Sony makes a component cable - it sells for $20 or $25 at Best Buy, maybe $5 more elsewhere. I can't compare it to the Monster cable, but I doubt the Monster cable is 2 or 3 times better. The Sony cable does a great job, at least on my non-HDTV.
I use the Sony brand cables, and they work fine for me, at $20. The main problem with the Monster component cables (besides the fact that they are RIDICULOUSLY overpriced, like all of Monster's products) is that they only send video, not audio. You need to buy an optical audio cable for sound, and you need to have a reciever with an optical audio in. If you have a reciever with the audio in and decide to go with Monster, be prepared to spend around $100 on cables alone.
So if you don't have a receiver with an optical receiver, you can't even use the Monster cables?
That's sheer marketing genius.
Considering that virtually no PS2 software supports pro-scan, you\'d have to be insane to spend that much.
It's possible that Monster makes PS2 component cables that also send audio, but I've never seen them.
And yeah, it's idiotic. The Sony cables are the way to go unless your goal is to spend as much money as possible.
Using an optical cable for audio should sound atleast slightly better (even though there is a lack of realtime DD), since there is practically no resistance in an optical cable. Not really worth the money, though, unless you use the PS2 for DVD's also (which I do not reccomend).
Remember when the first batch of psx's didn't use sony's patented output and they just had regular composite outputs? I wish we had those days back. But I guess that was quite the move by sony to make sure that everyone had to buy special sony or sony liscensed wires. Well, I guess all the companies do that now, anyway.
You can hardly blame Sony for that when the SNES and Genesis did it, too.
Monster does make component wires w/ regular audio jacks. And yes, I am using my PS2 as my main DVD player. I am at college so it is the best I can do for now (one of the reasons I want to go component).
If I wanted to I could use an optical output because my PC accepts that kind of input...I would have to move my speakers over to my tv though, but I can use that if I wanted to.
Probably will just go with the Sony brand if I can find them.
Honestly, if you get the Sony wires you should be fine. Just take care of where you lay the wires. Don't put them parallel to any power cords and distortion will never be a problem.
