Actually, it is. It's unlikely that a nuke could shatter an asteroid unless, like in Armageddon, it is detonated from the inside, and even if we could break it, the fragments might be more dangerous than the whole asteroid.Quote:

Anyway, this asteriod isn't a planet killer - it's more like a single nuke. It could flatten New York, or it could fall harmlessly in Siberia, like a similar one did in the 80s.
There is a planet killer on the way, with a comparitively very high chance of impact, but not for 800-900 years or so.
I dunno...it's around 1.5 MILES wide. If it hit's just like that, it'll do some serious damage. Lands in a city? That's gone who knows how big the damage ring would be. And if it lands in the ocean? It'll make tsunami look like a wave in a kiddie pool. It'll wash out entire coasts! Ever see when the Mississippi overflows? The results prolly look like that, except instead of taking a few days, it'll take a few seconds.
it doesnt need to be a planet killer to wipe out humanity...1.5 mile rock impacting the Earth's surface at a million miles per hour (probably way more) equals no more mammals.
i like dog$' observation, it would be kinda cool to be the last earth age of humanity (cause we all know the corporate big dogs, aristocrats, and the Bushs' are moving to the moon.)
Unless I'm confusing my asteroids, I don't think this one is as big a threat as that article makes it out to be. Everything else I've read on it indicates that the asteroid isn't big enough to wipe out humanity. Just maybe a decent chunk of civilization.Quote:

if that rock hits the earth its not gonna be instantaneous death for humanity, but, it will kick up enough dust to disrupt the seasons and fuck off the food suupply. perhaps we will be forced to go underground.
