I know most people haven't beaten Sunshine yet but I think most people who own it have played it enough to make a decision.

It's too hard to be objective with this one. Mario 64 was practically a religious experience in 1996, SMS doesn't have that effect.
I think if I could force myself to look at them logically I'd pick SMS, but nostalgia, general awe, wow factor, and memories are winning.
I started playing Sunshine about four hours ago and it's bested Mario 64 in every way so far except for the giant Bowser battles (but I'm not far enough to say Sunshine won't), and has wowed me more now then Mario 64 did back then. Sunshine is a friggin' work of art.
And I can't figure out why some people are complaining about the graphics. The morphing, dripping, and coloring are some of the best I've ever seen in any video game ever, it's incredible, absolutely incredible.
But the water pack is so very stupid...
Just... Beat... Sunshine...
Can finally rest.
Oh, and 88. First of all, shut up about the water pack :P
Second, a gunshot is too good for that girl. She be taken out behind the Goodwill she bought her outfit at, and beaten to death with a large hairbrush. Period.
Too early to tell. At this time, I'd have to go with Mario 64 just for what it brought to the table in the grand scheme of things.
I actually regretted spending the extra $10 on importing Sunshine. This choice is easy.
I too regret importing SMS a little. Not so much because I don't think that it was worth having a month in advance but I think it ruined the effect a little. A big part of Nintendo universes is having being drawn into every detail of the well crafted worlds. Not being able to read the text of the villigers and mission objectives (even though 95% of the time you could vigure it out by the fly-by video) dampened the Nintendo magic ever so slightly. Amazing game though.Quote:

So far, Mario Sunshine has already shown to me that it's superior to Mario 64. Mario 64 had that WOW! factor of course because there were no other 3D games like it at the time. But Mario Sunshine takes that formula, adds cool boss fights (the fights so far give me that same feeling that the boss fights in Yoshi's Island gave me), gigantic worlds and a nice setting (I like the island setting a lot more than the bland castle/portrait theme in Mario 64).
