My vote: SEGA > Namco
The only genre I personally think Namco beats SEGA in is light gun shooters and racers (though HotD3 and Sega GT2002 may change those). Other than that, SEGA absolutely slaughters Namco, IMO.

Daytona USA is better than any racing game Namco has ever done, so scratch that genre from Namco's side as well. We won't even get into Rally, Hang On, Outrun, Power Drift, Scud Racer, etc.
I love both, and its soo hard to chose one over another !!!
Tekken/Soul Edge/Calibur VS VF - Namco, I love Namco fighters, only like VF4 on Sega side.
Ridge Racer - Daytona/Sega Rally - Namco, Never cared about Sega racers :)
Time Crisis/VC - Namco - Time Crisis series is just more fun :)

Well I think they have one thing in common, both USA offices suck because they continue to screw over us with non releases and stupid name changes for games :p

Sega is the new Treasure.
Now, in about 1 years time, there will be a 'hardcorist' backlash against Sega, much like what happened to Treasure.
HA! Namco is hardly hamburger. Pac-Man? Dig-Dug? C'mon! Mr. Driller? Ridge Racer? SOUL CALIBUR!?
End of the day, though, Namco is an above average developer, but it's not in the high echeleons with Nintendo, Sega, and Capcom. Sorry!
SEGA would win, hands down.
Also, VF is good and Tekken is ass.
SF owns them both.
Sega has Chu Chu Rocket and Samba de Amigo. That's all they need to win this one, really. :)

They're both good companies but I really can't think of a lot of Namco games I've enjoyed in the last few years. Tales of (Insert name here), Klonoa, Time Crisis, and Soul Edge/Calibur are pretty much the only Namco series I like too much anymore, which is actually a pretty decent amount of games but compared to Sega, it's not all that much. So...
Sega.
BTW, I've never played Ridge Racer, though. I'm not a big racing fan but it seems to be one that I would enjoy. Maybe I'll buy R4 sometime...

Anyway, I gotta go with Sega overall. I'd say in the early 80s ('80-'84) Namco had the edge, but round about 85, Sega just took over the arcades completely, and it was many years before anyone could come close. Games like Space Harrier, Fantasy Zone, Thunderblade, and Galaxy Force wer just years ahead of the competition. Sega has a real legacy. In more recent years, their Dreamcast linup was one of the strongest and most enjoyable first party offerings I have ever seen.
Namco is no slouch though. I'm not too keen on Tekken, really, but the "Tales of" series is one of my favorites, are is Pac Man and Galaga. They've made alot of awesome games, but in the arcades, Ridge Racer always played second banana to Daytona, and Tekken always behind Virtua Fighter. It might be a close second at times, but second nonetheless.
Aside from Namco copying everything Sega does in the arcades, what has Namco really done?
Everything that's popular from them (Tekken, Ridge Racer, etc) I hate, with the only decent thing being their Tales series.

Namco is a good to great developer and all, but they can't compete with Sega. Soul Calibur is the only Namco title that wins head-to-head against Sega's competition.
I gotta go with Namco, because I think they were better than SEGA for many years, and only recently has SEGA pulled ahead of Namco. I personally like SEGA more, but this poll wasn't called "who do you like more". Plus, Namco developed the game I've spent more time with than any other; RBI Baseball.

I'm not knocking Treasure, just pointing out that Sega has more well-established franchises than Treasure has games, so placing Sega alongside Treasure as a "hardcore" "flavor of the week" developer is understating what they are doing now and have done. Soul Calibur rocks BTW, I'm still waiting for some time with VF4. And I really like the Time Crisis series, best light gun games ever.
The only reason I like Sega as much as I do now started with Sonic, but Sonic Adventure 2 has me very jaded about the future of the Sonic series.

