Burying the aXe

After doing some thinking the last couple of days, I have come to a decision that may shock many of you.

I am getting another Xbox.

There are several factors that brought me to this end. First, there is no better console to play sports games. Thanks to the "50,000+ blocks" of hard drive space, all of my NFL and NHL rosters, seasons, franchises, etc. can all live in harmony without having to buy further $25 memory cards. Since I have to kick around the old puck and pigskin each season, the Xbox is the obvious choice.

The next major factor is the one that is so common on this board, Sega support. I just couldn't bare to watch House of the Dead 3 and Panzer Dragoon Orta pass by without owning them, since I have owned and played their predecessors into the ground on Saturn and Dreamcast.

The third item in the Xbox's favor is Microsoft announcing that Xbox Live would play nicely with a mod chip. I wasn't going to get another "naked" Xbox, but I was worried that a detection scheme may make a modded 'box unnetworkable. I applaud Microsoft for making the right choice in this instance. They need underground hackers' support, and this will certainly help them in that regard.

Finally, Microsoft's first and second party offerings are becoming much more impressive, blowing Sony's out of the water. Titles like Blinx that don't try to be "adult oriented" are a breath of fresh air on a console where Dead or Alive exists to appease the "I want to grow up now" 15 year-old. It is also good to see Microsoft getting involved in Japan with a horse racing sim, a dating sim, and other niche titles like Nezmix.

When you wrap all of that up with a nice, pretty, little bow, you suddenly see that the Xbox, while not selling well worldwide, is still an impressive first effort. In fact, at this point in its life, it is much more impressive than the PlayStation was.

All I have is the system, JSRF, Gunvalk, and Halo.

Sega sold me my Xbox, too. :) However, its western-made games are looking better every day. Tork will be mine, and Psychonaughts looks like it has great style.

Halo sold me on the credibilty of Western games. i like Halo better than GunValk and JSRF put together.

As for me, I'm not quite sure which to get first. I hope to be working soon so I can finally get one. I'm stuck between PS2 and XBox though, currently they both seem to be pretty close as far as games that interest me is concerned right now. I would include GC, but I want to use the system as a make shift DVD player too.

Thanks, ass. The point of the thread is to spur conversation about the merits of the Xbox, not to get attention for me. If my intention was to draw attention to myself, I'd have more fun and success stirring up controversy.

Actually, that is my intent. As I have said many times, my PC is a little behind the times, so the Xbox will be my only option for playing stuff like Morrowind. Add to that the fact that its Japanese support is picking up with Steel Batallion, Panzer, MGS2:S, etc., and it should wind up giving me a nice dose of both sides of the Pacific.

Yoshi, you're a fucking joke. Pretty much no reason you gave wasn't known all along... MGS2 was announced before XB came out. Tekki (SB) was announced long ago. All the jap games you mentioned were jap launch games. Sega has been supporting XB most from day 1. The XBL/Mod thing isn't a big enough deal even, so really, your 'new' reasons to jump back on the bandwagon are BS.

EThugg, I am well aware that these are not new reasons. They are just reasons that I decided to stop ignoring. What really got me thinking was the online decision that is coming soon. I don't really want to have to setup a router, so I can't have the PS2 and Xbox online at the same time. I had to make a choice, and I actually agree that Xbox Live is likely to be the most consistent service.

My thoughts exactly. Being a rabid video game fan, it is my quest to experience as much of the goodness in the industry as I can. Thus, the Xbox has/will have some great games, warranting a purchase. I think it's cool whenever someone abandons their irrational bias against the box. I can relate... it took me a LONG time to warm up to Nintendo even while they were putting out some of the best games of all time. Sony helped in this regard.

Thanks, Ranji. To be honest, I have felt like a homeless gamer ever since the DC began its decline. I had been firmly in Sega's camp since about 1990. Without them, I sided with Nintendo, only out of familiarity. I think having all three and being a 3rd party fan makes a lot more sense now.

After 9 months? The Xbox is a lot more impressive than the PlayStation was at that time. Remember, that was pre-Resident Evil, pre-Final Fantasy VII, etc. The PlayStation was only good for Raiden Project and Ridge Racer there for a while.

