Movies that mess with your head.

I've recently bought a DVD Freedom Pass at my Block Buster Video, and I plan on making the most out of it. Now, there is a particular form of film that really enjoy, those that really mess with your head, and make you stop and think. Movies in which:

- The main character isn't really who they think they are. (Fight Club)
- The world they inhabit isn't actually real (The Truman Show, The Matrix, Dark City).
- Anything having to do with the fragile nature of the human mind (Memento, Being John Malchovic(sp?)).

And just about any movie that has some shocking revalation at the end.


So make some recommendations.
And please, no foriegn films.

Audition, 2001, and Vanilla Sky.

Oops, I forgot to mention, that this thread was inspired by recent viewings of Waking Life and Vanilla Sky.

Bah, I say. You must have reasons for your aversions but if you do get around to them, try watching any Andrei Tarkovsky movie for a crash course in open interpative movies.

- The main character isn't really who they think they are
Blade Runner naturally. Watch it with some friends and have a discussion on the fate and origin of Harrison Ford's character (not even Ford and Ridley Scott can agree).

- The world they inhabit isn't actually real
Totall Recall. Not as good as Blade Runner but still a decent brain noodler though the answer to Arnie's fate can be picked up by watching small clues in the beginning of the movie.

- Anything having to do with the fragile nature of the human mind
Another natural choice: The Shining.

I forgot to consider the fact you're renting from Blockbuster. The best they ever get is Gerrad Depardieu nonsense.

Try eXistenZ, Jacob's Ladder and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? if you haven't seen them already. I could name many (esp if you're only going on awesome endings) but alot would be foreign. And you may see Audition at your Blockbuster but it'll probably be the edited version.

Also check out Videodrome and Naked Lunch (not on DVD) by Cronenberg if...well...you like Cronenberg. eXistenZ is a Cronenberg movie as well but everyone needs to see that movie. Videodrome and Naked Lunch, on the other hand, have some really fucking weird shit going on that most people may not want to see. I'd say if you haven't seen them and if you're up for weirdness then see all three of these Cronenberg movies.

Prepare for a total mindfuck.

Rumpy: Yes, requiem for a dream is quite the mind fuck, but not in the way Regus means it. Though I do THOROUGHLY recommend it.

Try an Australian movie called "Lantana". It just came out on DVD over here, but its only just hit the cinemas in the UK, so I don't know if its out in the US yet. I think its won every single award its been nominated for in every award ceremony. Its slow, but really good.

"THE OTHERS"ending caught me completely off guard.I didnt see that coming!And the "FIGHT CLUB"ending did the same.
