I bet with that thing you can play the Greatest Games Ever Made!
Truly, you are part of the inner circle.
Aaaaand how. Wood grain is a bit silly. Thats what makes it great. Also, it can look great. If my consoles looked as spiffy as my little cedar humidor, I would display them rather than hide them away in the dark recesses of my entertainment center. I've also been a huge fan of brushed aluminium. I also just like saying Aluminium.

It does kinda look silly.
In Connecticut we have a plce called Bernie's and they still sell "console" TV's. All they do is take a RCA 27-32 and construct a tight wood grain cabinet around it and then they mark it up about 500 bucks. But, the old people just eat them up...
You can't have an arcade machine in your living room, because your parents wouldn't let you :( :( :(Quote:

Everyone: Don't mind "Pollywaggles", he's from London. So basically he's angry that we can all sit around and talk about our "amazing" and "wonderfull" videogames while hes out in the snow standing in the "bread line"...
While the Atari 2600 was one ugly mother - if you've ever seen some Hi-end hi fi systems you'll see how damn posh they look.
For example look at Redwood and Castle products - these are truly the dogs.
The aesthetics of consoles does stick them in a 'we're too technological for you grandad' niche. Why do you reckon they like their TVs with wooden veneer? Because it's 'warmer' and less dare I say it? 'elitest'.
I'm not sure if it was even that.
Back in the day, it was just the "cool thing" to have wood (simulated or otherwise) on stuff.
Cars
Electronic equipment
Furniture
Clothing (shoes)
Home treatments (freaking wood paneling is ugly as hell!)
This touches upon a post I was thinking about making... How many of you have customized systems? What colors do you think would best fit each system?
The only one I've customized is my DC, I put a clear casing on it... I love how the whole front gets all lit up when it's on. I'd like to customize it further... a clear-ish orange CD door would be nice, and if I had any skill with electronics, having more lights in the console would look AWESOME. :D
Personally, though, I'd like have all my systems unique from one another. Here's what I'd think would best suit each system:
NES: clear red casing on top portion, solid dark red/burgundy on bottom portion. Keep the black strip leading to the controller ports.
SNES: Silver brushed metal.
Genny: On topic here, I think wood-grain would look good with the Genesis 2... and the accompanying Sega-CD, too.
PSX: Black-and-White in a kinda postmodern pattern.
Saturn: Hmmmm... I dunno. A light blue would be cool.
N64: I've got the Pikachu one, that's about as unique as a system can come. Despite the hit to masculinity, I love it.
DC: See earlier in the post.
Xbox: That transparent black one that was released in Japan was sweet, or maybe the transparent green that's on the dev kit Xboxes.
Other systems I don't have:
PS2: I liked the yellow or white one.
Cube: A white one would be cool, to go with my GBA. But purple is good.
OT: I would LOVE if Nintendo made an "NES" style GC like those pics of the customized/photoshopped one that was floating around a while ago.
