The best LucasArts adventure game?
So, LucasArts. Was once the best PC development group out there. Sadly, they now lie in shambles, pushing crap like Escape from Monkey Island.
Now, my thoughts on each game:
The SCUMM Engine Legacy:
- Maniac Mansion. This one started it all. Gotta give it credit for that. To be honest, I never did get to finish this game, unless you consider the "Nuke" ending "finishing". It had some nice puzzles, and some memorable moments.
- Zak McKraken and the Alien Mindbenders. (Not on the poll!) I have yet to play this game. I'll pick it up, some day.
- Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. (Not on the poll!) I didn't get too far in this one, either. It seemed like a nice adaptation of the movie, with enough LucasArts charm.
- Monkey Island. Easily one of my favorites. I think the series is a perfect definition of everything LucasArts. Also, the puzzles in this one were great, as was the humor. And LeChuck has the most memorable villian music in history.
- Loom. Short, but very nice. The visuals were great, the interface was very original, the puzzles were nice, and the music was perfect.
- Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. The shining point of the Monkey Island games, in my opinion. Everything Monkey Island did well, this one did better.
- Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. (Not on the poll) I didn't finish this one, but came close on two of the three paths. An excellent game, and I believe it was the first LucasArts adventure to be available on a CD, with speech. The fist-fighting wasn't the best, and some of the puzzles were kinda dull, but it was a great game.
- Day of the Tentacle. This one was excellent. The time-travel was a good idea, the characters were memorable, and the visuals were beautiful. And the music wasn't bad, either.
- Sam and Max Hit the Road. Another great game. The interface was a bit different, but it worked, and the characters were just as memorable as the DOTT characters. The acting was great, too. Also, this could be the most humorous of all the LucasArts games.
- Full Throttle. (Not on the poll!) I recently finished this one, and I must say, it's a VERY nice game. The interface was different, but worked well. Much like LOOM, the game's only flaw was it's length. Oh, and the biking fights, but they weren't too bad.
- The Dig. (Not on the poll!) I didn't get too far into it. It's on my list. The art seemed nice, but the puzzles and characters were somewhat lacking.
- The Curse of Monkey Island. (Not on the poll!) The third Monkey Island game, and the FINAL SCUMM engine game. Easily the best-looking LucasArts adventure game to date. The game wasn't quite as good as LeChuck's Revenge, but it wasn't a huge let-down, either.
The GrimE engine legacy:
- Grim Fandango. An excellent game, and a great new interface. The visuals were excellent, even with the low-poly characters. The puzzles were great, and the voice acting was perfect. Same goes for the music.
- Escape from Monkey Island. (Not on the poll!) I didn't finish this one, and I really don't want to. I mean, what happened? The visuals are lifeless, and the puzzles are dull. Maybe I'll finish it, someday, but I hope LucasArts' next adventure game (assuming there will be another) had better be good.
My choice? Monkey Island: LeChuck's Revenge.
ARGH! Maximum of seven Poll choices. Damn. Well, I had to snip some games. Some omissions were hard, namely Fate of Atlantis and Full Throttle.