Since we're talking about the companies and their total contributions to gaming, this is not even a contest. Sega absolutely destroys Namco if you look at all of gaming history.
Some of this is a repeat of what others have said.
The '70's didn't have much in terms of great Japanese-developed games outside of Taito's Space Invaders so there's not much to mention. A boxing game by Sega was the first Japanese-developed game. And Namco made some good stuff like Gee Bee.
Namco wins the early '80's. Pac-Man is better than any Sega game back then. Plus there's Galaga, Galaxian, Dig Dug, Pole Position, Xevious, Mappy, etc.
Not that Sega isn't great - Zaxxon, Star Jacker, Monaco GP, Congo Bongo, Up N Down, Star Trek. I'll forgive Sega for making the first FMV game, Astron Belt.
But from the mid-'80's onwards Sega is a leading force in the arcades and in home games. Namco did have many innovations(Winning Run used polygons long before Virtua Racing). Mid-late '80's Namco games can't touch stuff like Space Harrier, Shinobi, Out Run, After Burner, Galaxy Force etc.
Heading into the '90's, Namco starts competing with Sega in the arcades more directly with its racing and gun games. Sometimes their games are as good as Sega's, sometimes they aren't. But aside from these 3d games, Sega is cranking the 2d stuff on the home market at a rate Namco can't touch. Sure, Namco has System 1 and 2 arcade ports like Splatterhouse, Phelios, Marvel Land, Rolling Thunder, Valkyrie no Densetsu etc. but compared to the Sonics, Shinobis, Streets of Rages and a TON of other Genesis games, Namco's line-up is small and lacks masterpieces.
The eras beyond the 16-bit era are no different. Namco makes great arcade games that compare nicely to Sega's but Sega has a ton of home franchises that Namco doesn't aside from a few rare gems like Klonoa.
The bottom line is: Namco is great and they have individual games that can be compared to Sega's, but overall Namco cannot touch the hold Sega has on gaming as a whole, especially console gaming past the early '80's.

Sega. I love Ridge Racer and Soul Calibur, but Sega has too many great games (not to mention the hardware). Its hard to pick one over the other though. I think everyone here loves them both (I know I do).

Current day Sega has had it's moments(Rez,PSO and it's ilk) but Namco has surpassed them, overall.
Namco... by a hairsbreadth.
This is based on their recent fare. Yu Suzuki keeps it close with Virtua Fighter 4 and Ferrari F355. VF4 does edge out Tekken 4. Ferrari F355 is good. Namco has 500GP, which is my favorite arcade racer between the two companies.
Takashi Sano is hard to top with the Crisis games. While Namco's gun games run on hardware less powerful than Sega's Model 3, the gameplay of a Crisis game is superior. Dodging (or blocking in Crisis Zone) adds a bit of realism. While it is definitely possible to clear a Crisis game on one credit (there is no cheese factor... if you get hit here, you clearly goofed), the challenge is to go for a better score next time. With practice, you can negate storms of projectiles such as missiles and Naginatas.
Sega's LA Machine Guns has superior graphics and good play but it gets a tad cheap occasionally (there are too many innocent bystanders, and occasionally you have too many missiles coming at you).
My personal preference for the Crisis series and 500 GP gives Namco the one-point lead.

I'm sorry, but Ridge Racer has nothing on Daytona or Sega Rally 95. The powerslides are weak, and Namco tries to one up Sega on most of their games.
I'll admit that Soul Calibur is the best 3-D fighter on the market, but Tekken is Virtua Fighters bitch. The Virtua Fighter series is a much deeper game. Tekken is more of a button masher, with pretty graphics.
Time Crisis is such a big rip-off of Virtua Cop. While some find it to be a better game, I don't. House of the Dead is a great light gun game and so is Jurassic Park.
I'll give credit to Namco for some great 80's arcade games, but Sega has had a ton more hits, in the arcades, than Namco.
While there are some that will praise Klonoa, it has yet to reach the statis of games like Super Mario, or Sonic.
Sega just has a lot more original content, than Namco. Burning Rangers, Shining Force, Rez, Sega Rally, Jet Grind Radio, Samba De Amigo, Space Channel 5, Chu Chu Rocket, PSO, Zaxxon, Space Harrier, AFO, Crazy Taxi, and so many other titles, put Sega far ahead of Namco.
Er.. why is Time Crisis a rip-off of Virtua Cop? Because they're both light gun games? You might as well say Virtua Cop was a rip-off of Lethal Enforcers... TC was much more innovative than VC because of the pedal. 'nuff said. House of the Dead 2 is good though, not innovative, but it does the important stuff right. If you have'nt noticed, every time Sega releases something great in the arcades, Namco would make a game too similar to that of Sega's. Lethal Enforcers and the like, had you shooting the bad guy, and they dissappeared. With a game like Virtua Cop, you saw the enemies react to the kind of shot you placed on them. Games like Lethal enforcers, were more akin to FMV style gun games.

