Guys, guys... it's not a real title. It's AGB's continuation of experimenting with creating a 3d FPS engine and how far they can take it. So far everything they've been making progress with each passing day.
Yeah, it's ugly :P But it's not something that's going to be released to the public anyway. And developers can tweak it to make it prettier as well.
That and they're creating a 3D engine on a system that wasn't meant for 3D.
3D has no place on GBA IMO ;)

I think it's pretty lame; they've been making progress every month to get something that looks like *points up* THAT, but I don't see such pained efforts to push 2D in such a way. Oh my, you mean, put forth the same amounnt of effort they've put into 3D graphics, but instead do it for 2D, seeing as how that's what the GBA was made for?
Man, I don't see anyone trying to make the GC, PS2, or XBox do what they aren't supposed to do with such fevor...meaning, I don't see anyone pushing the next-gen envelope for 2D.

No offense, Hero, but what more can 2d do?
Do you want to see GBA cel shaded games or something? Aside from that, I'm not sure what the difference is between this generation's 2d games and the 16 bit generation. Obviously you're not going to get hi-res out of the GBA, so I'm not sure what you're complaining about...
And the GBA does have 2d games in spades, so relax... one company trying to pursue the perfect 3d engine won't kill it. I mean, just look at Castlevania: White Night Concerto/Harmony of Dissonance for an example of some awesome 2d effects on the GBA.
The main limiter of GBA 2d is just the crappy resolution. Maybe if Nintendo designed it with TV-output in mind, companies would try to make games with better resolutions. But with cart sizes and no TV-out in mind, you're stuck with graininess whether you like it or not.

Okay. I LIKE those shots. I'm very dissapointed that they couldn't get the actual models in there, and had to butcher them to high hell, but I'm impressed.
...And I wouldn't mind 3D on the GBA, so I guess I'm an idiot for hoping for something that "shouldn't" exist. :rolleyes:
Anyway, once they can get the original Q1 models on there, I'll play it.
Yeah, what's wrong with a little experimenting and exploring? So it looks like pixelly crap, it's Quake on the GBA, what'd you expect? It's still interesting, and I think the developers are meeting a lofty challenge pretty well. On top of all that, who knows what this could contribute to actual GBA games that the naysayers around here would like. Pushing the hardware is always a good thing.Quote:

I didn't think Quake was all that and a bag of chips in the first place, although it burned some extra hours from just playing the demo... I remember my first PC almost not being able to handle this game and now it comes out on a handheld. :) I think that's impressive.
Otherwise, if they release ports like these, they should enhance them, there are SO many more ways to make these games more interesting than a 3-5 year old game would normally be...

More frames of animation, larger sprites, more parralax, more sprite rotation, more detail, higher res, and so on. 2D got cut down right before it could really hit its stride, and so few companies have even tried to take 2D to what it could be (SNK, Capcom, random offerings from Square and Namco), though it's not entirely their fault (they must make money to survive).
Before you also state a lot of that couldn't be done on the GBA, Hero did also state about 2D being done on any current-gen systems (aside from the DC, which was forced out thanks to it having so many good games). The GBA can still be pushed much farther then it has been, C:CotMS is a big glowing symbol of that.

ah, I really wasn't trying to make that the usual 2D soapbox rant. What I was trying to point out is how something like this (read 3D on GBA) is taken as an 'interesting exploration in experimentation' to some and 'r0xor, 3D on GBA to others), whereas something that 'shouldn't be possible, but is tried anyway) such as 2D on PS2, et al. isn't even taken with much attention. I mean, if we want to talk about how much 3D a 2D system can push, what about how much 2D a 3D system can do? What about, I dunno, actually pushing each system for its specific strengths? Meaning...you know, try to do good 3D on an XBox (which is attempted - often) while doing good 2D on a GBA.
And MechDues hit it on the head. Not to mention 2D with so much RAM at hand that, maybe, just maybe, you could 'fake' things like real-time lighting...?

I'll say it again but I'd love to see Castlevania HOD done Contra Shattered Soldier style. And I agree with Mech and Hero on 2D on 3D systems, they have more than enough to do them, I just wished developers had the balls to use it.

