Anyone have any good recommendations on where I can track down a joystick for the Dreamcast. I finally realized I'll never be good at shooters with a standard gamepad and that it's time to just break down and get a joystick. Sudden realization #2- I'm an idiot who should have figured this one out sooner.
Even last Christmas wouldn't have been too late to track one down. -sigh-

Well if you are looking for any DC arcade stick, then you can get them at several places. There's a EB by me that has a new Topmax for $10 and Gamestop gets used sticks and sells them $20 and the brand doesn't matter. My lastest DC arcade stick purchase was probably 2 weeks ago for the Interact Alloy Stick at EB for $20. I was very happy considering I bought my other one new for $60.

Hijack question: I'm currently trying to become acclimated to using a stick for fighting games, and have the DC arcade stick. Problem is, I'm having an insanely hard time (ten times as hard as every other move) doing a Shoryuken motion. Is this simply my problem (I'm almost positive I'm doing the motion perfectly most of the time) or does the DC stick have a problem here?
Is there is a better arcade stick on either the DC or PS2 (I have a PS-to-DC convertor I got for a DDR pad)?

I agree. Agetec makes the best DC sticks around. The Topmax is flimsy, but hey, it's only $10 so you get what you pay for. The Interact Sticks are nice, but not as good as the Agetec. They are just pretty.Quote:

Pacrappa and Bbobb: Does either of your stores have any Agetec sticks for sale? I've seen plenty of people (and now Korly as well :) ) talk about them, but can't seem to find them for sale online at any stores I know I can trust.
I work at EB, and there's a Gamestop just a few storefronts away. Not an arcade stick to be found.

AgeTec/ASCII Stick rules over all others, I just scored a sealed one at the local GameStop for $20, so I'm happy, wouldn't mind having 2 or 3 more though.
I have a couple arcade sticks and they all make clicking noices. Some are louder then others (one sounds like you're popping bubble wrap as it moves, whereas my DC stick is very soft), but I kind of like it. Like the NGPC.Quote:

i have a DC-Saturn converter with a Saturn ASCII stick...
it's fantastic... although i wish i had a jap-style stick that you don't have to move as far to do moves...
i saw a used Agetec stick at Gamestop a few weeks ago for 20 bucks, i was thinking about buying it

I can't stand the clicking on my Neo Pocket either...
My arcade sticks need to be just like in an arcade cabinet. No clicking and super smooth 360 degree rotation is an absolute must.
The TRU near me has brand new Agetec sticks for sale. I could take a look to see if they still have them for you.
Another recommendation for Agetec sticks. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is how outstanding the buttons are. They have a very short throw making them very responsive. Much better than the Ascii, Hori Fighting, Sega Virtua I and II, or Capcom sticks. The Agetecs are very similar to the PSX sticks from Namco, but with 2 advantages. First they have a plastic rather than painted playing surface (important for sweaty palms). Second is a bottom plate that is coated to prevent oxidation.
But then I really like clicky microswitch based sticks with the ones Capcom used for their SNES/Genny sticks being my favorite. Strangely, my USA designed C&L Controls Championship Joytick also has a somewhat clicky (bat not ball) stick.
BTW I also bought my last two Agetecs at Gamestop for $20 each.
I'd love to find a source for these, outside of the (JP?) Sega ones listed....

Just make sure you nail the "down" motion on the Shoryuken. They used to be a pain in the ass for me too, until I figured the Agetec wanted me to be a bit more precise. I was used to doing a stick roll from my local arcade machines, so the motion I was tapping was forward, down-forward, down, down-forward, button push. The Agetec, in every experience I've had, want you to do a forward, down, down-forward motion. It's a bitch until you get your rythm, but I believe in you Mech, I believe!Quote:

Maybe the person who had it before you liked to play MVC on easy mode... and scrub it up.
Um... arcade sticks are clicky. Its just so loud in there that you can\'t hear them. Unless all the cabs in your arcade have optical sticks. Which is unlikley.Quote:

I hate non-click sticks for one reason: it is SO much easier to get a feel for each of the eight directions using a click stick. D, (BOOM-click), DF (CLICK!), F (Ah... click!)... Satisfaction.

Love the Agetec. I think I need another eventually, however. My cable is iffy and the stick has seen better days.
Is there any way to tighten up a loose stick?
Another thing that I did when I was first getting used to the Shoryuken motion when I got my Neo Geo was that you need to stop your motion when you hit Down-Forward. When I use a pad, I do a sweep of Forward-Down-Forward. On the stick, that wouldn't work, you have to press the button after you are in the Down-Forward position.Quote:

Chances are, I'm simply not doing the motion properly since I'm not used to the stick. I realized I was doing this for half-circles, where I was always stopping a direction too soon. I'm actually better at half-circles on a stick then I am on quarter-circles, funnily enough, but I can't do either at a high speed (combos are damn near out of the question). I also have a hard time doing double-motions for Supers. Practice, practice, practice.
Something that dawned on me yesterday while trying to imagine the motion was the old SF and SF-style guides that had a "Z" motion for the Shoryuken. Since I almost never used a stick, I couldn't ever figure out why they had a "Z" but simply got used to it standing for that movement. Now, holding the stick in my hand and visualizing it, I realize why: because it's exactly a "Z" motion! I feel stupid as hell.

I had a pair of the Agetec sticks too.
Got rid of them in favor of the Ascii FT pads.
I hate using sticks unless they're attached to a cabinet.
Okay the agetec sticks are...drum roll please $50.00 each at TRU. They still have 3 of them.

Actually, I picked up a stick today, Promax or something like it. Ran all of $10, though it's hardly the greatest stick I've ever seen. Promax Enforcer? Something like that. The stick has a bit much play and the buttons are stiff, but I'm guessing the buttons will clean up nicely with play.
Let me think a bit on the Ascii sticks. If someone else grabs them first, oh well. $50 is a bit more than I think I have right now, no matter how much I want a good quality stick. $60 for Ikaruga plus $7.61 s&h plus $15 for a DC-X plus $10 for a cheap stick is a lot of money. That's $92! Eep!

I thought it was steep too, considering thats what I paid for one of them like 2 or 3 years ago.
Side question: How's the DC Panther Pad? It's the one with the trackball and is supposedly good for FPS games. My local EB has one new pretty cheap and I'm thinking of getting it.

I've never used a Panther for the DC (or played any FPS on it other than Outtrigger - those belong on the PC IMO) but I used the original Panther on the PC back when Unreal was first released. It took a while to get used to the thing, but it was really quite accurate and flexable. Short of a mouse and keyboard the only thing I'd ever play a FPS on (assuming it wasn't designed from the beginning for a pad). Should also be nice for flight stuff, what with all the triggers and hat switches....
