Computer Virii
After having some odd stuff happening trying to open some of the folder on my computer and having the computer freeze for 30-40 seconds at a time, so I figured it was time for a virus scan.
Low and behold, McAfee finds me a virus in my main folder, it had the boxes for Trojan and Sub7 virus checked, I went ahead and deleted it, but I have this weird feeling I've read Sub7 Virii repliate themselved and get in all sorts of nooks and cranys of your computer, is this acurate?
Anyone have any helpful info on how to see if I have more of this sub7 virus or anything besides "dont download viruses"?
(The virus had the extension of .svr so I did a "find files/folders" on *.svr and nothing came up, this is a good thing, right?)

Sub7 ain't anything to be too concerned with, I think.. Btw, it's viruses, not virii. And don't argue me on this, I've taken my latin.. =P Just thought I'd clear that up for ya so you don't make the same mistake twice..

damnit! i wanted to correct him!

Then California schools suck since I was taught that its Virii not Viruses :)

w00t! I used the worst possible add on to Viruses!

Speaking of virus scanners... what is a good free one I can get.
I would pirate Norten or something, but I have a feeling that some asshole probably put viruses in it. How perfect would that be? :)

you can always check downloads.com but in the meantime just use this once in awhile till you get a virus scanner

lol Rhydant, I win! Btw, I'm pretty sure viri ain't men... lol I could have sworn it was hominem unless that's just a different meaning.. Oh well, I've only got a year of 65 average latin under my belt, but enough to not it's viruses, not virii.. =P
88, if you like, I\'ll send you all the virus free files to McAfree through AIM..
Dunno if it would work, but it\'s worth a shot.

NGEFreek: McAfee should have thoroughly removed the virus, but you can use the resources below to double-check:
http://www.hackfix.org/subseven
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...ex/indexS.html
The Symantec site is great for information on viruses and trojans.
Remember to be extra-cautious when mucking about in DOS or in the Registry.
88: You could try
http://www.grisoft.com
or
http://www.free-av.com,
but I suggest you spring for Norton and keep the definitions up-to-date. AV protection is not an install-it-and-forget-about-it prospect. Also use a firewall - at the very least the one that ships with XP (if you have that). Also look here:

Zone Alarm (the zonelabs link that Nick gave) is a very good firewall. You can even "Stealth" your computer while you're at it, so it becomes invisible to would be hackers.
GRC
Here's a site to check out with regards to other computer security issues. While you're at it, you can test your security with their "Shields Up" thing.
