Sony KV-1311CR RGB Monitor (Amiga)

(I posted this message at TFP a couple hours ago; thought I'd post it over here in case someone knew something about it)

On a recent trip home, I made a head-slapping revelation: the monitor my family used with our Commodore Amiga still sits in my father's study, connected to a TV antenna and his DVD player. I always remembered that the front of the monitor had a button labeled "RGB", so I knew it had some kind of RGB capability.

Sure enough, I was right. The monitor switches from composite A/V and RGB at the touch of a button. But I'm a bit mystified by the connectors on the side of the monitor, as they resemble nothing I've read about on this board nor elsewhere. The monitor supports both digital and analog RGB inputs. The digital RGB is an 8-pin female plug, with two rows of 4 pins running vertically, and the analog RGB is a 34-pin male, with two rows of 17 pins running vertically. Apparently we used to run our Amiga using a jury-rigged RGB cable with a 34-pin female end.

Does anyone have any experience with this monitor? Can anyone tell me what sort of plugs, cords, adaptors, etc. would be needed to hook it up to a console?

Is Gamesx back online yet? I would ask there. I can't check if they're back, because the sysadmin at work doesn't let me go anywhere with "game" in the URL.

Oh man! I had the same problem with my summer job last year, burg. Inexplicably, gamegomagazine.com managed to escape the "game" filter (whereas IGN, thegia, and shmups were blocked). Fortunately, my employer this summer had no such filter.

Yeah, gamesx is still down, regrettably.

That sucks. Because I was all set to try to mod my top-loader.

1,2 not connected (+5 volts on some other Sony models)
3 not connected (audio Right Channel input ground on some other Sony
models)
4 ground
5 not connected (remote control ground on some other models)
6 ground (composite video output on some other models)
7 ground (audio Left Channel input ground on some other models)
8 -16 ground
17 not connected
18 not connected (Ext / Int Sync switch mode switch on some other models)
19 not connected
20 not connected (Audio Right Channel signal input on some other models)
21 not connected (Analog / digital mode select. High (open) = analog
ground

Low (ground)= digital
This function is found NOT on th KV1311 but on some other Sony models)

22 not connected (remote control output on some other models)
23 composite video output
24 audio signal input (audio Left channel input on some other models)
25 Red analog video input
26 Green analog video input
27 Blue analog video input
28 not connected
29 fast blanking input
30 Composite Sync input (Horizontal or composite sync input on some other Sony models)
31 not connected (Vertical Sync input on some OTHER Sony models)
32 not connected (half blanking input on some other Sony monitors)

33 RGB / Normal select input high (5 volts) = RGB input selected
low (ground) composite video input selected

34 audio select high (5 volts) audio is accepted from the 34 pin RGB multiinput vide connector
low (ground) audio is accepted from the RCA Audio Input jacks on the monitor.


I got this from here. Looks like you need to connect 25,26,27,30 for RGB + Sync and pull 1,2,33 up to +5 Volts so that RGB is selected. You also need to connect all of the ground pins to the Power Supply ground. Hope this helps you.

Just my luck that school's starting up next week, otherwise this would be my newest pet project. Have to put it on the back burner for now unless I can find someone to wire a cable for me.

The monitor Im using now, a 21" Trinitron, has inputs in the back labeled R, G, and B (there are three seperate inputs). I dunno how to use them or what, and I prolly never will, but its interesting that it has them.

diffx: That is interesting, but you'd still need some kind of upscan converter if you were ever going to plug a console into the thing because the monitor outputs at a higher frequency (30 kHz as opposed to 15 kHz for consoles).

I'm sure you knew that, but I thought I'd point it out.

So, I now have that very same monitor staring me in the face right now. It's pretty.

Anyone want to build me a convertor? I want to stick all my systems on this bad boy.
