Just wondering how many of you signed up for the beta, cause I just got my final questionare for being accepted.
i signed up but didnt hear shit. not even a "you were not picked" mail.
Well, heres some info about it. I don't if this has been posted on any game pages at all -
"If you're chosen to be on the Beta Team, you must purchase the Xbox Live Beta Starter Pack for $49.95 to participate. With the Beta Starter Pack, you get one year of Xbox Live's intense gaming service, Communicator headset and module, setup DVD, handy reference guide, Beta game(s), including the prerelease, online-only version of NFL™ Fever 2003, and more. To say thanks for playing and participating in the Beta, we're throwing in some additional high-speed game play, on us. So you'll play for nothing until the scheduled official launch in November 2002.
An online-only version of NFL™ Fever 2003 can be played exclusively during the Beta Testing period. Xbox Live is scheduled to be available in the U.S. in November 2002."
And yes, they make you pay for beta testing it, but I guess its alright since you get live for a year anyway...
that is such ass that you have to pay for the startup kit. so do you keep the kit or will you have to return it after testing and buy the "finished" one?
I doubt you'll have to return it, but what's to really return? I doubt the communicator will change much and beta software almost never has to be returned (to my knowledge), and I doubt they'll care about the guide or setup DVD returning.
As for the price, I'm not surprised. With more (at least, more widely known) public betas, more companies are charging at least for shipping these days, because it can get damn expensive, especially with such huge amounts of stuff getting passed around. The beta package here sounds pretty hefty, so I'm not suprised at the price (though I do think it is perhaps a bit much).
Just finished the survey. Too bad they picked NFL Fever as the beta title. UC would have been nice.
Dyne: It's basically the same thing as signing up for Xbox Live, except you get to do it ahead of everybody else.
I also got my final questionaire today. Assuming they don't just randomly choose people, I'm SO in.
Can't wait.
I signed up before I started working for MS and was picked for the consumer beta.
The second to last question on the last survey got me:
"Are you an employee of Microsoft, Xbox or its competitors?"
I'm on it anyway as an employee, but I would have let a friend play in my stead on the second account.
Count me in too! I just got done filling it out. I think it's very cool. I don't mind paying for the equipment. There wasn't much to the questions so I'm assuming just about everyone that gets that final questionare is in. We'll find out within two weeks. Woohoo!!
Don't count on it...Quote:

Way to put a damper on things Master.
I hate you.
Aww... damn. That means I didn't get accepted.
I got the first survey, but nothing past that.
*smooch*Quote:

I filled out the final questionnaire today as well. Hopefully I will make the final cut ;)Quote:

*Scrounges up pennies to pay Microsoft for testing their product* :P
Ah-HA! Survey!
Not too happy about their "pay us for working for us" bit, and the only game being put up for testage being of the athletic variety, buuuuuuuuuut it'd be nice to, for once, do something that NOONE ELSE CAN DO! ...or something!
Stupid confidentiality agreements. I bet MS'll be keeping close tabs on all of its beta people, too, so no info for the rest o' the people...

Dood. We don't pay them to work for them. They don't count any of the beta time as our one year subscription. If we were gonna play online, we had to buy this stuff anyway, and they're letting us do it early.
I can't wait.
I can't wait as well. Hopefully the rumors will be confirmed that Unreal Championship will join the list of games to beta test the service with. :)Quote:

I hope they give out some cool XBOX swag too :D
They're throwing in "additional" high speed game play? What the heck does that mean? If you buy the starter kit on the official launch day don't you get your first year for free anyway? Now as a beta tester you pay $50 for the starter kit and you don't even get 1 year? Am I right or am I wrong? So essentially, you're paying $50 for the kit, and about 4 (maybe 5) months of online play... what happens when November comes around? Do you pay another $50 for a full year or what?Quote:

What a load of PR crap...
Uh, Searchy, read the whole thread very carefully.
Okay look, this has what got me confused:
It says one year, okay, that's fine... now what does the following mean to you?Quote:

Doesn't this second statement say you play for free UNTIL the official launch?Quote:

you play for free until november, meaning they don't start counting the year you paid for up front until that time. You end up with about 17 months for the price of 12
Cool thanks, now I understand... it would've been nice if they stated it in plain english like you did.Quote:

