Games that have defeated YOU!

Patience, Practice, and Preserverence are 3 P's that can bring you victory anywhere in life- especially in defeating videogames. But there are a few titles which, for me, those 3 P's has done diddly-squat in helping me to win. I am by no means a bad player, but perhaps not good enough to win 'em all...


I am STILL, after all these years, completely unable to defeat the grimm reaper boss in the original Castlevania.

Try as I might, I will never get a 100% in "Poochie ain't Stupid" stage in Yoshi's Island.

I have yet to beat Guilty Gear in one credit to get to Baiken- the hidden boss.

Rugal in KoF '94 has defeated me EVERY TIME.

Ninja Gaiden will never be beaten by me.

Legendary mode in Halo is nigh-impossible for me.

The Adventures of Batman and Robin and Contra: HC on Genny lay the smackdown on my sorry ass EVERY TIME!



Anyone else Man or Woman enough to admit to being defeated by their games? :evil:

Well Mundus still hands me my ass on DMD difficulty in DMC, I want the S rank.

Same with R-Type Delta, last boss on hard.

I will never beat Super Ghouls and ghost and get the real ending.

Last night I saw that there was a Gunbird 2 highscore competition here, I tried to compete with the other scores and after one hour it sounded like this: "there is a bunch of damn liars on this board for sure :mad: ;)
Gonna try again to night ofcourse.

Shit.. some games will never be mastered by me, some could but I think I would ruin them if I tried to beat every challenge that came in my way.

Contra HC has defeated me to the point of questioning if I should try again just to watch my guy die repeatedly.

Alot of strategy games out there seem to just flat out cheat to win, and it pisses me off a great deal. I have a 99% chance of hitting, which i game terms means I will miss 99% of the time. The enemy OTOH has a 1% chance of hitting, which of course means that it will miss 1% of the time. Cock mongers. Brigadine and Vanguard Bandits are two the come immediatly to mind in regards to that.

I could come up with more if I thought about it, but I'm sure I would just be emberassing myself with my weak sauce skills.

Star Ocean 2nd Story so far, I had no problems till the very end boss who consistantly wiped the floor with me. I was told I was too low a level for him since I didn't do a couple of things first but I can't believe how much harder he is then the boss right before him :P I will beat it though before Star Ocean 3 comes out ;)

Hmm, lotsa games have owned me. Some I give up, some I just a'keep gettin' whupped on. Here's a few:

Alien Soldier (Mega Drive) - Can't seem to beat Seven Force, even after continuing 20 times!!

Adv. of Batman & Robin (Genesis) - Shyeah, this game is beatable.. right! Maybe if I can get past Harley Quinn (she's the 1st Boss), I'll start believing it

MDK2 (Dreamcast) - Yup, I'm one of those whiny bitches who complain about the difficulty of this game. But for some reason, I keep coming back! I'm stuck on Max's jet-pack level where he must ascend a LONG-ASS chute while the aliens are sharp-shooting your ass. And they almost NEVER miss.

Mars Matrix (Dreamcast) - Whether I go in with guns a'blazin', or trying to play strategically, I never get very far in this game.

Mark of the Wolves (Dreamcast) - Damn, just reaching Kain is an achievement in itself (I rarely do it), but then fighting him is another chore altogether. I think I've only beaten him ONE time.

Stretch Panic (Playstation 2) - Played into it a little. Wasn't enraptured with the gameplay. Stopped playing it. The only game I've ever given up on without really trying, thus, this game owns me.

ThunderForce V (Saturn) - That last Boss.. STOP GRABBING ME!!

4 Wheel Thunder (Dreamcast) - Shyeah, this game's beatable.. I don't know anyone this game DOESN'T own..

Vanishing Point (Dreamcast) - I love and hate this game equally. You're not racing the other cars on the track, you're racing the clock. The other cars are just there to stop YOU from winning, regardless of their own fates. Somehow, this game remains addicting to me, even though I begin having trouble after the first 5 or so races. Also, the Stunt Mode kicks my ass relentlessly.

EDIT: Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram (Dreamcast) - I don't think I'll ever beat Tangram. But damn, I love trying! BEST GAME EVER!

I'm leaving out a shitload of Genesis/MD, Saturn, Neo Geo and Arcade games. Like I said, WAY too many to list.

In his normal form he's faster than Claude with bunny shoes!!! WTF?!