Resident Evil would fall into that time frame too I'm pretty sure.

Plus there's Warhawk, Wipeout, and Street Fighter Alpha.

Suikoden might have come out in the first 9 months.

Don't forget Ridge Racer.

The Playstation had an awesome initial few months. And by the time it hit 9 months it had quite an impressive library of games. That's one of the reasons it left the Saturn in its dust.

I think the Saturn's line-up at the end of 1995(VF2, Virtua Cop, Sega Rally, Panzer Dragoon) was more impressive than the Playstation's but the PS had many kick-ass games in 1996.

add rayman to that PS lineup....

Warhawk rocked. And of couse Sony cancels the sequel. :(

There is exactly one reason the PS "left the Saturn in its dust", Final Fantasy VII. The early Saturn games blew away the early PlayStation games. I would love to hear the PlayStation game that matched Panzer Dragoon. Virtua Fighter and Daytona are vastly superior to Tekken and Ridge Racer.

Daytona on the Saurn couldnt hold a candle to the PS Ridge Racer, truth hurts.

I said one of the reasons the PS was more successful than the Saturn was because it had such an impressive launch when compared to the Saturn's. And maybe not in your eyes, but in the general public's eyes the PS launch was more impressive. Saying one game (FF7) was the only reason is not very logical. FF7 was just one of many reasons.

I don't want to come off as a Saturn basher because I loved mine. I bought it during the pre-launch and it was the only 32bit system I had for over a year afterwards. Only problem was that I would find myself getting frustrated that the Playstation would keep getting quality game after quality game when the Saturn was getting some quality Sega titles and basically less than impressive ports of Playstation games.

As for a PS game that matched Panzer? Well, I don't recall there being any 3D shooters where you sat on a dragon when the PS launched, but that doesn't matter. There were many spectacular PS games in other genres, and many were mentioned in posts above mine.

Never once was the Saturn ever in the sales lead over the Playstation in North America. The Saturn was on the road to failure long before FFVII was released. The Playstation slaughtered the Saturn in 1995 sales and it was even worse for the Saturn in the following years.

Rambling contribution - I've never understood why in those early days, prior to some of the PS exclusive blockbusters already listed, Sony STILL beat out Sega. I suspect if the Saturn had intially been more sucessful we would have seen more games ported to both systems, like say, Tomb Raider was. Even taking into account the massive decline in credibility Sega experienced after the Sega CD and especially 32X debacles, and the fact that Sony's machine was marginally more powerful, I still haven't come to terms with how so many people missed out on such great titles as has been mentioned. How the hell did Battle Arena Toshinden or Tekken beat out Virtua Fighter...? Panzer Dragoon sold me personally, but there were some other fine games released stateside like Clockwork Knight, Bug!, and Mystaria as well. Maybe I was just a Sega fanboy, but how did people become Sony fanboys so quickly?

Ultimately, the complex Saturn architecture, which made game development so arduous, may have helped hasten the downfall of the system, but it seems as if Sega\'s entry in the 32-bit wars was cursed from the start.

Because at the time Battle Arena Toshinden and Tekken both looked like a million bucks compared to VF. Was their gameplay better than VF? Maybe not, but when you see an in-store demo or even pictures of the PS games, then the average person is convinced that the PS is naturally better...but again, that may not have been the case.

I, personally, still don't get how Toshinden got so much praise on graphics alone. It was like almost ALL reviewers were so pleased with the graphics that they ignored the fact that it played terrible. Luckily, with the sequels, they finally seemed to catch on.

The truly sickening thing is that Sony made the exact same mistake with the PS2, but they got away with it completely.

Virtua Fighter 2 was more visually impressive than Tekken and Toshinden even though the PS had better 3d graphics in general.

It was the Sony name that sold the Playstation most likely. They were the biggest name in electronics and people were hyped for it before it launched judging by the fact that it had record pre-orders. Sony already had all the major third-parties lined up too.

Yeah, I heard someone claim at the time that Battle Arena Toshinden made Virtua Fighter look like a mess your 6 year old brother made on Mario Paint. :mad:

Didn't know little kids drew in blocky polygons, but hey.

