Lets talk about...MDK2!!!

Hey:

The original MDK was a boring, repetitive mess which is best left in Playstation bargain bins.

But the Dreamcast MDK2 is one of the best games ever made, and I don't see much talk about it on the boards. MDK2 basically took the concept of a 3D action-puzzler and presented it so well that it quickly became one of my all-time favorites.

I've never actually beaten the game, the challenge level is through the roof. I must have spent three hours just staring at my TV trying to figure out that puzzle with Kurt where you have to shoot the lockballs and use them as lifts for your parachute. And I looked forward to playing as Dr. Hawkins every chance I got, he cracked me up and his levels were arguably the best. Max kind of sucks though, his levels reek a little too much of the first MDK.

Anyone else enjoy this brilliant Dreamcast classic?

People keep telling me how great this is, and I still haven't picked it up yet.

It sounds right up my alley, though. How is the DC version compare to the PS2 version?

Definately one of the most frustratingly, obnoxiously, break your fucking controller, hard games in recent times.

As for PS2 to DC differences, they're minimal. The DC version looks better, but the PS2 is for all you girly men, since it had a difficulty setting that let you put it on easy.

Sadly, this game is currently in my pile of shame. I haven't even opened it yet, and I recall buying it last Christmas. Heh, at least I got it for $10 new.

I never expected to like this game.... but then I played the ODCM Demo and loved it. :)

BRILLIANT. One of my top three all-time favorite games.

It's old-beef-jerky tough, but the tradeoff was an incredible sense of accomplishment when you beat that boss or made that next checkpoint. MDK2 made you earn every inch of progress, kicking your ass repeatedly along the way, but when I screwed up (which was often) I never felt cheated. There was always something I missed or forgot to do. I always felt like I had a chance, even when the obstacles seemed insurmountable. It demanded A LOT from you as a player, yet didn't reward you much beyond a pure sense of accomplishment. I've rarely gotten this sensation from a game in recent years, and it took me a year to beat (I had to take a couple months off here and there to save my sanity). I always came back because I wanted to make it my bitch. The way the challenges were designed was genius. The first level was as tough as the final levels of many recent games. You not only had to figure out what to do when, which enemy to take out first, and/or which platform to go to (often all at once), but you had to be quick enough with your thumbs to actually do it (switching between Kurt's sniper scope and third-person on the first level boss, for example).

It was humorous but not obnoxious like the original MDK (the sequel is FAR superior in all respects, IMO). It sports some incredible visuals and control. The voice acting and soundtrack were also perfect for the game's mood. The plot was nothing special, but some of the dialogue was priceless ("Earth, who's your daddy?").

Hard to pick a favorite part, but floating from platform to platform on Kurt's first level was amazing. The sense of space was awesome. Of course there was climbing the Pyramid as Max (forget the elevator!), and defusing the bombs as the Doc. The character switching was extremely well-done....it changed the way you played but still retained the same tone and controls (for the most part).

I thought the PS2 rev had slightly awkward controls (BTW, it was $4.99 at ebworld.com last time I checked) as well as the aforementioned difficulty select, but it's still pretty close to the DC version, which looks and feels better IMO.

My favorite Dreamcast game, which is saying a lot because the DC is hands-down my favorite console. It's a true 3D classic, perfectly mixing twitch and strategy elements with fantastic visuals, immersing you in a quirky alien landscape.

MDK2 is not even in the same league as part 1. I didn't play the PS version of MDK, but the PC version is amazing. Maybe the PS version sucked (which I wouldn't doubt since it was a port), but there's no comparison between the two games. You can tell part 2 was done by a different team.
