The Card Battle Thread

Let's talk about Card games. :)

I have recently gotten into Cardfighter's Clash for NGPC. It's the first and only card game I have -- but I ADORE it. It is insanely addictive and oodles of fun. I actually just picked it up on a lark. I was bored and figured I would try it. It took a while for me to "get it", but once I got past the learning curve I became hopelessly addicted. That's especially impressive because I don't know or care much about 90% of the characters in the game. The game is so good though!

Anyway, since I love this game so much, I'd like to hear some more about other card games. I have been meaning to pick up Culdcept II for Japanese Dreamcast, and after reading some reviews and FAQs and the Culdcept thread here a few months ago, I decided I should probably give it a chance. So I plan on getting that one soon....

What are some other good "card games"? :)

The problem for me is that no other card game was my beloved Capcom and SNK characters. Maybe the Phantasy Star one will have the Mega Drive characters? Please?

I guess you can include Lost Kingdoms since it's a card type game. Castlevania: Cirle of the Moon also has "cards" but probably not the way you wanted to play with them. Yi-gi-oh is another card battle type game too although I don't know how good it is, I imagine a card pokemon game. Anyways check those out in reviews or rent them if you want.

BTW STAY AWAY from DBZ card battle.

Well, the lack of knowledge of the characters didn't have much impact on my love for CFC. I don't like 2D fighting games so a lot of the Capcom and SNK characters have little to no meaning for me.. I don't care much about the RE characters... and so on. ---- But, I do think that if the game was populated by characters which I actually cared about I would love it even more -- so much so something like a Sega card game would be off the charts. ;)

I had forgotten about the upcoming Phantasy Star Card Battle game. I am definitely looking forward to that one though! :)

Shadows of the Tusk for Sega Saturn is worth checking out.

It's sort of a cross-breed of Tactics Ogre and Magic: the Gathering.

There is a Genso Suikoden Card Battle game for GBA which unfortunately is only available in Japan, one of the better card games I played lus it has all the Suikoden characters in it which is pretty cool :)

The Yu-gi-oh GBA games are actually really good. The newest one, number 7, seems to be the funnest to play. The duals are shorter than the previous ones (like Yugioh 6 expert 2, and yugioh 5) I don't give a shit about the show, but the games are worth a try.

Another good handheld card game is Pokemon for the GBC. Yeah yeah it's Pokemon, but oh well. It's a nice card game that's really simple to learn and hey you might love Pokemon. Its worth a try.

Card Fighters Clash is the best NGPC game out there. the game is sooo fuckin good that at one point my NGPC was the only system i was playing.

I'm a huge fan of Card Battle games actually.

I still need to pickup the Pokemon, and Monster Rancher card games, but they look pretty sweet.

And I STILL haven't seen any pics of that Phantasy Star card game, does anybody have info or screenies on it?

yes. i have to agree.

better then anything on GBA. like i've said many times, no matter how fuckin amazing the line up on GBA is, there's no Card Fighters Clash on it, and that'll always hurt the system really really bad in my eyes.

I guess I better look up some info on it. :)

I thought Yu-gi-oh only came out on GBC and PSone recently.

Sorry, I was talking about the GBA imports of Yu-gi-oh. The only USA versoin I know of are some lame GBC and DUAL MONSTAS for the PSX.

Well there is quite a bit, there is a main story so you lose that but the menus are easy enough to figure out so playing it isn't overly difficult.

Let's talk strategy! How'd everyone else play?
My favorite (and nigh unbeatable) strategy was to wait for the opponent to put out his cards. Then, I put out cards that are 100-200 HP under those cards. I wait for an attack, then slap that card with a counter. This knocks the card down to 100 HP or so. So, after the other guy has his field filled with useless 100 HP cards, I let him hit me until I have my heavy-hitters out. Then I knock him silly with Unites. Better yet still, I might be lucky enough to draw the card that KOs all cards with 400 or under HP. THEN it's fun.
Another fun method was to depend on those Akumas and Yashiros. Wait for the opponent to be stuck with one active card, then either kill it or knock it back into his hand, leaving him WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDE open.

I read a few days ago on Magic Box that Sega is porting Culdecept 2 to PS2... maybe if we start petitioning now we can convince them to localize it. :)

And whatever you do, stay away from the Monster Rancher card game on GBC!