If everyone takes all of NeoZeedeater's last few posts in this thread and puts them all together, they'll basically get the exact reasons why Sony pulled ahead of Sega in the 32bit era. Thank God that NeoZeedeater posts on these boards, because without him the history of the video games industry would be a twisted, fictional mess on these boards.

I honestly don't see how you can look at those two shots and say VF was better able to win over the casual gamer. Toshinden's graphics are vastly better. VF barely even uses textures.

I knew a lot of people then who saw both games and instantly ruled out the Saturn. VF was pretty damning. VF remix was too little, too late.

Once again, mainstream idiots fucked us with their eye candy loving.

I honestly don't think the mainstream can distinguish well between which systems have better graphics. The system with the better graphics in each era is usually the one that sells less. It's usually the system with the best marketing that wins.

Daytona looked horrid, and seemed like a harbinger of things to come - most of the initial Saturn games didn't look too hot. Daytona better than Ridge Racer? Hmm...I'd say that's a draw, but RR definitely looked better. Daytona's a bit more technical, and with three distinct tracks, but the overall fun-factor's not much different in my eyes, and RR had more to do in it.

And as much as it hurts me to say it, Tekken was better than the first Virtua Fighter. Of course, it was released much later, but there was more to it at the time, both visually and gameplay-wise. (Actually, the visuals weren't even close). Tons of characters, combos and those mindblowing cg endings. It's very easy to forget how simplistic the first VF was - it wasn't until after the second installment that VF really put some distance between the two franchises.

And you're leaving out another big game that put some distance between the PS and Saturn - Tomb Raider. The Saturn version really made Sega's machine look inferior.

Tomb Raider started its development life as a PC game before other versions were announced.

Are you sure about that? I remember reading in Gamefan, about the developement of Tomb Raider. The game was initialy planned for the Saturn. Core had tight relations with Sega, as a bulk of their games were released on the Sega CD. The PC version came out after the consoles, and I believe it was released as Tomb Raider Gold.

I remember the first pics that Gamefan showed of Tomb Raider starring Lara "Cruz". Those were PC screens. There were no Saturn screens available yet so they showed those. PC gaming mags had mentioned TR before Gamefan did.

Tomb Raider Gold is just a special edition. The regular one came out on PC too around the same time as the console versions.

Sega's Saturn and Sony's PSX were neck and neck in sales for the first 9 months. Read a link, for the lowdown on what really happened.

I bought my PSX for Warhawk and Destruction Derby. Both were impressive games, that my Saturn just did'nt offer. I feel that games like Gameday and Resident Evil sold US gamers on the PSX. The US market loves NFL football, and this same market bought Genesis consoles to play sports games. Sony new this and took advantage of it, while Sega completely forgot what sold the Genesis in the first place (Madden).

You hit the nail on the head here. I had the Saturn at surprise launch in May 1995, but it wasn't until RE, GameDay and FaceOff were released that I got a PS too.

That was an interesting link, but I do not know how much I can trust a site like that. Especially since its main focus seems to be exclusively about Sega. And then while reading the history of the saturn, I noticed the article had many errors in it. It first mentions how the Saturn takes the lead by overtaking the Playstation in number of sales. Then a few sentences later it says that Sega was actually counting the amount of systems it shipped to stores and not how many they actually sold, so Sony was actually in the lead. Then some paragraphs down they go back and say that the Saturn was actually outselling the PS at the time. So which one is it? I'm confused with that.

And the article also claimed that, and I quote: "Did anybody still consider Sega's Virtua Fighter a threat when you could play Namco's Battle Arena Toshinden". They also mention how VF2 on Saturn was a perfect port..uh, no it wasn't. It was a very good looking game, but not perfect by any means.

It was an interesting site, but I don't know if I can trust everything they claim.
Edit: That first paragraph I wrote was in refrence to the site's "history" of the Japanese Saturn and PS launches, not the North American one. Just in case anyone was confused.

While it is rather Sega coated, it still portrays a somewhat accurate veiw of what happened during that era. They did go on to the behind the scenes reactions of Sega executives and their gameplan. Still a good read, and a somewhat accurate portrayal of what happened.

Do the mod chips make the X-box "backwards compatible"? If so, my friend is selling me his "special edition" X-box (JP) for $150!!
