The game is now in stores. My copy is in the mail from Amazon, and I'll buy the GBA version probably tonight. Anyone here bought the game and have a review for us? TIA.

I wonder if that poor smeg in Europe got his copy yet :)
I will not buy this game... just in opposition to Acclaims disgusting marketing campaigns.
i liek it so far reminds me alot of the first Turok which is deffinetly a good thing
only playe dliek the first 2 levels so far
lots and lot sof plant life here its everywhere
graphics are a little less than i expected but when you realise how much there is you understand why
only things id really complain about would be the lack of custom controls and the loading if its like this on GC i cant imagine what the loading must belike on PS2
Looks like I'm the guinea pig. Here you go:
EARLY IMPRESSIONS OF TUROK (Xbox rev)
I've played the game through the first 3 episodes (each is broken up into several stages). So, these impressions are going to be a bit rough.
I always hear the phrase "graphics are unimportant" or "graphics don't matter to me", which I find ludicrous when we are talking about a visual medium. So, screw whoever it may apply it to, and I will begin with the graphics. In a word: weird. The games looks downright odd, with very bright "colorform" colors, some blocky shapes, and strangely bland textures that pixelate like 4th of July fireworks when you get close to the object. Your first thought may well be that it looks like the orginial N64 version. It doesn't, of course, but you won't be floored by any stretch of the imagination. On the plus side, the animations are generally very good and very smooth. There are TONS of highly detailed fauna running all over the place: tucans and parrots, deer, raptors, hordes of monkeys, and any manner of insects, all buzzing, hopping, eating, and fluttering about. It creates a stark contrast to (and perhaps makes up for) the bland environmental graphics. (By the way, you may wish to exercise some discretion when killing the animals -- "oh look, a swarm of gibbons is suddenly coming toward me.") Pretty immersive on the whole, and frankly, the game either got much prettier as I played, or more likely, I just got used to it.
Level design is critical in an FPS game, and I haven't played enough to offer a firm opinion. The first level (including the sub-stages) is a joke, and will have you wondering what the hell Iguana was doing for the last few years. The whole game seems VERY linear, and the environments (in the early levels, anyway) are VERY restricive: the shrubbery acts as a "wall", making sure that the Son of Stone goes keeps on the one path that gets you through the level. However, things opened up a bit as I played, and some exploration is required to find the goodies (yep, weapon upgrades). Still, so far there's been health and ammo all over the place, and I've generally moved along a pretty straight line to get through the levels.
As you know, this game has pteradactyl flying levels, and I've done one of them (again, there were several sub-stages). You've got unlimited machine gun fire, and limited lock-on missiles, with power-ups and health that can be picked up on the fly (pun intended). Parts of it were on very narrow rails and played like a dumbed-down Panzer game. However, other parts open up for "free" flight and were quite a bit more fun. At first, the controls seems stiff, but what do you expect? You're flying on a bird's back! I got used to it quickly, and like I said, there was some fun to be had in the fairly simple aerial battles. On the plus side, there were a TON of enemies in the air and on the ground, so there's quite of bit of animation and action on the screen.
Toward the end of my short stint with the game, things were improving a bit. I was encountering multiple enemies who occasionally employed some actual tactics, included the vaunted "squad tactics": enemies taking cover (and doing it well); falling back and re-grouping; one guy charging with a heavy gun, while snipers opened up once you went on the move; tossing grenades to flush you out, etc. Frankly, it was pretty fun, and it's too bad I had to get some sleep since I was starting to really have some fun.
THE GOOD STUFF: Very simply, the weapons and death animations. Almost all of the weapons have secondary functions. They all look exremely cool, and the have slick animation when "transforming" into the secondary function. E.g., you pistol converts in to a modified sniper rifle -- scope snaps up, stock unfolds, and you immediately go into a funky fish-eye zoom view. The traditional Tek bow is there, with 5x and 10x zoom (SWEET!). And boy, the enemies really die with style. Gouts of blood, limbs flying, heads exploding, neck stumps spurting, gagging and retching (from poision tipped arrows), collapsing like rag dolls, etc.
I gotta run, so maybe I'll post a bit more later. Here's three more quick points: Sound: fine (jungle music, with "danger" crescendos) with good sound effects. Control: just like Halo and other Xbox FPSs. Framerate: seems to be 30 -- it stayed smooth, and Turok moves at a brisk pace (unlike Master Chief).
There's a boatload of what would appear to be cool multiplayer games, but I haven't checked them out yet. {One of them is called "Monkey Tag" which involves holding onto a monkey as long as possible. Really.)
So far, it's been decent and there's hope of some real fun ahead. We'll see.
Thanks for the reviews, guys. Hope to hear more as you get the chance to play more. I should have my GBA version soon, and I can't wait to try out the Metal Slug gameplay.
Maybe I didn't play far enough, but I tried it, and it was nothing like MS.Quote:

my quick impressions of Turok
Well ive always been a Turok fan, and say what you will about Akklaim but they arent all that bad. Besides bringing us some great shooters to the US during the saturn days and bringing us (to the US) X-men Children of the Atom for the saturn, they also gave us IMHO one of the best Console FPS series out there, Turok.
The first thing youll notice is just how much plant life is every where, hell how much animal life is every where too. Every where i turned there was something be it lush green plants or some damn bugs buzzing around my head or deer drinking from a small river the game is just loaded with life. Youll come to praise the vegetation, I cant tell you how much i love hidding in some dense folliage to whip out my tek bow and take down a bunch of enemies before they even seen me, or to hide deep in the plants while some Raptors sniff around for me.
I'll tell you this, the game reminds me of the first Turok ALOT, just the lay out of the interface, the overall feel of the game, even the lay out of the levels so far seem much more like the first Turok than others in the series have. Which is a good think, so far i think the first one was the best in the series, but this has a good chance of knocking the king off his moutain.
one big complaint i have is that you cant create custome controls and they only give you 2 different options, which means i have to get used to using both sticks to walk and look, i personally prefer a set up where i can map walking forward and back to say the r button and use the main stick for looking around.
I've played through about 5 or 6 of the levels now, each chapter is broken down into a couple smaller levels. Im really liking the normal levels but the flying ones are kinda leaveing me flat, Im not sure why yet, but I dont know maybe after ive spent more time with them ill like them more. Right now though im just not sure what it is yet i dont like.
Overall i like the game though so far, its nothing super spectacular but its fun. I deffinetly like it more than Halo, theres just a variety here, be it in the weapons, in the levels, in the game play, that Halo just lacks. Theres something like over 30 weapons here when you factor in all the upgrades and different kinds of ammo you can get. EX Ive allready gotten regular arros, posion arrows, and explosive arrows, it just keeps the game fresh.
Plus ohh man you want to see deaths, they dont just gurgle and fall over here. You have dino heads popping, limbs coming off, rivers of dino blood flowing.
LIke i said i like the game so far, its no GotY contender, but if you like console FPS' its a must own then.
Well, I don't really know what to make of this so far... sounds dissapointing though =/
To anyone that was a fan of the first trilogy, how does it compare? I personall liked the three first games a lot, each for their own reasons even though they were all flawed in their own ways as well. I thought 3 was a pleasant suprise so I had high hopes for this one..
well like i said i think if your a fan of the series youll like the game
its not going to blow your socks off but youll like it
it reminds me of the first one alot
just dont go in expecting it to revolutionize the FPS genre but its still fun and its a good console FPS
i really think if you liked the other turoks youll like this
