I'm just wondering how non-Japanese speakers enjoy this game. There are a few rabid fans on this board, and it's quite convincing, but if you don't know the language, how do you get through it or enjoy it? I know it has a translation, but not in-game it seems to be an awkward fix.
And if a person were to jump right into ST3 (without ever playing 1 or 2), would it make any difference?
You really should play ST1 and ST2 before 3 to get all the nuances but it isn't really neccesary (so long as you play them eventually). And I never used a translation for ST3 but I jumped in with limited knowledge of only katakana/hiragana and learned a lot of words as I went on and it kept me interested...I did try using the translation but it was just too tedious for me honestly. But you may like the translation idea, so to each his own! I can only speak what I know and think however....
I've got hiragana, katakana and a few kanji down, but my vocab is weak, which limits my reading ability greatly.
I think my best bet is the translation. I better stock up on paper. ;)
Sakura Taisen 3 is one of the best, if not the best, dreamcast game ever. Yes, it is a must play. I only understand some spoken Japanese and I got by just fine with the translation. Went through a box of paper for the whole serious though. :p
You can start at 3, though it'll make you want to play the others anyway. You won't get some things, but you should be fine with most of it.
Actually, if you have a palm or win ce device/similar(linux too now?) you can use that to read the translation instead of paper....just my .02
3 is pretty much the best place to start for people that haven't.
If you don't like 3, it'll be safely assumed you won't like the rest, either.
Investigate this statement further if you want to spoil yourself: knowledge of anything from ST1 and/or 2 isn't needed to play 3.
I should play the thing again... or at least get K Knuckle on my save file...
Ugh, I just remembered all the pain I had to endure to unlock Kaiser Knuckle. Damn, the mini-game is a lot of fun, but the pain of memorization... the pain...
I'd say the only problem with playing 3 first is the battles are a lot better and more fun, which will make the battles in 1 and 2 seem more tedious if you decide to play them. Of course, you could wait for the remakes of 1 and 2 on PS2 which will have the newer battle system, but I have no idea when they'll be out.
Ah, remakes that... might make it here in English? That would be all too convenient.

I think it was confirmed for eventual (think a year or more away) US release, but there's a 99% chance that they'll be dubbed, which would make 100% chance of me not buying them. The voice acting of the Sakura Taisen series is perfect and should not be touched, which only sounds elitist if you haven't played the games and heard it for yourself.
I'd say go ahead and buy ST3 now to keep you busy until the remakes start hitting, because I don't think you should wait that long to try Sakura Taisen. Oh, and definitely skip 4 unless you're a completist. It was way too short and incomplete.
