New Franchises or Old?
First of all, this thread is not about rehashes or rereleases. If a game is being rereleased on GBA or some other system its not what I'm talking about.
In the near future, brand new games will be released with old franchises in the spotlight. Shinobi, Ninja Gaiden, Rygar, Zelda, Mario, etc...
Now here is the question, assuming either way that the game is all new and not a rehash, would you rather see new franchises and characters or new games with the flavor and characters of existing franchises.

Give me new stuff anyday. Less chance of "been there, done that" and less chance of lazy development relying on character name recognition.
I don't have any problem with game that take a 4 year break in-between installments, but stuff that gets a yearly update rubs me the wrong way. And when it comes right down to it, I still prefer wholy orriginal experiences.

Eh, as much as I would like to see some new faces, I really only want quality games.

I'm afraid of a retro backlash. It's cool to have classic franchises reborn via modern technology, when they're done correctly (REmake).
Gimme new stuff too. The more abstract and experimental, the better. I learned about a new game called Alter Echo recently, and I think it could be major. It's the whole mystery aspect - with remakes and sequels, you're pretty sure what you're going to get, even though that may be cool. Something new can be a completely fresh discovery, which beats the pants off a retread IMO, no matter how good it is.

It's all about quality and variety! :)
I want to see new franchises and old ones come out.
I think Sega is a great example of this. For every sequel they make to a classic series like Shinobi (since SMS), Sonic (since Genny), or Panzer Dragoon (since Saturn) they seem to come up with something brand new like Space Channel 5, Rez, Skies of Arcadia, or Gunvalkyrie.
A perfect blend of old and new, that's what I want. :)

I could care less as long as the game is good. Although if both types of games were always guranteed to be high quality I would take new ideas over old ones.

For me its, who cares as long the game is good :)
It can be a totally new franchise, but as long as it done right and fun to play it all good. And do you think that the Famous name of the series will help its new installment, if it still suck as a game?

All else being equal, new is better. It bothers me how much Sega and especially Nintendo have become so dependent on old series. Let's face it: their respective golden ages were when their franchises were still young. The greatest talents in the industry shouldn't be devoting themselves to reproducing old magic in new packaging. I understand perfectly well the commercial reasons behind this trend, but in an ideal world we'd see fewer sequels.

Hey:
Its one thing to keep building on an established character like Mario or Sonic, but I really enjoy it when an obscure game and/or character is given an update. The new Rygar, while not really obscure, is a good example and enough to make me want to break down and buy another PS2.
The bottom line for me: a brand-new Capcom fighter with original characters and a new Super system is all good, but in the end I would still prefer another versus game or Street Fighter IV.

I'd like RPG sequels to be along the lines of Suikoden, and if they're intent on making a sequel in a new world ,with new characters, and no real connection to the predecessor, they might as well just make a new original title.
As for other genres, it really depends on what the developer is trying to do. if the makers of metal slug, want to make another run and gun shooter with similar play mechanics and perhaps setting to metal slug, then make a sequel. We don't need Metal Slug and Army Commandos:the jungle shooting, or what have you.
these are when I would prefer sequels. otherwise, make something new.
