Damn that N64 controller !! or My Sin & Punishment adventure

Well, As most of you know, I was able to get S&P from Seven Force a week and, and also got N64 import coverter from NCSX, which finally arrived last Friday.

I rushed to open the package, graped the plug-in converter and S&P cart, and ran to my game room, where my N64 was patiently awaiting this moment. I turned the game on, and prepared to dive into shooting goodness of S&P

Well, The game looks good of N64 game. Eventhough character and enemy models still blocky as hell, they look pretty cool, and screen is always full of awesome exlosions, lots of enemies to shoot, and some huge bosses to tackle. Shooting action is non stop, and I would have enjoyed it more, if I didnt had a problem with the "infamous" N64 controller.

Its been praised around these parts alot, but I still think its a badly designed pad. Not comfortable to hold, or use. Its very cumbersome to try controlling your character target cursor with analog stick, and move left to right with d-pad, because of the position of d-pad on the controller. Also you have to Jump by using shoulder button, which again sometimes is hard to reach, in the heat of the battle because you also trying to aim with Analog, and triangular shape of pad doesnt help :(

It would worked better if N64 pad had 2 analog sticks, simular to PS2 Dual Shock, or Xbox controller, that way, atlest you would have been able to aim and and dodge without strain on your fingers.

I will still enjoy the game no matter the control problems, but those do affect my performance in the game. I'm currently stuck in the middle of level 2, where right after movin up on the lifting platform, you have to fight Mini Boss with a whip. No matter what I do, he constanly kicks my ass. I try dodge his whip attacks, but they still do huge damage, and again, since I'm having said controller problems, its hard for me to shoot and dodge at the same tim :(

Anyone have strategies on how to get through this guy?

I feel your pain, Despair. That is easily Nintendo's worst controller ever. Layout aside, the analog stick just feels cheap. I mean, I guess it did user in the analog revolution and all, but that doesn't get it off the hook for being a lousy pad. :p

I wish I could help, but I got bored of the game before I could get that far.

I personally think the N64 controller is the most comfortable analog controller (though maybe I need to play more of the GC... problem is finding something to play on it...). But that's the problem with all analog controllers. While I like the N64 controller, others find it uncomfortable. And while I hate the Dual Shocks and DC controllers, others find it comfortable.

Despair: Keep the default control scheme of S&P. The more you play it, the more you will realize that the control scheme is golden. I agree it is a bit cumbersome at first. But you'll reach a point where it's not only intuitive... but you'll want it no other way.

As for that enemy, that part is easy as heck.... but really, if you're just straight up shooting, you're missing a huge part of the game. You will realize that using the sword is key to a lot of parts, and although isn't crucial for that enemy, it certainly helps.
Remember: Sword damage >>>>>>>> bullet damage. And I hope you're not using the lock-on gun...

Mfkzt: Play on. The first stage is a joke and is really not fun at all... ditto for Bangaioh, where the game doesnt' really start until like level 7. But once you go through a couple of levels, S&P is absolutely brilliant... one of the best games of all time.

I too had problems with the controller when I first played S&P. It was the first N64 game I owned, on top on that.

Give it a couple of hours. It'll become second nature.

You'll be slashing back rockets in no time.

Which one is lock on gun? Blue or Red? I was using Red all the time.

ANd yes, Sword damage is greater, but again with akward control layout it hard for me to aim, attack, and dodge at the same time, and I either end up aiming too high and shoot at nothing, missing that Boss, or I shoot at him, but have no time for dodg, and take huge damage from his whip, and other shots that those bat like creatures firing from background.

Blue is lock on.

Trust me when I say there's nothing better than a few hours of practice. Everything will fall into place.


By the way, I love the first level. Gotta love hitting the swirls of moths just right...

Once you start feeling more confident with the controller, or even now, go and post your scores on the score board!! We could really use some more people! Same with everyone else!!!

Despair: I feel your pain re: the N64 controller. S&P was the first N64 game I ever owned, and I had a lot of trouble getting used to the clunky N64 controller.

Here's my recommendation: grasp the middle of the controller with your left hand, so you've got the trigger and analog stick under your left index and thumb, and grasp the right side of the controller with your right hand with your right thumb on the movement buttons. That way, with a little practice, you can jump, aim, shoot, and manuever at the same time.

Re: the whip boss, well-timed sword attacks and careful dodges are key. You might also try using lock-on shot (use the B button to toggle between standard and lock-on shot) to wear him down before time runs out.

