I recently prucahsed a lot of Beatmania games for the japanese PSX. I have a modded PSX but it would load the appends without a game shark. I'd actually much rather have a Japanese PSX. Does anyone know where I could go about obtaining one and how much I should expect to spend. Any info pertaining would be much appreciated.
It still baffles me a bit that I have never seen any major import retailers (such as NCS or VGD) carry import PS systems. Maybe I just missed something...

Just get an import PS2. That way you can play import PSX games with faster loading and (barely) smoother textures AND play import PS2 discs to boot AND watch import DVDs.

Thanks for the links. I suppose that aside from Ebay, there aren't any import PSXes to be had. The prices for the PSones aren't too bad though. As for the thought of getting an import PS2, I just don't feel comfortable investing hundreds of dollars on a piece of hardware that I don't think is very reliable. What are import 2s going for these days?

How much do chipped PSOnes go for?
Modchips are $10US now, so if you do the work yourself it'll run you $60US.
If you're looking to play PSone games, definitely get an actual Japanese PSone/PSX. Many games run slower/have problems when played on a PS2. Best to just play them the way it was intended. As for a source, maybe talk to SevenForce, PaCrappa, or look into Aki_Direct.
I'm having a problem with my DDR 3rd mix playing on a US PS with a Goldfinger. It seems I can't load 2nd mix at the disk change screen. Does this feature not work without an import PS? I really want to play the second mix songs with the 3rd mix interface...
i also have the goldfinger and I am having problems with Tobal No.1...I can't hear any of Yasunori Mitsuda's beautiful soundtrack!! The game is missing nearly half of it's force without it, hence, I too am looking for a Japanese PS1, the original, not the new, little version.

It works fine for me with a modded psOne. Going through 3rd mix is the only way I can get 1st and 2nd mix to run. If I try to play them directly, they detect my modchip.Quote:

That's where I got mine from. Honestly, trying to find a better deal is insanely hard; most Ebayers bundle in a bunch of stuff so the bids go well into the $300+ (all I wanted was the core system), and they're $5 cheaper then NCS (negligable, sure, but I don't know what NCS' shipping is at that price and it's cheap as hell at VGD).Quote:

I want the original model to go with the rest of my video game collection. The small one just screams out of place and 'new' NOT ORIGINAL! I always prefer the original versions of consoles...3DO, original Saturn, I need a front loading Sega CD, original Genesis, etc. I dunno, as a collector, it's just a weird thing I have. The new PSone's are cute and look all neat and everything, but they just don't match my system collection. I'd pick one up some day as a spare or portable PSone just for the hell of it if I needed...Quote:

You never know how the person that had the system before you treated it...
meh, i don't care, as long as the unit is clean/unscratched and has no actual problems with it, I'm all good with used purchases. In all the years of gaming (since the age of 6 or 7) I've never, ever had a problem with a used game I've purchased.
As long as you know where to buy used games, you should be just fine. Avoid places with bad track records, and check out new places once in a while.