Those enemies resemble a bucket of chicken after Roseanne got done with it. EGADS.
Doom gba had multiple angles for sprites unlike its snes older brother, which meant you could never sneak behind a sprite and see its back on the snes game. :DQuote:

And one of the probs with sprites in a fps is having to animate all those angles smoothly.
Everyone talks about how ugly 3d looks, but never comments on animation and how the animation would be smoother using polys. If they could get even simple polys going on the lil gba with nice smooth animation at mutiple angles and not tax the system too bad or compromise framerate, then this would be more important to gameplay imo. Sure 2d is great for certain types of games (side scrollers, shooters etc) but some genres I think 3d is needed. If I want to shoot someone on the shoulder or a particular area of the body and the sprite is at a funny angle I won't get the same accuracy as if I could see the actual polgonal model moving around 3d space.
I found that in games like Duke 3d (uses sprites) it was very hard to aim at enemies at different angles like when they were flying in the air, or you were on top of a building looking down at the sprites and they had this ugly skewering effect which fucked up your aiming. What you thought was his head, wasn't part of his body and you ended up not hitting him. 3d graphics and polys could solve these problems. It's a worthwhile cause. I would think the fps genre with 3d environments would be very suitable for the little gba because of its simple connectivity to play games networked. (so easy to set up. And it's portable. The next step would be for nintendo to have some sort of wireless set up so you can play your friends on a train or something) If the polys look ugly, and the textures pixelly, then so be it. I still think an ugly-but-true 3d polygonal environment is more desirable for a networked fps then just representing everything as flat sprites with half-assed animation frames and collision detection, and flat-but-pretty environments. The 3dness ofthe environments helps to immerse you into the game imo. And the polys represent and show more information about the environment and the things you are trying to shoot. (what angle they are heading in, whether your aiming reticle is right on them and is actually going to result in a hit; and on where on the body it will go etc) It's different for other genres though.
I think it's great. I love to see a system pushed like that. I remember marvelling at some 3D game on the Genesis. I was using Sega Channel and got to see a 3D game I'd read about but never played (I think it was Zero Tolerance). I was raving to a roommate about how they were using the Z-80 sound chip to help process the graphics, but he didn't seem to think it was interesting at all -- he just talked about how much better 3D looked on his PC. I wouldn't want to play an FPS on the GBA, but I do admire the ingenuity of the programmers.
Why are the companies doing 3D on the GBA and no 2D on the consoles? Don't blame the companies, blame the gamers. Casual gaming is where the money is. Why make a game like Rez that sits on the shelves when you can burn up the charts with Wolfenstein 3D Clone #8732?
I like it. Engines like this can lead to games with more open-ended gameplay in addition to the bucket-loads of 2D games. More variety = good for us gamers.
This just seems like a terrible waste. You can do 3d games well on any of the other systems avaiable to gamers - that's all people do on every other system. On the one system that has any shot of getting potentially great new 2d games, the GBA, I've seen loads of SNES ports and people futzing around with ugly 3d games. What's the point? Are people at the point where they only play 3d games, even on portables, and even if the graphics are necessarily terrible?
I can't speak for anyone else, but considering I have a high RPG/SRPG/strategy dosage on my GBA, sometimes I just wanna go kill stuff FPS-style.
It's all about variety. It's not like one company (AGB Games) in pursuit of the perfect GBA 3d engine is going to hamper 2d progress on it. And it's also false to assume that wanting a little 3d on the GBA means I'm opposed to 2d. Far from it. But if I can get a little FPS action amidst the platformers, RPGs, action games and such, what's wrong with that?

Although I do think Quake is a little too much for the GBA to handle, especially with its lack of buttons.

Long ago when the GBA was first announced I was under the impression that SMA was a new Mario game using the SMB2 engine. Odd premise, but it still had me very excited. When I found out it was just SMB2 again, bleh. The "big" launch game wasn't just an NES game, it was an NES game based off a famicom game that was also on the SNES. How lame is that?
The developers are doing this for the challenge. They want to see how far they can push the Game Boy Advance. They want to see the system do stuff that Nintendo said it couldn't. The fact that it's not gonna come out in boxed form proves as much.
So why the hell are you guys bagging on these coders? They aren't WASTING their time, theyre not doing stupid stuff because the system's 3D looks ugly. They are doing it just to do it. For that reason... I think it's a cool thing.
As for the 2D/3D thing... blargh. BUt you know... with the GBA, I would take some creativity (yea, yea, its just Quake, but its pretty creative cause they crammed it in there) over Nintendo's game strategy. As much as I like the SNES, I want more than just the SNES games I beat already on my GBA!