??????? If you're not already doing what Sleeve is telling you to, with regards to the controller, then you don't know how to hold it?

I'm not exactly sure what your problem with Sin & Punishment is, because the only time I've played is 2-player with my brother where he moved the characters and I aimed and shoot. :)

Do you have to use both the d-pad and the analog pad normally? Eeek.. that sounds bad. As for other N64 games that require either the D-pad or Analog stick, the N64 control pad is perfect. I really couldn't imagine playing N64 games any other way.

I still wished the Z-trigger was under the controller on the GC and not near the R-button but things could be worse. :p

Hey Despair, are you saying you're using the Dpad to move left and right? Does that put your right hand on the analog? Sleeve boy was absolutely right about the left hand on the analog and the right hand on the C buttons. It becomes second nature after a short while. Don't forget double taps left or right for a quick roll and you also have a double jump. Aim the sights at the boss and use the sword to smack the rockets back his way.

Ohhh... now that i reread Despair's post, you guys are right... he IS holding the darn controller wrong...

I was holding it right. It gets time to get used to it a little, but still it very uncomfortable. But the game itself is awesome. Flying level where you battle planes and ships was unbelivable and fun. I got to the part where you have to stop the giant bullet that was fired at Saki, but I kept dying, since I never have enough time to destroy it, nor the aiming cursor is very responsive on following the target. Any ideas on that part??

Also that level where you have to chase thet Insect like monster that rolling the ball with your friend inside, was very tough. Again, because of control layout. After dying for like 6 times, me and DJ teamed up, I controlled aiming shooting and jumping, and he was strafing, and that way we made it through :)

The quote above makes me believe you're not holding the controller correctly. You should be using the yellow arrow buttons to move left and right. Not the d-pad at all.

Again, if that's what you're wishing, you're playing it wrong...
See, what you're asking for is one hand to control movement, one hand to control cursor. Which is very reasonable. But as it is, no wonder you have a hard time jumping, and very difficult access to the lockon/non-lockon.

With the default control scheme, holding the controller the right way, your left hand is moving the cursor and shooting. Your right hand has immediate access to jumping, moving left/right, strafing, and the target-switching.

I don't know... if you are holding it the right way, I'm not sure how you can really have these many problems if you've gone so far. The experience is intense once it becomes intuitive and you're aiming when you want and making your character do what you want.

Tip: When you use lockon, it's a lot slower than the normal cursor. That's why you should use the red cursor as much as possible (or simply throughout the entire game), because it does far more damage in the same time period.

Tip: For that boss, use red cursor entire way and remember for this and nearly every boss: The Sword is the Key to the Game.

It's best to become accustomed to the non-lock-on aiming cursor (red), as it deals out three times as much damage. There is only one boss in the game I have trouble with and need to use the lock-on, and that's the final form of the train boss. All the high-speed bouncing and the tons of balls to dodge requires me to focus on living and slap the lock-on on the bouncy ball.

The whip boss I also found pretty easy, I don't even really notice him. I just run back and forth shooting and jumping.

What you also might to do (this'll build up a trigger finger if you don't have one) is to never hold down the trigger, but always tap it rapidly. That way if things get close enough you'll automatically slash them without having to pay too much attention, and will keep shooting otherwise.

Part of aiming, especially later on, is simply learning enemy patterns. The slow cursor dictates that you need to know how certain things will happen and the order enemies move in so as to do well.

This game is perfect for the N64 controller. You do know that if you decide to move your character with the d-pad, you do that with your left hand, right?

Glad to see your enjoying the game. If the pad is bothering you that much, I'm sure you can find a Dual Shock converter.

i'm with you despair - the N64 controler is very poor - what i did (just for S and P) is buy the some what funny looking double hinged controler (as opposed to normal 3 hinged) - the analog stick is now next to the d-pad (like a PS1/2 controler) and the other keys remain the same on the right hand side - i bet you can find one of these for $5 at any used game store - i wouldnt play S and P without it - hope this helps -------------- joe zovko

I had to stop playing the damn game due to my hatred for the control, and my like for glass on my TV...

I still don't understand all the N64 controller hate. Do you not know how to hold the damn thing? What difference does it make if it has 10 prongs - you only hold 2 (and use the buttons on 2) at any given time.

I don't care about the controller. It's the way they put the controls into the game that I hate... (Although, those fucking C buttons are about the worst thing ever thought of)

Okay. Name a better way to incorporate aiming and moving into one simultaneous control scheme. This isn't GoldenEye - aiming and moving with one stick would just get you killed - often. If you don't like the C buttons, use the d-pad. The N64 controller is the only one that lets you use both simultaneously. I wish every controller was designed with that in mind.

