Actually, I haven't played the Game Gear one, but I can't imagine it being very good.
There's a game called Run Saber, for the Super Nintendo. Many reviewers called it a better playing game of Strider, than the lame sequel.

I used to own Run Saber on SNES. It's basically a pastel-coloured Strider with Mode 7 effects and half the fun. Not a bad game by any means but it's nowhere near Strider-quality.
I dunno, Run Saber was a pretty awesome playing game, it was just dead easy. Up there with Power Blade in the "finished it the first time I played it" category. But I'd put it up there with most anything else in the category from that era.
Strider Returns was simply AMAZING. It was amazing how U.S. Gold could butcher Strider. Or whoever the hell handled it...
Triangle jump difficulties eh? I didn't even have an instruction manual. I just meandered about until I found shit. This took up a whole, um... year.
By the way, this is the first game that ever freaked me out. SPOILERS (sort of, but not really- just covering my ass)
At the end where whoever it was said, "We will dance on your grave" out of nowhere, and then, when he killed you, literally jumped all over you... well... fuck! I just put the controller down for almost a full month.
I was 10; this was during a time in my life where a game glitching caused goosebumps to line my back.
I loved that game.
A few things about Strider Returns:
-I actually liked the way Strider flies around the core in this one. It looks worse overall, but it's much easier staying close and attacking the damn thing.
-Why waste memory on the voices???
-I swear the picture of Strider's girlfriend is revealing a nipple (yes, I am perv).

Yeah, the gravity core is one of the cheapest parts of the first Strider - you pretty much have to have an ourobouros or two, or you will take a hit.
That doesn't save Strider Returns from being total Eurojunk, though.