It's about 10x better than the original. The faq on it at gamefaqs explains the improvements far better than I can, but I can't even play the first one anymore because it feels far too limited.

So few copies were made though its probably almost impossible to find now though. And yes, its in Japanese, but a seasoned player will only need to glance at the faq occasionally in the beginning before getting up to speed.

You could be right.

But the fact that it was in a language I couldn't understand put me off of the game.

So many people say "with a faq, this game is easily playable blah blah", and maybe you will have the basic game concepts down but:

Card Fighters Clash was so much more than a card game. It had atmosphere, a wacky story, bizzaro dialouge, and just a plain crazy ass style to it. And not being able to read all the text would really just lose that for me.

That little rant applies to all import games I suppose: just because you can play thru it with a faq, doesn't mean you should (IMHO :)).

this thread needs revivin'. was gonna bring up a new one to talk about the new yu-gi-oh game on gba, but thought i'd just get this one rollin' again. this past weekend i got some more cards for yu-gi-oh and am just dyin' to dual a friend of mine. i've also been playin' more of card fighters clash this past week.

so who's got some good info on the yu-gi-oh gba game? give me some impressions and comparison to card fighters clash.

Only thing I can add is a little while back I picked up Monster Rancher Card Battle ep2 and it was pretty sweet.

I really never got into yu-gi-oh as the character designs are freaking horrible!

Card Fighters Clash is the only reason I have not sold off my NGPC. I don't even own the game, but one day I will, and that's why I am keeping the system :)

that actually looks interesting kabuki.....why didn't it come out in the states? i'd definetely play it if it were in engrish...or sumthin'.

Because Sega can be really really stupid (or profit oriented) sometimes. Just like leaving Samba 2000, Cosmic Smash, the Sakura Taisen series, and tons of other Dreamcast games in Japan, the lack of Culdcept II in the US is a crime against humanity.

Culdcept II Expansion just came out for the PS2 in Japan... maybe we'll see a US release of that one? I'd be the first one on the pre-order list.

It's only a bare-bones translation from what I remember...

I have 60+ hours in CFC2 with only a little help from the faq. If your memory isn't swiss cheese and especially if you've already played the original a bit, you'll be fine.

Oh, and I really tried to love Culdecept 2, but the fact that I can't trade all the damn useless cards I have to actually compete against the next level pisses me off too much. To win a 2 hour battle that was touch and go right to the end only to be rewared with 6 wolves and 6 weak armor cards is a little more than discouraging.

And the computer definitely cheats. Wow, it missed landing on my spaces for the sixth time in the row, even though most of the spaces are mine. -_-

Actually, he makes a good point. Its sucks getting crappy cards after a battle :)

Well... the cards you acquire are completely random. It's just that if you win, you get more cards. So more chances you'll get good ones. But the greatness is the fact that even if you lose, you win cards!

And ammadeau, the best part is getting Holy Words and forcing them to land on your level 5 lands :D

Argh.. I *still* need to get Culdcept II. Kabuki's gushing sold me on it a while ago, but I have not picked it up yet...

I'd love to see see the expansion come out in NA. Is there any realistic hope of that happening?!

theres a rom of it..but the people who worked on it, hasnt worked on it for the past year. so whatever it was the last time they worked on it, its still the same way. if i remember correctly they are a little less than 50% done with the translation

i had CFC2, but never touched it. and sold it..now i regret it. i even bought a flash linker..and sold it. never even got to use it

Just bought the game from a local import/game shop. Pretty cool, although I'm still coming to grips with the rule on when to attack and such (never played a game like this). Does having the SNK version mean I can't get capcom cards?

you can get capcom cards..but you cant get certain capcom cards

for example..if you had the capcom version, you would be able to get kugar, or terry unless you had the snk version and linked up and traded cards.

also, if you did link up both of them and traded cards, you would get 298/300. the other 2 cards would have to be won via versus mode. and those 2 cards are chosen randomly..which i have YET to accomplish. i have 298 on both versions.

if i find CFC2, imma pick it up on the spot..thats if the price is right

Mm..Card Fighters. I picked this up again recently with all the talk of card games between my friends. I really wish they made a REAL card game of this, since as we all know, the NGPC didn't catch on well :( Plus collecting cards is fun =X