Yeah, I'm with Burg on this. The controls work beautifully and are setup great, I'm not sure how one could hate that. Attacking is handled with one hand, movement and jumping with the other, and all the controls can be used at once.

Epsilon-2: I think I know the one you're talking of, and it always looked to me like the left side was too big to hold properly (as opposed to the N64's prongs that are nice to hold). How does the pad feel in your hands?

Well, I tried to use C-buttons to move, but I just cant get used to that, so I stick with D-pad :) My left hand is trained on Dpad much more, than my right on someting like thosr Cbuttons. At least that works out for me better. I will practice more on Fast Dodge, and better timing of Sword attacks. When you battle with Brad on the Carrier, and have swords locked, you need to tap trigger button fast, otherwise he gains advantage, and will slash you with his sword.

Burg, The game is excellent. Awesome mix of action, challenging boss fights, for which you have to use strategy(I love this part). It was pretty much the ONLY game I bought my N64 for, and I'm glad it didnt dissapoint. The only thing that kinda bugs me,(other then controller), its some of character voices. THey sound like kindergarden kids(girls mostly). :)

Another question, When battling the Boss in lava, after Saki changes for the first time, in the second form, Boss does lava dive, and its like a tidal wave that damages you alot. Is there any valid way to avoid it, or its just about timing it right. Because, I dashed to the right edge of the screen, and did double high jump, and was able to dodge it, but previous times, it didnt work that well.

Right but is that before you gave the C-buttons a chance? Obviously most of us are more "trained" with a Dpad on left hand, but considering the accuracy needed for the game, you really need to have your left hand on the analog cursor.

I think more than anything else you need to practice with your left hand on analog, and your right hand controlling your character. Because after an hour or two, you'll think of the scheme is brilliant.

Like I said, this setup is by far the best because you have access to the jump button easier, and can switch between lockon and off easily because it's readily accessable.

Seriously.. do not even consider the D-pad as an option. The game will work out much better for you.

Like you said, the double jump is the only way to avoid it. Just strafing doesn't work. You just have to time your double jump well.

That's probably the only stage I do well at. I can do the lava stage maybe w/o even getting hit once ^^;

Despair - S&P is well worth the price of itself, a N64, and anything needed for conversion/modification.

About the voices - Yeah, they kinda suck, but at least they're in English. Also keep in mind that most of the characters *are* females, and the males are pretty effeminate. I didn't realize Saki was a male until far later in the game. I actually enjoy the bad voice acting - it makes the game seem more like interactive polygonal anime (is that an oxymoron?) to me.

About the lava waves - Like Tsu said, double jumping is the key, though it's tough to time. I usually just take my licks there and try to make it up offensively or on the other segments.

My only problem with the N64 controller is that it was designed for smaller hands. I had to hold it at a weird angle to be able to play anything, which would cause a lot of discomfort after a while. Those yellow buttons made it really easy to adjust the camera in platformers and were perfect movement keys in first-person shooters though.

I thought Saki was a girl too :) Until he spoke with guy voice :p

Yes, Its true that English voices are better than nothing, but still it very strange to see action game, with darker themes, and characters speaking with voices of first graders :)

S&P's voices are among the most painful I have heard in a game, especially the ultra-whiny "Game Over".

Yeah, they're some weeny 14-year-olds. :p I think I'm the only person who knew Saki was male right off.

Regarding lava waves: The perspective is a bit screwy here, if you're getting hit but double-jumping them you're probably doing it too soon. You'll get a feel for them, but you have to wait for them to be a bit closer then it looks like they should be.

- about the fit of the "2 pronged" N64 controler - i have large hands so the left side fits quite OK (but you are right - i can see how some folks would say its too fat) - i also used the DreamCast controlers that almost every one hated made by Performance - the real fat ones - but like i said - i have big hands so they were perfect - i do agre - for most games the N64 controler is quite OK - but just for some reason i use the 2 prong controler with SandP only -------- joe zovko

Deflecting Missles with your sword is awesome trick. It was really cool when on Carrier level you could send those huge missiles back at the missile launchers down on the ships beneath you. Or how you needed the sword to fight that Mech on the side, before Saki got transformed. I first tried to shoot it, but it didnt do any damage, so I used the sword, and WOAH, it hit it hard.