That reminds me of a joke:Quote:
Cool thanks, now I understand... it would've been nice if they stated it in plain english like you did.
There was a pilot flying a small single engine charter plane, with a couple of very important executives on board. He was coming into Seattle airport through thick fog with less than 10m visibility when his instruments went out. So he began circling around looking for landmark. After an hour or so, he starts running pretty low on fuel and the passengers are getting very nervous.
Finally, a small opening in the fog appears and he sees a tall building with one guy working alone on the fifth floor. The pilot banks the plane around, rolls down the window and shouts to the guy "Hey! Where am I?" To this, the solitary office worker replies "You're in a plane."
The pilot rolls up the window, executes a 275 degree turn and proceeds to execute a perfect blind landing on the runway of the airport 5 miles away. Just as the plane stops, so does the engine as the fuel has run out.
The passengers are amazed and one asks how he did it. "Simple" replies the pilot, "I asked the guy in that building a simple question. The answer he gave me was 100 percent correct but absolutely useless, therefore that must be Microsoft's support office and from there the airport is just a while away."
:)
Here's to hoping they include something other than a sports game as a test for the service (say, Re-volt, or an online Halo?). Less than two weeks until we find out who's in...
Btw, has there been any news on the Linksys wireless ethernet adapter for the Xbox? And does anyone know if XBLive allows you to play from behind a router/firewall?
I love Microsoft, but that was a great joke! :D
they better. my dsl connection is currently split between to winxp pc's and my xbox on GS tunnel (soon to add the ps2) all on a 4 port router.Quote:

Wolffen, I heard that joke before, but I never dealt with MS customer service or anything like that before. Now I believe it's true...
Here's another question:
I seem to remember that XB's internet service would use .NET Passport for user accounts. Does anyone know if this is true? I get the gitchy feeling whenever I think about giving MS my credit card # for this thing. Especially after the kick in the nutsack they gave the I.T. community with that damned "Software Assurance" crap. I'm seriously thinking about migrating my organization to Linux, or at the very least, OpenOffice....
SMX, I\'m an I.T. Director, so I deal with them and their products all the time in one form or another. Calling Microsoft is a last resort around here. :) That joke is a little unfair, as they do have knowledgeable people in support, but it can be like pulling teeth to get them to give you useful information sometimes.
I don't know about Passport on XBOX, they did say that you would have one user name for all of the games... I suppose they mean thier games but I am not sure.
Great joke there Wolffen :)
The new OXM magazine has a poster inside of it with XBOX Live details. It gives a web site you'll be able to go to for just such a problem. I don't have it with me or I would post the site.Quote:

I believe that Xbox Live will have a one user id one password system similar to MSN Passport but I doubt it would be the same. But I'm not completely sure. What does the Passport thing have to do with the Software Assurance fiasco? That's when Microsoft changed their Office subscription plan so that you had to pay up front for about 3 years (or more) of upgrades or else you would have to pay full price if you didn't sign on before the deadline right?
That old gag.
Somebody needs to write a new Microsoft joke.
You're pretty close on Software Assurance. 'Cept SoftAss covers ALL saleable MS products (SQL Server, Exchange, NT, 2000, XP, .NET, V C++, VB, CE, etc). And to get SoftAss, you had to upgrade to "current levels" to qualify. Running Win98? No SoftAss for you, until you pay money to upgrade to Win2000! Etc, Etc, Etc.Quote:

What does that have to do with Passport? Well, I figure if a company is going to try and rip off millions of corporate customers by making them pay a large sum of money now for "potential" upgrades they may not need now or within 2 years (SoftAss only last for 2 years), I shouldn't trust them with my wallet. The ultimate expression of .NET Passport is MS has any info you give them in their servers (address, phone, credit cards, credit reports, etc). While this can be nice in some respects, I can't say MS is at the top of my list of "Most Trusted Companies." For the time being, MS is keeping the info in Passport minimal (14 fields, supposedly). But they'd like to take it much farther (buy a house or car using your .NET id!). I'd prefer to skip that boat now rather than later.
I'm torn though. Requiring a credit card for XBLive means less lamers (in theory), and a better gaming experience (again, in theory).
Nigel, I didn't notice that in this month's magazine. I thought the poster was just for Unreal Tournanment. I scanned their "article" about the XBLive service for more details on wireless solutions, but didn't see anything. I'll have to check again.
requiring a credit card for psov2 didnt deter the lamers....
Well, I didn't say it reminded me of a fresh Microsoft joke. :)Quote:

Besides, most of the good ones are about Larry Ellison now. :)
Good point DD. Thanks for spoiling my one happy thought about XBLive. :(Quote:

