supposedly its really good
i havent played it but i think GI and some other mag both gave it really good reviews
GI didn't review it. PLAY gave it a good review. Gamespot and IGN... so-so. Which means it must be great!
ehh i knew it was some mag i read today gave it a good review
I've had a few days with it and I like it. Most of the criticisms center on level design ( which probably could be a little better ) and the fact that this game doesn't add too much to the genre. Who cares, I haven't played Wipeout since the Saturn days ( I plunked it in recently and the graphics don't hold up too well nowadays ) and I've been waiting for a good "futuristic racer" since the DC. Graphically, this game is spot-on. Smooth, 60 fps images with clean textures ( I don't notice any blurring of textures as they move into the distance either ) and minimal aliasing issues. And talk about FAST - the courses whip by with such speed that you're going to feel sick. Slight blur effects are added at higher speeds ( when using turbo ) but this game NEVER slows down - even in multiplayer modes. While I did like the original Wipeout's L/R airbrake setup, QR's Right accelerate / Left brake setup ( original! ) suffices. The three main power-ups are color coded to the buttons, so beginners can pick the game up easily and jump right in. It probably could use some more / better powerups - and my other issue would be that the ship spends alot of time skimming the ground, instead of in the air - but I also haven't reached max turbo level yet so I haven't even hit full speed. In case anyone didn't know - when Sony bought Psygnosis, a bunch of people left and formed "Curly Monsters" - the team that developed Quantum Redshift. There are three people that worked on design, etc. of the first two Wipeouts still with this dev. house ( there was a thread with specifics here not too long ago ) and that's one of the reasons I was willing to give this game a go without reading too many reviews or renting. The other was the video's I downloaded, the water effects and sheer speed were very impressive.
The ability to use custom audio is also a plus, the only thing missing is LAN ( or XBOX Live ) support. Looking forward to other's impressions........
P.S. - This game has convinced me ( especially the level with the loop ) that Sonic Adventure 3 can and should be on the Xbox.
Thanks for the impressions shpere79. Looks like I'll be buying this game sometime :)
Sounds great, I haven't had any hover racing action since XL. I really like doing custom soundtracks, but what was missing from the other racing game I had (PGR) was a good sense of speed. This sounds right down my alley.
Ammadeau, drop some impressions since you said you liked it in the Robotech thread !!
PLEASE *sad eyes* ?????