Burgundy, I do watch alot of Anime :), it just some voices suit certain characters and games better than others. Not a biggie though, and definately not something that will spoil my enjoyment of this game :P

It also cool, how you gain credits, for collecting bonus points, very simular to the RS.

I hate the N64 controller and all, but S&P controlled fine once you developed the ambidexterity for it. I can't think of a thing I would change. Also, as for the lava waves, you just gotta jump before it crashes down. You can wait til right before it hits,a nd even jump through it as long as your off the ground durning the crash

Welp, I should really just accept what you say and move on... but I'm still convinced you're having control problems because you're not willing to give their layout a try (and those who do say it becomes intuitive, like what everyone's saying in this thread...). So I'll just mention it this one last time.

But I'm guessing you're right-handed, and even if you're not, gamepads are usually designed so that precise movements go on your left hand and buttons (quick button presses, knowing which button to press at any given time, etc) is delegated to the right hand. This is pretty much every console game, right?

Knowing this, how can you NOT have your left hand on the analog trigger? Considering that aiming the cursor is the primary part of the game, that's the part that requires the precision.

The way you have it set up, your right hand is controlling your character movement. Well... in these types of games, precise character movement is not critical. Yes you do want to move out of the way when things shoot at you. But you can just as easily do that with the C-buttons. Not to mention it's easier to tap the R button to jump than it is the L button (in every game, in every console) just for the fact that your right hand has always been in charge of buttons.

So I can only say, to fully enjoy this game, use the analog trigger to aim, use the C-buttons to move. It IS weird... I don't think any other game is set up like that. But at the same time, this is one of only games where you can move your character in many directions, jumping over obstacles, while shooting enemies at the opposite end. Whereas most of these games link your crosshair movement to your character movement, S&P gives you absolute full control. And you'll quickly adapt to it. Nothing beats the intensity of moving right, seeing a barrage of bullets coming toward you, strafing left, double jumping over a platform, slashing an enemy at the top of the screen, all the while you're widdling down a boss's HP by manually following its movements with your crosshairs. That's when you will realize... the control is perfect.

Well I've done it !!! I beat it few minutes ago :)

It was great game, and finall boss was a cheap bitch. Protect the Earth, Missile Commander style. And DAMN it was nerve breaking :) My hands are still sore from the tension :p

Well, It was great experience, and only took me about 10 continues :), 6 of which were spent on the last Boss. And I ended up with 17 more to go.

It was weird to see New York in ruins, with only Twin Towers still standing, on the day of aniversary of the act that brought those down in real life.

Despair:

Assuming you beat it on default difficulty (Easy), try Normal. The brilliant part about S&P is that, of course it's harder, but not only that, some of the bosses require new ways of beating them. Not entirely a totally different experience, but you may have to go back to the drawing board with some bosses.

And then if you're up to the challenge, try Hard after Normal. There's one boss about 2/3 through which I haven't figured out how to even damage...

Well, How do you select the difficulty? Since all the menues in Japanese I have no idea on where the selection is.

Is it fist menu with lots of choices, or the next one, with only 2 buttons? And if not, what doest that one selects anyway?

True, Harder difficulties gives you more challenge, and I like that in games(one of the best parts in DMC :)). I will definately continue playing it later on,(there are few Boss fights where Bosses either ran away, or I somehow skipped them when I died), but right now I still have bunch of other games like Onimusha 2 and DTR to finish up, and more coming next week.

Difficulty option is on the upper right corner. I wish I had SJIS support at work so I could write it for you. But basically it's like this:

I-ji-(character - character -): easy
Norumaru (character character character character): normal
Ha-do (character - character): hard

Hard only opens up once you beat Normal I believe.

Well, I dont think I spoiled how the game ends :) I just mentioned some parts in the game, and kinda described the Boss fight, but nothing to rally about spoiler wise :p

I don't think anyone uses it besides me and the guys I used to play with at my old college, but there is a control style in Golden Eye like that. I find the game unplayable with default controls. I didn't have any problems playing S&P because I was so used to aiming the analog and moving with the C-buttons.

Well, I eventually got better with default set up, and still cant get used to Cbutton layout, even though I did try :) Doesnt matter, my aiming with RIght hand is better than with my left anyway.

Spoilers, again. I don't think I ever beat the final boss, so I can't talk about the ending, but here's what I think.

