I can't decide. They're all pretty good. Guwange, ESPrade and Progear all slow down like MAD though. If it wasn't for that I'd pick ESPrade in a flash. Like someone above mentioned, it's the straightforward simplicity and quality of design. I really appreciate the rhythm and timing regarding the appearance of enemies too.

I guess I'm the only one who actually likes the slowdown in these games. It's not like it changes the pace suddenly and screws you up (ala Sky Gunner), and only really happens with massive bullet patterns (when the slower speed is nicer for dodging anyway).
I take issue with slowdown in shooters only when the gameplay suffers as a result.
Since I have never lost a life due to slowdown in ESPrade or Guwange, I could care less about it, frankly.
If only I could say the same about the Thunderforce series...
Actually, according to something or other I read somewhere, if you turn on the framerate in MAME with a PC strong enough to run it, slowdown happens at a full framerate. In other words, the slowdown is programmed in. Haven't checked it myself, though, so anyone want to back it up or disprove the theory?

Yes, it's programmed in. This is how Cave games remain, you know, actually playable. What I was saying is that MAME handles the slowdown improperly.
I can't attest to cavemame, however.
The new build of HachiMAME (0.62) doesn't seem to choke, but rather it handles the slowdown more properly than the official MAME.

Could be. Motivation to muck about with emulators is minimal when you have the board kicking about, though.