And he can outrun spells...SPELLS!!! You're not supposed to be able to do that!

Might I just add that most SNK bosses are evil.

Vagrant Story: when the bosses were able to kill me in a single magic attack, and the only way to hurt them was to do a 20+ chain (because the damage went up by 2 every hit... or something like that), i simply gave up

but VS is really the only game i can think of that i simply gave up on...

Very few games have been able to stop me. The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are:
Adv. of Batman and Robin MD - there's no way that game is beatable one player
Ghosts N Goblins (Arcade/Capcom Gen 2)REAL ENDING - I'm sorry but after all the work I go through getting through that game and beating it the first time... fuck playing through it again.
And that about covers it. Honestly alot of the hard games I don't find to be that terrible, and I'll never understand why people consider Ninja Gaiden nearly impossible... it has a couple of annoying moments, but it's not too bad.

Come on... As long as you keep in mind (and avoid) the three "shotgun" shots, followed by the "Eye-Cannon" shot, you should be fine...

There's one I forgot... I've only beat Justice once and that was on a fluke. I really hate that cheap bastard.

Any Psikyo shooter out there. I do much better in the arcade than at home, although I imagine if I had an arcade stick I'd improve, but I still get my head handed to me every time.

Some games don't defeat me by skill, but rather by tedium. I loved Xenogears all the way up to the last dungeon, when I gave up. Story pacing on disc 2? Fine by me, I actually quite liked it. But the non-fun robot battling combined with the single most boring dungeon ever was just too much, and I put it up. Should have FAQed it, just to have done with it, but it goes against the grain too much. FFX was dumped for pretty much the same reason, except Blitzball did it. Put in the time to win the Blitzball tournament, played a little more, and just drifted away.

Almost forgot Beyond the Beyond. Played all the way up to the last dungeon and just couldn't bring myself to touch it again. The tedium finally became too much and I retired, defeated. Even finding out there's a hidden intro to the game couldn't bring me to inflict that game on my PSX again. I mean, I'd not only have to touch the case, I'd have to power up the PSX with Beyond the Beyond in it.

Other than that, there's very few games I can't at least get through, if not with the greatest skill. Most games will let you bludgeon them to death with extra lives and continues, or excessive leveling up. Not that I need to do that. :)

No. His god mode upgrade involves an event with his niece...whose name I forget. Anyway, she dies and he "absourbes" her...or something like that...it's been a while.

I know it's a terrible thing to relish in the pain of others, but considering how terrible I am at most games on the high score board, it feels nice to see everyone cry mercy at the hands of the Genesis Batman and Robin.

SkyGunner - I don't know if there's something not clicking between my eyes and brain, and despite all my effusiveness for this game (I even started the official thread!), I am absolutely terrible at it, barely being able to beat it with Femme and Copain.

Tail Concerto - I absolutely hate, hate, and hate the final dungeon like a philter of poison. Worse: every review talks about how easy the game is and that it's beatable in six hours. Considering I'm well above five hours already, it drives me bonkers trying to finish it as quickly as possible. ...Oh, but how can I hate a game so irresistibly cute?

Vanishing Point (DC) - Part of it is the atrocious control. The other is it demands perfection, so success is as much luck as skill. Is it beatable? Yes. Will I ever beat it? No. I was able to finish Stunt Mode...but I can't get all 100s.

Devil May Cry DMD - I just don't have the patience or motivation.

Rogue Leader - I will never get all Golds. I don't care, though. :D

Super Monkey Ball - I will never see Master Mode. Hell, I don't know if I'll see the EX Expert floors.

Impossible Mission - It lives up to its name. Or maybe it's because I had no clue what the hell was going on.

Justice in Guilty gear. I watched a friend get his ass whipped for an hour and laughed and said he sucked. I try and for the next hour he makes an example out of me for future generations.
Adventures of Batman & Robin for genesis. Fuck that game, plain and simple.
I'll think of more later.

Metal Harbor - Sonic Adventure 2. I'll be darned if I can ever get an A. I think I'm doing everything right and barely make a B. What am I missing?

No other game makes me feel as defeated than this brute. Like to die with 6 bombs in stock? DDP will help you out. Enjoy dodging a hailstorm of enemy fire only to get hit by one sole bullet that you could barely even see? DDP is there.

I'm not giving up, though. I shall conquer her...in time...

