I can see the G4 beating out an older Athlon in Photoshop, if there's only a 200MHZ difference. The G4 was designed with Photoshop in mind afterall.

i use a pc at home and g4 mac's at school using primarily quark, front page, illustrator and photoshop. the only difference i see is that the macs lock up and crash....A LOT. but i know this is because 1) too many ppl are using one machine and 2)the amount of ram they actually have is paltry as well as the amount of unnecessary stuff they have installed in these things. other than that fact which is not the fault of the system i really see no difference myself using those particular apps.
but i have always also wanted to get a mac myself.
Yeah, I should have phrased that better--I get an educational discount since I work for a University, so I could buy the PC version of some of the software, like Photoshop and Microsoft Office....and I sometimes see stores selling PC versions of software cheaper (and not the Mac version at all).Quote:

Last time i checked, software was priced the same.
Where PC definetley triumphs is in the pirated software field.
PC.
but yeah if I ordered from Adobe, they would cost the same...

your school should have MAC edu software as well (strange), check out www.studica.com - - - awesome site for discounts.
...and Johnny im having my tech nerd buddy build me a super PC (specifically for 3D max and gaming) for the hell of it...i'll post the details when it happens.
Thanks for the link...my school has some Mac software, just not as good a selection as for the PC...mostly like the 1,000 bundles, etc....Quote:

rendering in Maya,.....
right now nothing beats an AMD processor for 3d software rendering
ive used all 3 platforms professionally and ill tell you
1. Irix (the SGI OS) beats every other OS ever made with out even trying and its what a good 5 - 10 years old now, and OSX isnt all that spectacular or advanced its bassicaly putting a graphical interface ontop of a scripting based OS (aqua the interface of mac runs ontop of a modified unix core) which really isnt all that different from what windows was in the first place a graphical interface for DOS, but it doesnt matter cause Irix humiliates both of them and linux, if i could run Irix on my home machine i would
2. For 3D graphics work nothing beats a PC nothing cept maybe the brand new top of the line SGI machines but those are way out of the price range of everyone cept Pixar and the government, sorry you cant beat facts trust me ive seen the comparrisions WITH maya PCs just render faster, the velocity chip is geared towards vectors and 2d why it rocks in photoshop, also on the PC you have the fast 3d Processors out there the Wildcat cards im sorry but nothing touches these cards NOTHING while the geforce cards are great for gaming they just can not hold a candle to the wildcat cards for professional 3d work the wildcat cards and the oxygen ones (both owned by 3dlabs now) just amazing cards
3. Macs are great for photoshop and print work, mostly because every print house is a mac house and they refuse to touch anything else they also many of them stick with Quark which is shit IMHO compared to illustrator and quark hasnt had a full update in years
4. macs seem to be the standard for music and sound editing no idea why its really not my thing, some people will also try to tell you theyre the best for video editing these people are smoking crack though, an SGI Octane (which is an older model workstation) will chuck around HDTV res video and playback multiple streams of it like its nothing SGI's machines are the place to be for video editing theyll do things with out breaking a sweat that would bring a mac or PC to its knees
anyway the point of this was each system is good for different things as a 3D animator thats worked on all 3 id take working on a PC over any of the other 2 anyday
in regards to statement 4 shinjohnny.....
illustrator isnt a page layout program, quark and in design are. illustrator is for vector graphics, you output the graphics built in Illustrator to Quark or InDesign. those programs are built for letter setting and overall layout (im talking brochures, booklets, ec),,,,it could be the graphics card hat makes the difference.
in regards to Maya, come to my house one of these days and watch the head to head rendering competition (i just got a 20" trinitron for my PC)
just thought id provide some hard facts
if you check out http://www.highend3d.com/tests/maya/...er/database.3d
its a professionaly run render test for maya
now i did the test 2 years back when i only had 384 megs of ram on my machine and i was running windows NT i also did it under Maya 3.0 i beleive i got a render time of 4 minutes 27 seconds
now just to let you know they did alot of tweaks and the renderer in maya 4.0 is much faster (the version on the mac is called 3.5 because its maya 3.0 but has the 4.0 renderer)
ok now the fastest mac on there was a Dual processor g4 both at 1 ghz with 512 megs of ram it rendered it at a blazzing 4 minutes and 7 seconds (and yes maya's renderer is multithreaded so it would take advantage of both cpu's)
so with 2 processors a supposed faster OS and more ram the fastest mac beat my machine with its old setup by 20 seconds ill have to render this test again see what speed i get now since im running 2k and have 512 megs of ram but everything else is the same ohh and now that im running maya 4
just to let you know the fastest PC on the list was a dual AMD machine both 1740 processors with 512 megs of ram it rendered it in 31 seconds using maya 4
Macs do not render 3d faster than PCs
look at my post and youll see i proved you wrong on MayaQuote:

like i said ive worked with it on all 3 platforms professionally just cause you have a shitty PC and a decent make doesnt make the statement for all of them
also i know plent of people who do print work and do everything in illustrator now this is mostly poster work and ads for magazines not entire books and they all do this because theyre sick of quark and cant stand it any more so *shrug*
i mean that is unless your going to ignore hard facts like an entire test center where the fastest mac doesnt show up till page 15 and only beats my PC when it had less ram by a whopping 20 seconds
