I was out of town touring with my band all weekend and I just walked in the door. Sega's new tambourine PS One game was waiting for me. :) It is entirely too late right now for me to give it a go, but I'll let y'all know what it's like tomarrow evening.
I'll be waiting, for I'm not sleepy, and there is no place I'm going to....

I saw a game mentioned somewhere that was labeled as the sequel to Samba de Amigo... is this it?
I saw this game in the arcade when I visited Japan last year. The game is not a sequel to Samba De Amigo, but the premise is very similar. You have six dots on the screen ala SdA and you have to bang the tamborine at that side and height when the blue dots eminating from the center of the screen overlap it. Similar to the mad shake (red dots) of Samba De Amigo, you have to shake your tamborine when the red dots appear.
So basically, it's Samba De Amigo, but with a tamborine.

For the record, the gameplay is like Samba except there's two things you do with the tambourine. If the spheres are blue, you shake it on the beat. If the sphere is red, you slap the tambourine on the beat.
It also has the normal Samba functions like motions and probably posing too.

Actually, no matter how hard I've looked, I haven't seen a team name attached to the title... it's always just "Sega". But I'm pretty certain it's not by Sonic Team, but it's just the same thing (same engine) with Jpop songs and the variation of shaking and slapping.Quote:

Finally got to play some. This game is very Japanese. Much more so than Samba 2000. There is no english to be found anywhere. Translation FAQs will be needed. In fact, I need one right now. :)
OK, impressions. First of all, this game wishes it was on the DC. These are hurtin' visuals. Not that visuals ever matter for a rythm game, but still. The play mechanics are a fun change from Samba, and the change is big enough to justify this game's existance. Right off the bat however, this game seems much easier. The tambourine also seems to be ever so slightly more accurate than the marraccas were. Maybe that's because I only have one to worry about and am able to controll it better myself, but that's what it feels like anyway. I have 2 major issues with the game so far. Issue 1 is that my wrists start to hurt much sooner than when playing Samba. I guess the marraca shaking motion is less stressfull. Issue 2 is that there is no song clip preview. That is a huge problem because the song names are all written in Japanese. To an english reader like me, all of that writing looks the same and I have absolutly no clue what I am selecting or if I have played that song before.
If you like Samba and can read Japanese, this one's for you (although at this point I feel Samba is a much better game). If you like Samba and can't read Japanese, you're going to be a little lost but enjoyment can still be had. If you didn't like Samba, this isn't converting you.

I LOVE THIS GAME!
Ok, so on a random trip to Southern California to visit my girlfriend, I stopped by Arcade Infinity (As usual) to play some IIDX and what have you. They had this game...and it was the greatest thing ever. The cabinent was HUGE! Like, almost touching the ceiling huge! And it was pretty damned wide too. So I was like "Whoa, It's Samba...with a tambourine!" So I watched some people play and I noticed a crap load of awesome songs. Evolution by Ayumi, My Sweet Darling from DM/GF and MO'FUCKING 'LIAR!LIAR!' from DM/GF. So yeah, I blew about 15 bucks on this damned game, and it became my favorite Non-Bemani music game ever (Just ahead of PaRappa, UmJammar and Gitaroo Man).
2-Player mode is funny because you make designs like hearts and stars and other random things.
Too bad it was released on PSOne, because the graphics were pretty damned good since it basically used Samba's engine. I love the boy character, he looks dope!