Of recent, Gunbird 2. Once I get to level 5 or 6 I usually get raped....

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles On the NES. I used to get to the Technodrome but by the time I reach Shredder I'm basicly dead. I loved and hated this games for that reason.

And yes Mars Matrix is fucking crazy.

Musya on Super NES. Can't remember why I found it so hard, but I remember not being terribly pleased by it. Oh, and Castle of Dragon (I think that was the name) on NES. I thought the graphics rocked at the time, so I kept playing the stupid thing with zero success.

To this day I STILL can't beat MDK2 on DC with Max. I hate Zizzy Balooba!!

Gunbird2 still owns my ass. Is it even possible to beat that game on single player?

I beat Halo on Lengendary once....I've never tried again.

I haven't beaten Survival Mode (to get all the hidden colors for each character) in under 10 minutes yet for Guilty Gear X. It just takes to long and is too repetetive to keep trying : (

Soukyugurentai beat me down pretty hard, but I'll give it another try someday. Stupid god-damn ranking system.

My man! You have to master the rest of the game leading up to him. Then, get the boomerang and the triple shot and don't loose it. Then you can whip his ass with ease.

As for games that own me, I have to give that to Battletoads on the NES. I think I would have to see someone do it with my own eyes to belive it. That fucking game was hard to beat with the game genie and unlimited guys. I'm also not sure I ever beat Ghosts and Goblins the arcade version. I remember that being very hard. I will have to dig out Collections on the Saturn and whip that games ass.

Games that have beaten me:
ANY shooter not called Cannon Spike.
Also, I can never seem to get the "Nozomi's Confession" cutscene after over a dozen playthroughs of Shenmue.

Ghosts 'N' Goblins - NES. The only version I own, and level 3 makes me cry like a little girl.

Battletoads - NES. This might be possible if you only lose ONE block of your life meter when you get hit.

All the shmups released in the US for Dreamcast. "Normal" difficulty for who, Superman?

Armed Formation F (arcade/PCE). I made it to the second level... once.

Super Mario Bros. 2 (JPN) - a.k.a. "The Lost Levels". I know it takes practice... but at the rate I play it, 'twould take me years to beat on one credit (without using the infinite lives cheat).

Agreed.

The same goes for Contra: HC, both games are beatable on 1 player mode. It's all about practice and memorization.

I've beaten C:HC without continuing before, only loosing a life to the last boss.

You're not suppossed to use the switch at the top of the rocket. Instead you're supposed to take a leap of faith of the left side of the switch, and a floating enemy will appear, which allow you to combo your way up to another level of the rocket.

I think I'll add another Gunbird 2. The only shooter in my collection that I have 0 hope of ever finishing. I think the wonky control is partly to blame. It isn't nearly as fast as I'd like it, but maybe that's just me.

Sonic Adventure's speed emblems kick my ass. I couldn't even get Emerald Coast's.

Spyro the Dragon had a few brutal sections like Icy Flight and the insane super jump stage. Try as I might, I could never do it.

What wonky control? Tavia, Morrigan and Aine all move at a fairly brisk pace.

A couple people have mentioned Halo on Legendary. Its not really hard at all since you have plenty of checkpoints at each level. Repeation will get you through it.
Right now Gunstar Heros is killing me. I'm playing it on extreme diffuculty, and Seven Force beats me down hard (I beat 5 of his forms today though).

I second target earth, i never beat that game even though i gave it my soul. i got assault suit leynos a while back. i only played for 10 minutes, I liked what I played, but have been afraid to actually start playing again from fear of starting weeks of playing to no avail...

I thought that super monkey ball had my number, but I should be getting the master levels tomorrow or the day after (maybe tonight if I'm lucky!).

Strikers 1945 II- Is it possible to beat the last 2 stages without bombs..........?
Target earth-I cant even get past the first level........
UN squadron- cheap tanks always kill me
elemental master- not that hard , until you lose your powerups.

I can abstain from bombs up to the last boss. This is in the PSX U.S. version mind you. I'm sure I could take the last boss out without bombs with enough practics, but why risk it.

You have to be very precise in dodging that things bullets , theres hardly any breathing space for the final boss's bullet barrages.

Most shooters I complain about the slow characters for a while, then get used to it and shut up. I'm happy with Tavia, and Morrigan's noticeably faster in Gunbird 2, so I'm covered.
Raiden Fighters (2, specifically) is the only game wher I've found ships that are too fast. Some crazy speed ones in there.

Alien Soldier - this game makes me its bitch. I have only got past the 1st level once

Dynamite Heady - It wasnt to difficult up until the level ( which i think is the last ), where you have to go up that tower with that cat guy chasing you, I must have tried for 3 hours and for some reason just couldnt beat it .... i will go back

Guilty Gear X - just on normal difficult, I get about 4 guys in and then I can never beat the 4th guy no matter who it is :(

Street Fighter 3rd Strike : Not so bad up until the last boss, boy is he a bitch

Vagrant Story - this game is just to complicated for me, which is unfortunate, cause it looks so damn cool

Battletoads is beatable... it just takes tons and tons of practice. I beat it after 2 years of work way back in the day with no cheats or warping, when I was a young un with no money and nothing better to do. I don't think I could ever do it again though, in fact I will not even get near that game anymore because I now hate it with a passion for all the pain it put me through. (Fucking snake levels)

Red Faction just recently whupped me. I can't find the interest to keep trying the same last level over and over again. And, how the hell were you supposed to find out that you had to get the organs in the hospital and bring them to the operating room? There's no clue in the game for that, aside from "the administrator has a keycard." I must have spent two days trying to shoot my way into the damn administrator's office. :mad:

Target Earth, Contra HC, Batman & Robin, all whupped me as well. Gradius 4 was a bitch too.

Man alive, that's only the halfway point. The game gets utterly impossible after that level, and the only way I could get to the ending is with save state/load state abuse.

Yeah, I said I used Tavia, but I've gone and switched over to Morrigan. She has the perfect speed.

I've always used Aine and the controls have never been a problem for me.....I guess it's just a matter of opinion.

Heh, I figured it out because Metal Harbor was one of the only levels I actually liked in the game, so I played several times.

This, along with City Escape are among the few levels in which I actually cared enough to get all A's.

My hat goes of to you for this feat. I truly think that is the only way to beat this. I often wondered if it was the only game I owned what I could do. But, those days are long gone and self torture is not my bag. 2 years of hard work sounds about right.

Seriously. Congratulations. That's one hell of a feat. What I'd really like to see is a video of someone doing that. Surely one must exist out there somewhere...

I'd love to find a site that has one credit or one-life replays of classic games. Anyone know of such a place?

Ominusha, one of the very few. I sold it because I got so frustrated with it. They actually opened up a new "easy" mode because I died so many times, and still failed to do it. I'm talking about that shitty puzzle where the main character gets trapped in the room being filled with water and you have to move some puzzle pieces to open the room. I tried, about 40 times, with walkthroughs to no prevail. I just got so fed up with it eventually, that I sold it.

Also, the Command Center on Secret Agent in Goldeneye. Never was able to do that without Gameshark (back in the day I cheating, for the extra lvls to impress my friends.. =P)

Better yet, bring triple shot and holy water with you. All enemies freeze in place when they are hit with holy water. If you catch him just as he appears on the screen with a shot of holy water and don't let up you'll never be touched.

This is very true also! The only problem is if you don't freeze him right when he appears you might be in big trouble. It definately works though.

yea and be sure to take the 2 extra lives, you don't have to finish the stage really fast just get a lot of points and that's it. I find Final Rush/Chase more difficult/impossible.

Oni - this game make me break a keyboard once, I been stuck in the Boss fight when you fight with your clone and i own the game since day one :(

I've beaten Battletoads, and I've contemplated doing it again just to see if its possible. I've been thinking about recording a gameplay movie with rocknes just to have something to prove it.

If you're talking about Impossible Mission on the Atari 7800, there is a very good reason why you can't beat it. It is, in fact, impossible to beat.

A piece you need to complete the game is hidden under a computer terminal, but there is a bug that prevents you from searching the terminal.

I haven't played the 7800 version of Impossible Mission but when I first found out about the bug in that version I couldn't stop laughing. :)

I used to beat Battletoads at least once a year, to prove to myself that I still "had it". If you think that game is hard (HA!), try to play through another one of Rare's entries: Snake, Rattle, and Roll. Now THAT is hard.

Most recently, I have beaten Maximo with 100% Mastery, all 4 kisses, and w/o losing a single life. If I ever did, I would quit out and start from my last save. Compared to Battletoads, this game is cake.
