All four of my wisdom teeth were impacted and growing in almost sideways so last year I had all four removed all at once. And I didn't get knocked out for it like some of you pussies. ;) I don't know, I just have this thing about getting knocked out- unless they're cracking my chest open, I just want to be awake for it. I've heard too many stories about people having bad reactions...well, anyway, after trying to talk me into getting put out and me refusing, the doctor gives me a million shots of novacane, and once it takes effect he starts on my teeth. #1 comes out, no problem. #2 gives him a little bit of trouble, but still, no problem. At this point I begin to wonder what all the fuss about getting wisdom teeth yanked was. I mean, this was no big deal. Then we hit #3...man, oh, man. He couldn't get it out. He ended up having to drill it into sections and remove it piece by piece. That sucked. #4 was a pain in the ass too, but not quite as bad as #3. In the middle of doing #3, the doc asked if I regretted not getting put to sleep...fucking wiseass. Despite how bad it was, I don't regret staying awake. This way, when I was done, I just got right up and left. They gave me painkillers (Oxycodone, the stuff Wynona Ryder was busted for having) and antibiotics and I was told that they would put me right to sleep. They didn't even make me drowsy. I just spent the rest of the day playing videogames, going to the mall, and changing my gauze every 20 minutes or so to soak up all the blood. Pain really wasn't an issue (I guess I have a high tolerance for it), but the swelling was- my jaw was HUUUGE. It took about a good two weeks for my face to get back to normal. Not fun. However, I still can't understand people getting put out for this- I work with a guy who had ONE WISDOM TOOTH removed and he got knocked out for it- what a total pansy!!
But that wasn't the end of it. When I had the x-ray done during the exam before I had my wisdom teeth taken out, they discovered that an old root canal I had done years ago had failed and the root of the tooth had become massively infected. I knew the tooth hurt, but I assumed it was because of the impacted wisdom teeth. So, 4 days after getting my wisdom teeth removed, I was back in the dentist's chair, this time to get something called an Apicoectomy. This involves cutting open the gum, drilling a hole in the jaw so the root of the infected tooth is exposed, removing the tip of the root, filling it in, and sewing the gum back up. Once again, I remained awake. This procedure was actually worse than getting the wisdom teeth out, since it was on one of my rear molars and they needed to use something ankin to a gaint metal shoehorn to hold my mouth open wide enough. Man, did this suck. To top it all off, the Apicoectomy failed, the infection came back, and I had to have it re-done twice. Although the second 2 times weren't that bad since it was just a quick clean-up of the infection- the hole in my jaw hadn't closed up yet. However, this time the infection's gone (just had a check up and an x-ray revealed that it had healed nicely). Man, am I happy that shit is over with. Anyway, I have a lot less fear of the dentist now, since I've already been through hell. I also have a lot less sympathy for people getting oral surgery... :)
I don't get the point of putting yourself through any unnecessary agony. Had I not been allergic to the stuff in the IV, it would've been the best thing ever...oh well. As far as 'taking the pain like a man' or whatever...If you get shot and are able to take the pain without flinching, you're a pretty big man. If you have the option to experience no pain at all at the dentist of all places, but instead choose to stay awake, you're either a masochist or a pretty big idiot. :p
I only had three wisdom teeth, and the procedure went fairly well, but I had to go back for them to suck some fluid out of my cheek.
Maybe you'll get a kick out of this:

I'm neither, sucka. :p There was no pain involved because of the novacane, just discomfort. Honestly, not getting knocked out wasn't some big macho display at all, I'm just even more unconfortable with the idea of being put asleep than I am about being awake while teeth are being ripped from my head. It was the lesser of two evils, for me at least. Besides, that way I could drive myself home instead of fucking up someone else's schedule so they could drive me around while I'm doped up. It just seemed pratical.Quote:

I still have ALL my wisdom teeth. They are "perfect"
I had an extra tooth on the roof of my mouth. It had to be taken out. During the operation, I was put to sleep. During the operation, I woke up in the middle. My ass was wiggling, and jiggling in the seat that they had to hold me down, tie me down and restrain me. I heard from my mom that I kicked the doctor during all that movement.
Got mine out, bout 3 months ago..
Day 1 : Went home spit up blood all day
Day 2 : No swelling, stayed home from school, so i went to the mall
Day 3 : still no swelling went to mall once again.
Day 4 : The pain hit....Stayed in bed all day with ice
Day 5 : wtf? i can't remeber anything pertaning to day 5
day 6 : currently living on nothing but 8 advil gel caps, and 6 tylonal 3's codeen (sp?) mom said i could take both because they were different....I had fun at school.
For the rest of the week i had fun with my 8 advil, and took plenty of Tylonal 3's! Love that healing power!!:D
Speaking of blood, I would be squirting blood like a water pistol. It would happen if I would suck..NOT that kind of suck (perverts), suck as in sucking candy. Once blood started squirting, I would have to put lots of cotton ball in my mouth. Doctor said, if it didnt stop the bleeding, I would have to be rushed to the hospital. Luckily that didnt happen.
I only have my top two, and they seem to be coming in fine....one is all the way out, the other is out except for a little bit of gum covering one side...they're coming in straight, but they're pushing my other teeth over a bit or something....when I bite down, my teeth feel shifted different than how they were.
And, I don't know why, but my dentist never gives gas, just like 10 fucking needles in my gum everytime I get a cavity filled, and those needles hurt more than the actual cavity or drilling....I had a root canal a couple months ago though, let me tell you....the tooth got so infected practically overnight, it filled up with blood and everything (it was a front tooth) so much the pressure was blurring my vision....and the dentist still didn't give me gas, I had to get thirteen needles, and he had to jab those fuckers right into the swollen nerve....that was the worst pain I ever had, I had my appendix out like a month later, and that was nothing compared to the mouth stuff, it barely even hurt.....
