Mario 64 has taken the lead!
Whooooo!
For now...
*plots*
Mario 64 was a fun and refined 3D platformer (and nothing more). I liked the game and had alot of fun with it. Sunshine is a poorly paced slow tedious mess and simple a chore to play. It's mediocre at best. 64 wins just for sheer playability. Sunshine is entirely too slow and unfun.
Hax0r!
There's a lot to be said about originality when it comes to how great a game is. I'm not saying that SMS wasn't original, but it didn't single-handedly redefine what it is to make a 3ds platformer. It took the formula for 64 and improved upon it. In retrospect, SMS is better as far as overall quality, but initially 64 wowed me a lot more. Tragic Hero might be right in saying that by importing I was deprived of some of the magic but I still think 64 was more amazing upon first playing it. Plus, I'm a fan of snow levels.
B-K isn't any more of a "scavenger hunt" than either Mario game. Although other Rare titles (especially DK64) did take the concept to an extreme. Still, I don't understand why Rare's platformers get written off as "collectathons" but not EAD's.
The only real problem I have with SMS vs. 64 is the difficulty. 64 had its tough spots, no doubt. But Sunshine's tough spots are of the controller-throwing variety.
The only times I end SMS sessions is when I have died or slipped up for the 1,000,000th time in certain areas.
And thank God for those difficult areas or I'd never stop playing to eat/shower/sleep/work/etc. :DQuote:

By the way, what the heck is the point of "lives" anymore in a Mario game? You die, you get kicked back out to the hub. You die with no lives, you get to continue and get kicked back out the the hub. There is absolutly no real consequence for running out of lives! I guess it is in there for historic reasons.
Probably because EAD's are actually enough fun that I don't mind, whereas they come off as a tedious chore in most Rare games. It's like the two versions of Silhouette Mirage; they're both the exact same game, with the exact same mechanics, but due to one requiring you collect more cash and giving you an ammo meter it becomes a tedious chore. Small tweaks can make all the difference in the world... (Although Rare N64* games tend to need more then small tweaks.)Quote:

Also, what is up with people complaining about the difficulty? It's not a hard game at all...
*I specified Rare's N64 games because I got a chance to briefly try out the StarFox demo when I bought Sunshine, and I'm at least loving the design work, which is awesome! I didn't get a chance to try out any battles, but it looks like Rare might actually make another game besides Battletoads worth playing.