Very true, but MS is paying for it because I heard that the majority of businesses have held off on subscribing to this plan. I read this off of ZDnet and I believe the figure was around 30% (maybe less) of companies actually signed onto this plan and MS may rethink this rash plan. So your company isn't the only one that's careful about renewing their license.Quote:

As for Passport security issues, who knows... after all, Windows has been notorious for security leaks, but then again, we'd be seeing the blue screen of death on the Xbox if it were anything like Windows... *recalls E3 2001* :D
OK. The poster in OXBM mentions a currently non-existant FAQ on http://www.xbox.com/live. So much for that. I did some digging on Linksys's website, and found this: http://www.linksys.com/press/press.asp?prid=61
Instant Wireless Ethernet Workgroup Bridge (WET11) – The Instant Wireless Ethernet Workgroup Bridge enables any network device with an Ethernet port to go wireless, including PCs, printers, Internet appliances, gaming consoles such as the Xbox™, and even entertainment hardware such as Replay TV™ devices. That hurts the wallet a bit...Guess I might look into running some CAT5 through my house after all. =/
I'm still interested to see how XBLive works through a firewall. I assume the 'box just makes a TCP/IP connection to the XBL servers. If that's the case, as long as nothing funky is being used, most consumer level hardware firewalls should work fine with the service.
A feature I won't have to use. :) When someone plays against me, they'll never know if they're playing against Scooby Doo, Sean Connery, Batman (Kevin Conroy version), Optimus Prime, Piccolo (current US VA), Scorpius, or a half dozen other characters. :) Although Scooby as Dark Lord would be intersting. :)Quote:

Damn you people. I didn't get an email :(
Master, when are we gonna find out? I sure as hell can't wait until November 15th...
The first batch of emails is set to go out sometime between now and the 21st, I believe. I'm betting on the 21st myself.
Grr... I'm getting restless...
Just a little while longer...Should be today or tomorrow.
Anyone hear anything today?
you guys are funny :)
Looking at the forums @ xbox.com, the emails have gone out already. There might be another wave of them, but that looks like a load of bull at this point. Basically, if you didn't get an email yet, there's a distinct chance you didn't get picked. PS2 online, anyone? :)
Wow! I went over to the forums and it sounds like they botched this one REALLY bad! If what they're saying is true, MS selected people that didn't get the second email and didn't select some people that did?!?! Sounds pretty random. Why send out that second questionare to a select few if they aren't the people you will pick the final group from? Sounds like this one got the MS treatment to the hilt! hahahha That's what I get for assuming. hahahahahaa
This makes me extremely unhappy.
Oh well, I guess I didn't really wanna play Fever that bad anyway.
But I'll be damned if someone is gonna steal my "Dark Master" gamertag!!!
I got an email about it today. (21st)
Heres what it said.
Thanks for waiting to participate in the beta. The response exceeded 100,000.
We wanted to let you know we plan to send you an email no later than September 20th regarding your status to potentially be included in our beta test program.
You're at the top of our pre-registration list for our ongoing beta program. So you'll be the first to create a Gamertag and the first to know when it's time to get in this incredibly intense, high-speed gaming experience. That means you can start creating a rep before most.
In the meantime, check out http://www.xbox.com/live/ for the latest news and updates on Xbox™ Live. Or, copy and paste the link into your browser.
Thanks again for your desire to participate in the beta and you will hear from us soon.

If they got people to pay for the Windows 98 beta known as Windows 95, why is it a surprise that people would line up for Xbox Live betas?
i got a big fat inbox of nothing...:(
I got my first email today. Got the same message that Mog did.
I'm on the board and catching up quick:Quote:

yeah i got that email today also.....fuckin figures. a couple days after i had to sell my xbox to pay off the damage some hit and run fucker did to my car last week.......
Count me in! I got the e-mail as well
Korly, obviously you have something better to do with your time on November 15th... like celebrate my 21st birthday with me and go hit some bars suckah!Quote:

wtf...... I got no surveys, but today finally got a email just saying that by sept. 20th... blah blah bla, but here's the odd part. Despite no surveys, it said 'You're at the top of our pre-registration list for our ongoing beta program.' Is that some generic crap everyone got meant to mess with my head? Those evil bastards!
I got the mail that Mog did as well, and this is the first mail I've got about it.
Well, the group MS farmed this out to has had fun. Let's see, people who never took the surveys, in. People w/o a registered Xbox (as in, might not have one), in. People with multiple id's on xbox.com, in, and multiple times. From impromptu polls on various sites, it looks like a great deal of those who got to the second survey never got a third email. There is supposedly a "thanks for trying, but sorry" email, but I've seen no proof of this myself. My inbox has been empty.
Perhaps the "no email" is similar to a Marvel "No-Prize"? :)
I got no email one way or the other.
I got all the surveys, but nothing else.
I hate this.
Got a new email a little bit ago:
Thanks for wanting to participate in the Xbox™ Live beta. Here's a quick update on our progress...
We selected our initial beta testers this week and will be adding many more over the weeks to come. If you have not yet been contacted, we will be contacting you on or before September 20th regarding your status to potentially be included in our beta test program.
We want to thank you for your willingness to participate in the program, but want to let you know that we have many more applicants than we have openings. However, remember that this is just the beta, and we're working feverishly to bring to you the actual Live service on November 15th, 2002. This is when we will have made the necessary tweaks to create the ultimate online gaming arena for you and your friends.
In the meantime, check out http://www.xbox.com/live/ for the latest news and updates.
Thanks again for your desire to participate in the Xbox Live beta.

Now we've at least had word. :)
I just got that one too.
Those Bastards! Don't they know who the HELL I am?! I'm Bryan F'n Korly goddamnit!!! It is I who should have been their lead tester! These other peons are just going to ruin it for everybody!!!!
Ok, rant over... Now awaiting September...
I got that same shit. Fuck em. I don't care too much about MS's Football series anyway. It would have been pretty cool to be playing something like that before the rest of the world but oh well! hahahhha

Sorry. Weird mood this morning. Well, I got an email from the Beta program last night, and got in. Luckily, I noticed my email shortly after it arrived, and was able to jump into the store and order my kit. Apparently, the store was slammed over the last 48 hours with people trying to get in. So at least one of us got in. :)
My kit is due to arrive by Friday, if all goes well. My gamer tag will be Wolffen (who didn't see that coming?), and I will await getting my ass kicked by y'all, and displaying my lack of need of voice masking (due to the numerous impressions in my repertoire) with baited breath.
Anyone else get in?
I got in, hopefully mine will be here Friday as well... but I have a feeling it won't be here till Monday :(
What shipping did you use Wolffen? I used 2 day shipping on mine, so hopefully it will get here by Friday... the website was dragging last night and I finally got my order in at around 12:40 EST last night.
I used 2nd Day. Only $2.40 or so difference between that and 3rd day, and ground can take weeks. Granted, I think the kits are coming from Atlanta, so I'd get it just as fast, but I've know UPS to keep an item at it's distribution center in Spartanburg, SC (20 mins from Greenville, where I live) for several days just because the item wasn't overnight or 2nd day.
Glad I jumped in @ 5:30ish from work! Apparently a lot of people were invited in this time. :) I assume your call sign will be Werewolf? :)
I just got accepted AGAIN. Weird. I'm going to sign up for another account so I can have one for letting friends play...
Atlanta isn't too far from me, it might make it Friday if they sent it out today.Quote:

i was so geeked about this 3 weeks ago, but now that i got my email, im not even really exicited...
Man I wish I had been picked... my financial situation has gotten very bad recently and now I don't know if I'll be able to afford XBL... if I'd been picked, I could've gotten it befor this happened... Oh well...
Still nothing here. That sucks ass about your finacial situation Thugg. Hope it works out for you.
WTF?!
I am BRYAN KORLY!!!!!!!!!!!!
I should SO have been picked by now...
Yes, it does suck. Not so much for me, but my momz n sis. :(
Ok, I'm signed up now. Damn, the User Agreement is scary...and the premium content is frightening too. As an "example" you can "purchase" (you aren't really charged, but after launch you could be) extra cars in ReVolt. Don't like that idea too much...
I've seen some lag and some baaaad ping times in the lobby. Voices are super clear though. I haven't heard any masking yet. I let my wife try it ("Funny, I don't hear any girls. Why does that not surprise me?") and she got her ass kicked. :)
The Terms of Use is frightening. Basically, if MS reeeally wanted to, they could nail you for charges left and right. You have to provide a credit card when you sign up, so be careful you don't max out your CC when you play.
Hey Werewolf, you signed up yet? I need a friend to add to my friend list. :)
I didn't get mine yet, hopefully tomorrow I will have it and be up by Friday afternoon :)
this is the email I got today...
It won't be too long now. Soon, you'll be in.
That's because after October 7, we'll be sending out more invites for the Xbox Live Beta. Beta Testers are coming onto the service in waves, and you're next.
Here's what to look forward to:
Be one of the first to create a Gamertag and start building a rep.
12 months of high-speed gaming starting at the end of the Beta, plus free play during the Beta.
The Limited Edition XboxT Live Beta Starter Kit, including the Xbox Communicator headset.
All this for only $49.95! That's about what you'd pay for just one game.
You'll be among the first to experience the world's ultimate high-speed gaming arena before it launches on November 15th. So keep your thumbs warmed up, because you'll need them soon.
Stay tuned - and thanks for your interest in Xbox Live. If you need any additional information, you can visit www.xbox.com/live.

