The game picks a stage for you depending on your armor status when you clear a level. No armor gets the worst path selection, super armor the best.
I covered that in my TNL review. It's not currently linked on the index, but you can read it there.

Super Ghouls' N Ghosts Question:
Anyway, I was wondering how do you access the new levels in arranged mode for this game.
The manual says once you clear a stage, you can choose which one you want to go to next. I've cleared a couple of stages, and it gives me no such choice. It automatically goes to the next one, just like in original mode. Maybe I'm pressing the wrong button, I'm not sure.
For example, after I kill the bird thing that spits the eggs, it automatically starts me in the water level.
So does anyone know? I'm just anxious to try the new levels.
"Along side the regular original mode is the Remix mode, seeing some of the Cho levels remixed slightly with slightly differing bosses, some Dai levels chucked in , and a Darius style differing path system (which seems soley dependant on which armour you complete the level with). To be honest , i haven`t played this version too much."
So maybe that's it.
I added a link in my response above. Cigs, would you link the review you're quoting? I enjoy reading about Ghouls N' Ghosts.
It's a few posts up in this thread as well.

I agree with your review for the most part, especially the sound part (7/10). Today I did a side by side comparison of the SNES SG&G game, and the GBA game through the GB player. The sound on the GBA game is lacking a bit compared to the original Snes game. For some reason, Arthur is larger on the GBA game, than he is in the SNES game.
I'm curious, were you formerly known as NickEvil on gamefaqs...?
NickEvil was a huge GnG fan, and wrote a fantastic review on GnG (Genesis).
Oh yeah, nice to know Capcom has found a new way to torture GnG players with the whole no armor, worst path selection thing. I still love every minute of it.
Thanks, Cigs.
As for NickEvil, there was an EvilNick at GameGO, I think, but I don't know if that's the same guy. Neither of them was me.
