My grandfather always recounts how his father would beat him and his brothers' asses if they ever hit his sisters. When they asked why they weren't allowed to hit their sisters my great grandfather told them: "So you don't hit your wives when you're older." Duh. And this was way back in the 1920s. Hitting.Women.Not.Cool.Ever.
Plenty of people have these reflexes, a few of my friends do. One's a punker who's also been into martial arts for many years and is (on a base level) quite paranoid. He's almost hit me a few times just because I've startled him while coming up from behind when he didn't know I was there. He's accidently hit a few people off and on (he's a great guy, he isn't doing it on purpose), and most of it's due to his paranoia. A lot of it he doesn't know he's doing until he's already started it simply because his muscles are trained to react fast due to his training.Quote:

When surprised, many people lash out with the first reaction that springs to their subconcious. Whether that's utter a slight scream, recoil, hit back, dodge, or what have you.
Heck, when I was in the doctor's office once they were scraping the back of my throat with a tongue depressor for a sample and told me, "Stop doing that." I couldn't figure out what they talking about, and realized I had subconciously grabbed the doctor's wrist with my hand and was trying to pull it out. Had no clue I was doing it.
If his first reaction is to hit people, he's been trained VERY badly.

If his first reaction BEFORE he was extensively trained in the martial arts was to hit people, then fine. But if he's been into the martial arts for years, and that's still his reaction, he's been trained badly. I'm sorry he's had a hard life, but that doesn't have any reflection on his trainers.

For the record, I wouldn't call his training extensive, he doesn't excel in any area but has been doing it for a few years. He's learned under two masters, one which was a formal school (which was quite some ago and is no longer open) and the other is a former teacher who teaches him in his spare time.
He's a pretty aggresive person, which shows in his reactions and love of weapons and guns. Funnily enough, he's actually a really nice guy.