Achi is some sort of superior and ultimately unfriendly alien lifeform. She apparently wanted to use the Earth as a war simulation for her species' benefit, and use Saki and Brad as enhanced soldiers. Achi infused first Brad, then Saki with her "blood," giving them their powers, and Brad in turn infused his two female sidekicks. That's why Saki transformed. I believe the creatures (in the New York section, as most of the Japan enemies were from Brad's army) were spawned by Achi (or her civilization) first to test Saki, and then to distract and detain him. New York was some space-time trick pulled by Achi - I get the feeling she can do things we can't even understand. Brad, like I said, was infused by Achi, and then apparently turned on her when he got wind of her true intentions. He is working for the Japanese government when we encounter him. In a sense, he's the good guy!

man, I could've sworn that I read something completely diffrent a while back. I thought that the Ruffians were Bio Engineered to be food for an overpopulated earth, but they evolved & turned dangerous. Saki was a human with paranormal powers that could be passed on through her blood. The part in New York was in an alternate future that involved Achi taking over everything. I'm kinda fuzzy on what happens later on though. Maybe it was in that Gamers Republic that had S&P on the cover. Maybe I'll go find it & see.

Alright, time to clear some stuff up as best I can:

Achi has demonstrated powers beyond normal humans and believes herself as a God. Her power can be passed on to others by transferring her blood, but it doesn't always work right. For some people it has no effect, and for others it can can mutations and transformations.

She passed her blood onto Saki to help him recover when he had been attacked by Ruffians, and that gave him strong powers and inadvertantly transformed him later on when he came into contact with Kachua's true form.

Brad had also been helped by Achi, but because of choosing a different path to combating Ruffians he had become her enemy. He passed his blood onto Kachua (a sort of love interest for Brad) and Leda, which didn't sit well with Leda and mutated him (her?) into a mouse-like creature. Kachua was with Radeon (who might've also partaked of Brad's blood and mutated) and seeing Radeon's death drove her mad and she mutated, taking out most of Tokyo.

When Saki transformed and lost control (after beating the rocket intended to kill him), Achi cut him open and "fused" Saki and Airan. She gave Saki a dream of a possible future in which he still reigned in his transformed state and had wiped out a large portion of the world (it wasn't in Achi's favor to have Saki in that state). Achi knew that if Airan could confront Saki and hurt him in a vunerable area they could drive him back into his human form. It seems Saki could switch between forms freely there (notice he's tranformed in the New York video but is human at the end of the train, and had to be human to have sex with Airan, considering they have a kid), but requires bonding with Airan in real life (when he transforms again at the end).

Achi's real goal is to create a perfect world (the Mimicry Earth), and then transport the people of Earth there to obey her as the God she believes herself to be. She was passing on her blood to create others similar to her to help enforce the world, though none of them worked out.

Background (what I have translated so far on my site, there's still more I haven't worked on):

In the future, the human race has prospered like never before. Peace reigns, and a population explosion comes from such. However, food shortage becomes a major problem and many are left starving. To combat this, a 'New Kind' is created on a huge ranch, Hokkaido, as help with labor and a food source. But the hunting instinct of humans arises in the genetically engineered slaves, and they begin to rebel. The attacking body, Ruffians, fall upon the Touhoku region and cause large-scale riots. Two groups emerge to confront this menace: the 'Armed Volunteer,' the International Public Peace Organization, which seeks to suppress the riots, and the citizens organization, the 'Relief Group,' which hunts the Ruffians and is at odds with 'Armed Volunteer.'

The Relief Group is scattered about Tokyo, and Achi's "Teachings of Morality" are the key idea of their activities. The organization expands by performing a relief effort to show humane acts and loyality to the people, Achi as the head of this comparativly small group. When the organization is roughly divided, Achi leads the 'Hunting Group' and attacks when the Ruffians fight to destroy a food center. Achi becomes a 'Leader' from this, as those who help others and indiscriminately offer protection rise in rank while part of 'Relief Group'. The 'Hunting Group' is composed of boys and girls who demonstrate abnormal physical strength after partaking of Achi, and are trained to be effective in battle. Saki's abilities are an incredible exception, and with the Ruffians being weeded down in size, it's possible for individuals to hunt. 'Armed Volunteers' decide to take shelter, and are lead by a young man and woman. The 'Relief Group' recieves information from a 'Volunteer' escapee knowledgeable in mechanics. They give the escapee refuge and special treatment, and in return they recieve the knowledge of the machine workings of the 'Eye Orchis'. The group breaks apart and becomes scattered amongst Tokyo, but it is becoming harder to secure food. A decision is made to repeat the invasion of the Ruffians capital and to confront the 'Armed Volunteer', so the abandonment of each base begins.