As for Time Crisis, I enjoyed it much more than VC. Especially because there was no ugly green targeting system. And I don't remember if VC had this but the fact that you raced against a clock in TC and that you got bonus time for beating enemies... that was pretty innovative.

Status and popularity are mostly earned through word of mouth. Games like Resident Evil, Wipeout, and Waverace earned their reputation of a great game not by advertising, or critical praise(Magazines), but by their own greatness. A great game crosses over to all genders, nationalities, and genera's of gaming. Games like Pac-Man and Galaga were something that everyone could enjoy. Even my wife likes Galaga. Some games just have that something extra, that all people can enjoy.

Wow, 2 games, compared to over a dozen hits from Sega. I could argue that even Williams or Atari had more hits than Namco, but why. Namco had it's place held in gaming history with those 2 or 3 greats of the past, but the late 80's had a lot more competition and variety of games to compare to. Sega still rose above the competition.
Yeah, but Virtua Fighter sold phenominally in Japan. Virtua Fighter 2 sold over 2 million copies on the Saturn. That's 2 out of every 5 Saturn owners in Japan. Virtua Fighter is also in the Smithsonian Museam, for it's advancements in computer generated graphic's and being the first truely kenetic man generated by a computer.

Hrm... I dunno, but I am beginning to think I don't like "versus" threads. My vote goes to Sega but not because I dislike Namco. I happen to like Namco as well. They have made quite a few quality games.
But for me, Sega is quite simply my favourite developer. I'd go so far as to say that if I made a list of every game I've ever loved SEGA probably made over half of them! :)

Space Harrier, Hang-On & Super Hang-On, After Burner, Enduro Racer, and Quartet aren't better than Pac-Man or Galaga? I don't buy that. Pac-Mania and Galaga '88 could hang with these games however.
What racing game did Namco have in the late 80's? Final Lap, which had one track. Four Trax and Winning Run may not have been bad, but there's no Namco 80's racer that can come close to Power Drift.

and you're brining up what was popular again to compare them. i mean crap, everyone here thinks VF is a better game then Tekken, but Tekken is much more popular here in the states, so does that make it a better game?
Wow, I'm not gonna read this whole thread, but it seems that Sega is SLAUGHTERING Namco.
That's a damn shame. I vote Namco.
Namco is no slouch by any means.
But when push comes to shove, Sega has WAAAAAAAY to many great games that overcome whatever Namco can push out.
Even if we were to give Namco the edge with a direct comparison of games (i.e. Tekken vs VF, Ridge Racer vs Daytona, or even Klonoa vs Sonic) there are just too many other games that Sega has created for me to even consider Namco in the same league, overall.
Namco vs Konami or Capcom is a much more fair fight, in my opinion.

I like what I like. The fact that there is a SEGA bias here doesn't change anything. If I said I didn't like SEGA to even the odds, I wouldn't be helping anything. I'd just be going along with the crowd.
I think Namco rips off the Sega shit and then repackages it by making more marketable.
Basically, RidgeRacer is like a Daytona 2.0, Tekken a Virtua Figter 1.2 and Timecrisis a Virtuacop 1.5.
I may be wrong on what came out first but Namco has always owned the Arcades and Consoles.

I like the versus threads where there are fair contenders like Nintendo vs Sega, Capcom vs Konami. But one's like this, where one developer is(should be) the obvious choice, I don't think there's a big need for.
This does remind me of Capcom vs. SNK around 1994 if you stick Capcom in Sega's place and SNK in Namco's.
When Capcom brings out the Super SFII series, SNK really gets serious (Garou reference intended :D ) and voila... Here's King of Fighters '94. While some people may call it a SF rip, it did quite a handful of things better (what other game at the time had 3 on 3 battles?). I found it better than the SFII series.
Three years before, SNK did blow away the first Street Fighter ('87) with Fatal Fury ('91). Special moves in FF are easy to perform, unlike the ones in SF1.
