I look at the area behind the door, and take my shoes off if there are a good number of shoes there. In my house, I try to, but I often forget.

I wait to see what the person who lives there does. Then I follow suit. It's no big deal, though - usually you can just ask them if they prefer you taking off your shoes or not.
Depends on person, if they ask I will, if there house is clean. I might asked them, but if there house is dirty nope, or they say no, then no.
I ask People to remove their shoes before entering my apartment I don't want filth tracked all in my place. It's a real bitch when the person says "No" but hey what can you do?
i had some family here last week and every time they got to the front door they were takin' thier shoes off an' i was like "what y'all doin'?". my lil cousin even asked me why i had my shoes on....i just said because. but if i go to a friends house and they ask me to take off my shoes i have no problem with it.
i always ask if it's my first time there or if they ask or tell me before hand. at my house it doesn't matter.
I voted Doesn't Matter To Me. No one has to take their shoes off when they come over, unless their shoes are obscenely dirty (IE: Mud...). At someone elses house, I wait to see what they do.
However, if you want to sit on my bed, I'll kill you if you have your shoes on...
Yeah, out of respect. Feels more comfortable too.

what he said.
At my house, you take off your shoes because if you track dirt in the house you have to deal with the wrath of my mother. Growing up in this ultra clean environment, I ususally take of my shoes at others people's houses to avoid dirtying their floors. Unless of course nobody else takes off their shoes, then I don't because I don't want to be the odd one, but I still feel like it's wrong.
