Everyone around here (Western NY) calls it Pop, but I make it a point to say Soda. Sometimes I'll say Pop accidentally but usually it's Soda. When we were in NYC on a vacation as kids, my brother and I asked for Pop at a restaurant we were at and the waiter looked at us as if we were morons - ever since it's been Soda :D
I remember when we were at E3 2001 at the GameGO! get-together and I said Pop, ECM was like "Only people from Buffalo call it Pop!" :jest:

Soda... is what i call it in general... like if i say to the waiter "what sodas do you have?"... and from there i use only brand-names...
... anyone who refers to soft-drinks in general as "coke" needs to be killed... now :bang:

... and for the record I say "soda". Most people here seem to say "soft drink" or "soda", when they're speaking English anyway...
I was up in the New Jersey, Conn. area and was at a fast food restaraunt. They had a soft drink/soda/pop machine on the floor area, so you could pick your own flavor. I asked the girl at the register, for a soft drink, with my meal. She looked at me and said: "What's a soft drink?" I replied with: "I'll take a coke."
That's odd, I grew up in NJ/NYC and people use "soft drink" in certain circumstances like in grocery stores and what not. There is a "soft drink aisle", for example.... I think you just encounted a n00b or a transplant. :p
who cares what it's called? It's just as manufactured as any language, so... :p
But Reno calling it 'pop' is plain scary. Trust me.