I like to play a patience game. I have TONS of cannon fodder for no other purpose than to increase my AP. I throw them out, attack or block, have them die, do it again. Cammy and Hsinko are great for this. Nice AP addition, crappy hit points! As soon as I'm satisfied with my AP total, I'll throw out Zangief, and boost him over the cource of the next few rounds with R. Mika and whatever else I have, but Mika is usually enough; Blodia, who sucks 10 up upon entering the fray; and a Ken, which I power up with Sean. Sometimes I pull my single Terry Bogaurd, who has 1000 HP all by himself!!! And there are others in my deck, but it seems I always pull Zangief, Charlie, and Ken. So, with these three heavy hitters out and about, I use my high AP to do a tripple team attack, and, for the most part...no one survives. I haven't lost a single match using this method. :D

Or dropping a monster with 60+ defense on a land, building it up to the top level, then switching it out with the dreaded KELPI and watch as every passerby is forced to land on your square. Mwahahahahaa ahahaha ahahaahahah HAHAHHAHHAAAAA!!!!!!!!!

yay! i got the yu-gi-oh eternal duelist soul game for my gba today! i'm playin' it an' i think it's pretty cool so far. who else has it?

I am tempted to get Yu-gi-oh for GBA.. but I have not read enough about it yet. How about some impressions rama? :)

Ah, CFC - truly one of the greats, up there with SamSho, Slug, MotM and Unitron as the best the NGPC had to offer. This thread has got the battle music stuck in my head now - do do do do do do do dooo do do do do do do do do do do doooo do do do - do do do!

...er, anyway. I don't care much for card battlin', but this game had a hook that would not be denied. And beating Cap with my Ikari deck was the best.

i'm on my 3rd duel against joey now. it's not visually stunning or anything. you don't get see the monsters actually fight. and there are no cool lookin' cut/fire/punch graphics when cards are attacked, but it is fun. i put my deck in before i started playing. i think that's the biggest draw for me to this game is being able to play with the deck that i own in real life. anyway, it's seems really good right now. i'll let you know if i still like more or less by the end of the week i guess. it's still too early to really tell if i love it or not. it doesn't seem as challenging as CFC....not yet anyways.

joey beat my ass twice last night. the game's getting tougher. the battle music isn't as cool an' action packed as it is in CFC, but it's kinda catchy and nice. i think it's really solid so far. i'd probably have more fun with it if i had someone else to link up with.

Just got the game a few days ago. I've got all the coins, but there's no way in hell my deck can beat Kid in the semi-finals...at least not consistently. Goodness, where do you get Zangief, Sagat, and 1000HP Ryu?!

On the flipside though, you can play Culdcept II online with nihonjin with the usual 1200yen/3 months fees. I would have done it but my copy of Culdcept II keeps getting lent out. The two people I lent it to each had it in their possession longer than I have o.o

i want something like this for the GBA..anything out there that is near close to this/addicting? i know some people mentioned some but im too lazy to look..its probably in this thread too..i think

as for the dbz card game..its crap. no story line..too plain and simple. its nothing compared to CFC.

also does yu-gi-oh play like CFC?

controlling and layout wise? yeah, pretty much like CFC. the thing with the yu-gi game is though, you don't actually have a character that walks around and interacts with people. you don't even make a character name for yourself.

you start the game, choose a deck to start off with, and then you have a choice of 5 people to start dueling against: tea, joey, tristan, bakura and lil yu-gi. the game has this neat monthly calander feature. during certain times of the month, tournaments are held and new booster packs are given away (5 cards each pack). you also recieve 5 cards for every duel you win. each duel that you have counts as 1 day of the week. on the weekends there are tournaments, and that's when you're able to get new booster packs....so long as you win. at the end of a month a major tournament is held. i haven't gotten that far yet though...i think i have another week to go (about 7 duels that i have to choose against those 5 initial characters) before i get to the monthly tournament and am able to fight new characters. the fun factor is really kickin' in though.

i just reached stage 2 of the game last night and five new duelist are available for challenging: weevle, rex, mako, mai,....an' someone i've never seen on the show before with short green hair. the game just gets better and better the more you play. more booster packs are also becoming available.

don't know if anyone cares, but the dungeon dice monsters yu-gi-oh game'll be coming out in spring of 2003 for the gba. i read on the gamefaqs yu-gi-oh message boards that it's already out in japan. anyone else have any info?
