People will SAY the Con Seannery ones are the best, but that’s because that’s what you’re expected to say.
Truth is that they’re incredibly slow paced and when something finally does happen the “effects” are so abysmal (who needs fast cars in a chase scene? just fuck with the film speed instead! it’s just as good!) and choreography so ancient (dudes are clearly throwing punches 4 feet away from intended target) that it’s just hokey. That’s not to say there arent defects out their that like that type of shit. Call them Dr. Who fans or whatever. But really, the Bond films dont hold up, and I used to love bond.
Yeah they’re also a bit on the offensive side nowadays as well. Although I do still have a love for Goldeneye
I thought Daniel Craig sucked. Maybe not his fault but the recent JB films are so uninspired, they feel like a bunch of paint-by-the-numbers action films. I like Jason Bourne films so much better.
incorrect.
though quantum of solace was a total snoozefest.
Casino Royale and Spectre’s openings were visual feasts.
So the correct answer is, read the books.
You don't really need to watch in any order but I started with the Daniel Craig Casino Royale and went retroactively. It helped me understand what was outstanding and what was kinda meh about the series. You Only Live Twice is FANTASTIC, the others can be variable.
oooookay.
go watch your shakey cam mc greenglass bourne movies then.
Only the Supremacy was bad for shakey cam, the first and 3rd were perfectly fine. Maybe you need glasses?
you’re highing.
I like the bourne movies, but c’mon. they are to shakey cam what transformers is to orange and teal.
I concede Supremacy on the shakey cam, but the first and third are perfectly fine. The action scenes in those 2 are sublime. Not sure what more to say if you can't follow them.
Sean Connery's Bond was pretty dark. He'd aim the back of a bad girl (he'd slept with the night before) towards a bullet meant for him and not even show a bit of remorse. He'd also jack up people by hanging them or dropping them into pools of fire. He was a cold hearted killer.
I like Roger Moore's version of Bond. He was charming, had a good sense of humor, and he always had a sort of respect for his enemies. He's the best of the Bond actors.
Moonraker and Quantum of Solace are the ones I consider terrible. Tomorrow Never Dies is rather oof too. Saying they are a product of their time is really the best way of putting it. Going back decades with these is interesting in watching how films were made in each era. I watched Dr. No in theatres a few months ago and it's kinda amazing how slow it is (in every regard) compared to the last 20 years or so of cinema. There are surprising bursts of gore here and there too. I think it's in HMSS where a guy runs into a snow plow and a gyster of blood shoots out. IIRC one of the Timothy Dalton ones has a meaty head explosion.
Goldeneye is easily the best Pierce Brosnan one and Casino Royale and Skyfall are the best of Daniel Craig. I love Skyfall.
Does James Bond smirkily rape his way through every movie?
Watch em all in order of release. Yes they are a product of their time but watching the new ones first is only going to confuse things. Ignore all these Craig fanboys.
They are live action "Man's Man in the Cold War" cartoons with a sprinkle of Britain wishing it was still relevant in world events, and should not be taken too seriously. Watch em like that and you'll appreciate them a little more.
Also watch them with the understanding that the world is a whole lot smaller than it used to be. Things like the Internet were so far beyond what most people could even begin to conceive of for most of the franchise, jet travel was still in its infancy when this thing really kicked off and people didn't really expect to see Hong Kong or even the Bahamas, so seeing them in a movie was almost as good. Bond really capitalized on that. MI6 and the CIA must have super fancy gadgets that nobody has ever seen, because how else are they going to spy on people. Etc. And when you get into the villains, each of them had to have their own lair. Seeing what Ken Adam would come up with for the next one was always a treat, until they went away from it.
Lastly the quality really varies after each Bond is introduced. Each new Bond gets a good or great movie, and then it's up and down until the franchise recasts. It even happens to Craig. You should probably stop at Goldeneye. It's the last really great Bond movie.
Error makes some very good points.
Maybe Mr. Superhero Film Lover has the patience and attention span for the old Bonds- but I don’t think so.
I’m watching Bourne Ultimatum right now. The longest the camera is allowed to stay in place without major shake or a cut is 3 seconds. Even during exposition dumps. It’s ridiculously over the top.
I enjoyed the first Bourne movie but thought the camerawork was a bit nuts, then I saw the next two and wished for the calm steady pace of the first one.
yes.
You're wrong though. You're also just a dirty son of a WAH NAH WAH NAH WAH
I’d be happy to be wrong!
Her name is Pussy Galore. Let’s not act like she wasn’t open for business.
So she was asking for it? She certainly was acting like she wasn't interested in Bond's rapecock. But, obviously, all women want it they just pretend to resist because it's part of the game? The scene that launched a thousand date rapes.
Watch the scene in context of the movie and maybe you'll think differently.
pfft, context.
That Dalton one is Licence to Kill. Not bad. They show a more brutal side of 007 here, & it is one of the more graphic ones.
Goldeneye is great... maybe one of my top 3 favorite JB movies. One part I loved in Goldeneye was where 007 asks "Who's strangling the cat". In Soviet Russia, cat strangle you! :D
Goldeneye was great. I think it's the only good Brosnan one, but it's really good.
I love the Bond films but as it has already been pointed out, they're very period-specific and need to be watched within that context. I grew up with Roger Moore and he was always "my" Bond, but in retrospect many of his films are relentlessly campy. I saw the Connery stuff later on and appreciated their slightly harder edge, but they were pretty shitty in their portrayals of most of the women, like in Goldfinger when Bond needs to engage in "man talk" and smacks a bikini-clad girl on the ass to shoo her off.
I recall Moore smacking around a few women as well, in addition to all of the rampant insta-fucking of random, nameless vaginas that's a Bond trademark. I was actually pleasantly shocked that this aspect was kept to a minimum in Casino Royale.
Yeah, it's still creepy. Pussy Galore was originally written as a lesbian in Ian Fleming's novel, and the general disinterest in men aspect carried over into the movie pretty strongly up until that point of that scene.
I remember watching a documentary on Bond Girls, hosted by a former Bond Girl who appeared quite bitter from her experience, that was fairly critical of how many of the female characters were portrayed and the overall rapey aspects of the films, but I can't find it. There's one called Bond Girls Are Forever, but after watching a few clips on YouTube that doesn't appear to be it (unless I'm remembering it differently).
I never really understood the appeal of James Bond films. They're very bland as action flicks, and very dumb as spy movies.
A View To a Kill is A+++
Duran Duran, Christopher Walken, Grace Jones. Good times.
I understand the appeal of Bond, but it's very a specifically a patriarchal fantasy kind of appeal. You're saving the world because YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE, you drink some nice martinis, get a fancy car, have fun, gamble, go to fancy dinner parties, somebody talks back to you smack 'em in the mouth and if they're a girl, you kiss 'em afterwards. Also, gadgets!
Goldeneye was the only Bond movie I really got in to. Brosnan's others were terrible. Craig has been OK. Casino Royale and Skyfall were pretty great. Quantum of Solace was mostly boring (but not bad), and Spectre (the latest) was terrible. I've watched a few Sean Connery ones back when I was a kid and I liked them, but have a hard time taking them seriously now.
Let's not forget about James Bond Jr.
I think the world agreed to forget about James Bond Jr.
What about James Pond?
