Taito's Jungle Hunt does not get enough credit for what it did for the platform genre. This 1982 arcade release took Pitfall-style gameplay a step further with fully side-scrolling levels. Actually, considering it dates from the same year as Pitfall!, I'm not even certain which game came first although Pitfall! would seem most logical.
Jungle Hunt came out on several home formats: computers, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Colecovision, etc. I haven't played most of the versions and I only own the 2600 one. Even the 2600 version is very impressive. It has some of the best graphics on the system and it even has parallax scrolling.
The game is divided into a few different levels which cycle again once you beat them. First there is a vine swinging level, then a swimming level, then a boulder-jumping level and then you rescue your woman from natives.
Anyone a fan? I'm dying to know which home version is the best.
