Impressions: Super Mario Sunshine
After putting in roughly five hours of gameplay time, I am ready to report back on Super Mario Sunshine.
The major difference between Sunshine and Mario 64 is of course the water pump. When Mario first acquires it, he can use it to either shoot a stream of water like a fire hose or to hover over the ground. As the game progresses, Mario can find power up boxes that contain new abilities for the pump, the first being a rocket that shoots Mario straight up.
Aside from the obvious elements that are derivative of the pump, Sunshine is essentially a pumped up Mario 64. The levels are bigger. The colors are brighter and more plentiful. The action is more intense early on. Many of the same moves for Mario even carried over. Of course, we cannot forget that stars have become shines, thus the wonderfully Engrish phrase "Shine Get!".
Another difference in the two games is the dialogue. Cut scenes are fully voice acted in English with Japanese subtitles. This helps the story progress quite well, even for us gaijins. That story is one of Mario being framed by defacing the island where the game takes place. Mario must clear his name by cleaning up graffiti and by catching the liquid imposter.
I'll be back tomorrow with more impressions. Same fat plumber time. Same fat plumber channel.
