Housecleaning!

I have evidently missed some drama around here. Let's see, the Fight Club fiasco was several months ago, right? Then there was some cross-dressing/cross-posting controversy involving someone who was actually a decent poster. After that, I kind of lost track. I realize I am an admin, but I haven't looked at the majority of topics here. This is a pivotal year for me, and I have been taking care of business in my personal life as never before.

But now that I have started posting more, I notice a lot of people complaining about TNL. Oftentimes, they take shots in a "you know what I'm talking about" fashion. Like this site has major problems and everyone knows what they are.

I want more than a "TNL? Pfft!" Tell me what sucks about this community. I have been reading threads and I get annoyed by some things on here. But the interesting thing is, the kinds of exchanges that make want to lock a thread are more often than not the same types of exchanges that dominate other boards.

Show me what sucks. Criticize me, criticize bahn, whatever.

So far, some people have told me that there are too many frivolous topics and too many of the same topics. What else? Why has DacaZ left and why do others like Orochi threaten to leave?

I only typed it in really large letters to be kind of funny. He wasn't amused...

I just don't like his way of doing things too much. I know I'm not in charge, and I'm a guest, but he just comes off as faschist to me.

As for complaints, I really don't have any. I didn't like that certain members were singled out and constantly made fun of or attacked, but I never really bothered to complain since I wasn't the one being attacked- they don't mess wit a pimp. ;) The whole zidane bashing thing got out of hand, but that's history. And yeah, it seems that old thread topics are constantly recycled and there are multiple threads about the same topic, but what can you do about that? Overall, I think things here are fine. There's a lot of cool people here and some interesting discussions pop up on all sorts of topics. There were a few posters that had too much of a hating attitude in general, but even they've toned it down. I think the ones that get all upset about things and leave just take things waaay too seriously. The only suggestion I have currently is that sometime new features aren't really explained to the board properly. I was wondering what the "Member of the Moment" thing was and what the deal was with the Galaga medals and PMed bahn, who directed me to an obscure thread on the Q&A board where someone has asked the same question. I think that, whenever there's some kind of upgrade at all, a post should be made by an admin somewhere announcing it. Just a suggestion, no big deal.

Still, it's cool of you to take such an interest in things. *sniff* Thanks, dude. :)

Phoenix: Bahn is 1/200th of the active posters here. Sure, he is an admin, but I notice that he is never treated as anything but. I don't know the specifics of the situation to which you are referring, so I will look into it, but I know that bahn has made comments as a fellow poster, a fellow gamer, only to have some terrible reaction from people who think he is abusing his authority. If it was a comment he made as a poster, treat it as such. No one seems to have a problem talking to me gamer-to-gamer.

Of course, bahn has a very managerial style, particularly in his writing, but that is another style to deal with. 88mph has a style, Captain Vegetable has a style, Hero has a style. Each of them annoys some segment of the community at some time. Bahn's been snippy with me, too, but I see that as a problem between me and him, not me and TNL.

Bahn is not TNL. Not the TNL boards anyway.

Remember GameGO? Remember the admins there? ECM would make no concessions to people begging for a music board or a high-score board. He locked threads at the slightest provocation. He dealt with dissenting opinions with, "I could easily destroy your pathetic argument, but why bother?" Kodomo (haven't typed that name in a while) had a negative 600(!) post count because of all the posts he deleted. Those were posts that people took the trouble of typing out.

Anyway, no one cared much, because they were having fun talking to each other. I apologize if any of our mods or admins are unfair or unbecoming, but there are methods to deal with it. Have problems with bahn? You can e-mail me. Have problems with me? You can e-mail bahn. Dislike us both? Tell burgundy. No abuse of power by anyone here will be tolerated. We have dealt with this issue before and it resolved itself immediately.

Anyway, don't think I am being an apologist or trying to squirm out of criticism. I hear what you are saying and I will use all comments to make this place better, since all the raw materials are here. Maybe we have enough resources (intelligent posters, fair mods), but we have to use them correctly to succeed.

I certainly don't hate bahn, I just dislike his admin style. No problem with him as a poster.

That's really the only criticism I have, except, bring back Fight Club. It was SO fun :)

Mods do have option of merging threads, though survival of the fittest often delegates derivative threads to the netherpages before there is a call for merging. If it gets to the point of spamming, of course, that's a different story.

Fight Club? That Brad Pitt movie? Uh, we'll think about it. :P

Personally, I think the Religion threads are TNL at it's worst.
There's other stuff I don't like about this place, but the Religion threads are #1 on the list.

yeah GG! was some interesting times. But i have no problem here with TNL. As for bahn i don't have a problem with him at all, he is a nice guy, at least i think he is. And i am glad you are starting to come back nick. And i try to be a fair mod, i don't think i have had problems with anyone here.

Seriously, though, I really don't see many message boards nowadays where the mods make the apparent effort to improve the place on a regular basis, in addition to actually being fair and listening to people. Nick's right, ECM ran the GG boards like a midget Hitler at times, from the stories I've heard. The TNL boards are a pretty cool place, as far as I'm concerned. Remind me to get some bitches for ya'll sometime. :)

And I gotta agree with phoenix angel wing- bring back Fight Club. That was so gaddamn entertaining. As long as what happens there STAYS there, I don't see any harm. Unless, that is, you think the arguements started in there WON'T be able to stay there...now that I think of it, there was a lot of hate going around at that time. Hmm....

Bahn kicks ass, I've yet to have a problem with ANY staff, and bahn if the only person who gives my duck the respect he deserves.. :)
And about the Sound-Off forum, I don't think anything should really be grounds for deletions witht he exception of spam, it's the forum for *EVERYTHING non-gaming related*
