Released in the early '90s by Data East (?), this 2D fighter is better known for the lawsiuit it spawned rather than for the game itself.

Capcom sued Data East for copyight infringement due to History's close resembelances to Street Fighter II. The courts ruled against Capcom- thankfully setting the precedent that they did not OWN the 2D fighter genere.

History's courtroom victory allowed for a very good SNES version to be released.

As for the game Fighters History- it was good. The designers imitated SF2 quite well. Everything in History is pretty much a slightly weaker version of SF2.

The graphics are decent, and well-drawn. The music is forgettable, though non-irritating. The sound effects and voices are a bit washed out- even in the arcade version.

It plays well- like a SLIGHTLY clunky and underpolished version of SF2. In fact, I would go so far as to say that History plays better than some of SNK's fighters at the time (AOF, FF, FF2).

Lets not forget those 2 STOOPID bosses, Clown and Karnov.

Who remembers this fine and forgotten fighter?

Fighters History wasn't bad but it was just another early '90's fighting game for me that tried to be SF2 but failed.

It was very ironic that Data East got sued considering a few years earlier Data East sued System 3(and lost) because they felt International Karate/World Karate Championship was too similar to Karate Champ. The fact that Data East lost the old case probably helped them win the Fighters History one.

Zero, for the first time, you have dissapointed me. Fighters History--every single Fighters History--sucks. Sucks ass.

Karnov's Revenge...fuck Karnov! And how dare you diss the original Art of Fighting?!? I picked it up on AES this weekend and rediscovered how great it is. Outside of KOF, AOF is probably my favorite SNK fighting series, and AOF OWNS Fighters History. For shame!

FH can easily be filed with the rest of the forgettable fighter clones out there. The fighters worth remembering are the ones that had its own appeal. FH had nothing but bland char designs and a dull fighting engine.

How can I not remember it? I remember it for what is probably the wrong reason...

The voices are so hilarious thanks to how misquotable they are. There's Mizoguchi's "Take a good look at that!" (Tiger bazooka, JAH!) and "Pissoff, Pissoff, Pissoff!" (that flying kick). Ray is supposed to be saying "Big Tornado", but it sounds much more like he's tossing a "Baked Potato".

Fei-Lin's Tourouzan sounds like "Donald Duck!", and her Hakkakusohiken sounds like "Fuck you for leaving". :lol: Lee's voice is just an all around laugh riot, too.

I remember Ultra game Players did a side by side comparison of fighters history and street fighter 2, and the similarities were too damn close for comfort. I think it was one of their 1994 issues.

I remember reading about the lawsuit in an old issue of Gamepro. I believe one of the characters was almost exactly like Sagat (or was it Guile......stupid memory).

Both I think. I remember I used to use their flamboyantly gay counter to Guile. I can't remember his name...he looked like Guile but he threw roses like Vega.