I got this same shit today. The title of the email was "XBOX Live Beta: you're in! Then I read that and didn't know what to think. What's your take on it?Quote:

I dunno.
It seems that we were chosen, but wont ba able to buy it until october 7.
Who knows though.
that's the impression I got also. It's a strange way of doing things though.
Aye.
That it is laddie, that it is.
They're shooting for a huge ramp up a month before go-live to get to 35000 people. By inviting a bunch of testers on at the same time (probably doubling the amount on now), they can simulate what it will be like on Nov 6th/15th (whatever the date is now).
Master, add me on your friend list. I'll do the same for you tonight. Werewolf, post here once you get signed up. I figured you hadn't gotten on since I couldn't add to my friends list last night.
Everyone else, please post to this thread if you can once you get your gamer tags if you get into the beta.
I hope I get picked in the second wave, because I can't convince people it's 'urgently important' I buy the kit unless I'm getting free stuff like games....
Signed up, cool I got Werewolf :D
I'll add you guys to my list ;)
I got an email saying I'm in for october 3rd.
Good stuff.
The Beta Kit is nice, it comes in a cool zippered bag and has NFL Fever 2003 Beta Online Only game, ReVolt, the headset and setup disc plus a clear orange memory card :D
Plus so far you can use any game that has XBOX Live support that has been released, I tried NFL 2K3 and that worked fine... but no one was on it at that time :p
Werewolf, got you on my friends list. Thanks for the invite. Hope to see you online sometime soon. (I'll be on Revolt only until I get the gumption to get killed @ Fever).
I've seen a little lag, but I think someone had a bad connection. I was playing last night and a game had 6 people. Sound shot to shit, constant reverb,, and bursts of static whenever someone talked. Whoever had the bad connection dropped out and things cleared right up. I think some people are trying to use ISA or something fishy to hook up since I've seen a few pings up to 1000MS in the Revolt game list. Granted, that's part of a beta, you try and break things.
Hope to see you on Revolt someday Werewolf.
Cool, Revolt it is ;) Hope to see you online soon, probably tomorrow since I beat now.
Maybe we can play NFL Fever against each other, don't worry since I am not very good at it ether :)
Hey Korly, did you hear anything new yet? I know the last thing we got said the 7th but I haven't seen shit. On one hand I want to tell them to go scratch since it's so close to the actual release but on the other I would like to be in the early goings to get the Gamertag that I want. Let me know if you've heard anything and I'll do the same.
Wolffen, Werewolf, you guys are NEVER on. I keep going on only to find you guys MIA. Either you are appearing offline or you aren't going on. Toss me an email and let me know when you guys want to play something.
Sure thing Master, I might be online later tonight if I don't get out of work to late :)
I was also told the 7th and haven't received anything yet. Even though it's only Revolt, I still want to get the first 'free' month. :)
Master, Werewolf,
Sorry I haven't been around. Work and home life have kept me from being a good beta tester. Granted, y'all are never on when I was on anyway. Master, I saw you online once playing NFL Fever, and that was it. :) I'll try and jump online tonight between 8 and 9pm Eastern, if I can.
Man, I was hoping that some more TNLers would get invited to the beta this week. I haven't paid much attention to the xbox.com boards to see if more emails went out recently or not.
Schlep, it's not just Revolt. It's Revolt, NFL Fever 2003, soon to be Whacked and MotoGP. Plus, any game released in the next month that is Live compatible is playable on the beta. NFL2K3, for example, is playable online right now if you are in the beta.
No new word from me.
Korly,
Sorry to hear that. I haven't found any evidence of new letters going out on the xbox.com forums either. :/
Master, Werewolf, you should be getting your new games today or tomorrow, if you haven't gotten them yet.
haven't received word yet either. they said that would at least let us know if we aren't getting in. :(
Looks like the last letters haven't gone out yet. Possibly today. Since the current beta testers just got their latests demos and such, they might be waiting to see if there are any problems this week before sending out the emails. I dunno. The official beta team has been relatively quiet this week, so maybe there is hope yet...