If Namco\'s Taiko no Tatsujin (the Taiko drum game) comes home, expect to see some songs like Mini Moni Telephone Ring Ring Ring and Souda! Were Alive!-also from Morning Musume/Mini-moni.
I got my copy yesterday and with my arms sore and my hands bruised, I think I've played enough to form an opinion. I've never played Samba, but I'd like to one day. So my impressions are based on Shakatan's own merits.
Gameplay is thus:
Using the Samba engine, players will recognize the hexagonal format of hand positions. Colored spheres emanate from the center to one of those six positions. Now, depending on what color the spheres are, you will either shake the tambourine there, or slap it. This is a lot of the fun, as your brain tries to process not only where to put the tambourine and on what rhythm... but also whether to slap or shake it. Situations can be hairy when there are mixed colors in rapid succession.
In addition to that, there are paths to follow, where you follow the onscreen arrows with your arm movements and shake the tambourine. This is easier said than done, as the speed of the movements can differ wildly.
And that's basically the game right there.
Music:
For me, and I'm pretty sure darn near every Japanese person who bought the game, the music is why they bought the game in the first place. There are 19 songs available from the beginning, and it's nearly every song pop (sub)group Minimoni has ever done. In addition, a few Morning Musume songs were added as well. As far as I can tell, the songs aren't remixed in any way, except for Happy Summer Wedding, which sounds different from the original.
For those of you who do not know the style, I'll describe it as "dorky cute". Morning Musume is a girl-group of 13 members and MiniMoni is the 4 shortest members of MoMu. So if you want to sample the type of songs beforehand, be sure and try them out. If you don't like what you hear, chances are, you won't like what you hear here either.
Extras:
There are other modes in this game, but a few of them are for 2 players only. There is a minigame mode which consists of 3:
1. One is a mascot with insects flying all over. You must slap as many insects as possible w/o hitting the mascot character. Too many slaps, and the game's over.
2. This is a battle tic-tac-toe game. You and your opponent (cpu) are on a 3x3 board and to claim a square, you must slap it 4x. But the opponent can also slap your square. So let's say you slap a square 4x to place your X there. The computer can slap it once and it's no longer an X. But if they slap it 3 more times, it becomes an O for them. So it's dueling for squares.
3. The last game is similar to the first except it uses balloons, where you must slap a variety of balloons within a time limit. One color will drop your score. The other two will raise it.
In addition to minigames, there's also a Minimoni Gallery mode. (As if you couldn't tell this game was made for Minimoni fans.) The pictures in the gallery are unlockable by playing the main game and meeting certain criteria. For example, it may require an A ranking on Normal difficulty, song: "Koi no Dance Site".
Complaints:
I'd say the only one, although it's a biggie, is difficulty. Despite having four difficulties to choose from (Beginner, Easy, Normal, Hard), I was passing and sometimes acing the Hard songs on my 1st or 2nd try. That's not to say they're all easy, as I fail a few of them everytime. But it's not a good thing if I'm making a killing on all Normal-mode songs the first hour or so of play.
I would guess the arcade is more difficult, because the home version has a Minimoni focus (ie for little girls).
I also wouldn't mind if there were more songs either, but 19 isn't horrible. It's just kinda bad because of the lack of difficulty in general.
Overall:
If you're a MoMu or MiniMoni fan, you would definitely like it. The game for me is a total different approach to music games, working on your arms rather than fingers (Bust a Move D&R) or legs (DDR). But if you're a music-game fan, you may be disappointed by the lack of difficulty. And that lack of longevity may be key to whether or not you spend $100+ on the tambourine set. The tambourine itself is pretty accurate, but you have to know the zone in which the sensors can pick it up.
In the future, I'd love to try out Samba de Amigo to compare it's type of gameplay and song difficulty.
As Minimoni. Shakatto Tambourine da pyon! is, it's fun but you can probably master the songs in a week or two.

Samba is much harder. It doesn't get anywhere near as difficult as DDR, but unlike Mini Moni you will actually *gasp* fail a song every now and then! :D Samba also gives me much more of a workout. You really get moving, and you stay moving longer (faster songs, balls on pretty much every beat).Quote:

Sounds awesome. I pretty much passed on Samba thinking that Shakatan would come to the DC as an arcade port. Little did I know it would come to the PSX, with a different focus. I still like Shakatan though. I hope the do a 2nd game to take advantage of the controller.Quote:
