I played the game for a little while a few days ago, it seems like a decked out Harvest Moon game, my question is is it fun enough to buy without the NES games? It's either this or Starfox, and I own most of the NES games in Animal Crossing for my toploader. Is it really just a 15 minutes per day every day game, or is it something you can play for longer and have fun because I hated Seaman, it was more a chore to get in every day than actual pick up and play fun game.
AC is more fun than Seaman, and very different. Also Star Fox Adventures sucks ass alot.
I can see why some people love Animal Crossing but I found it to be half fun, half chore and I think the NES games are better than the game itself.

You can't play it for a long period of time. I typically play for about 10 to 20 minutes.
IMO, to really enjoy Animal Crossing you have to enjoy what boils down to playing house, er "village" in this case. You've been given a huge playset and you can just literally play with it. That's all it is. It's fun in a tranquil, satisfying way. It's not exciting, it's not challenging, it's really not a game at all.
I'm getting the most satisfaction out of slowly but surely decorating my house to be really cool. I'm also planting a crop of palm trees on my village's peninsula, designing t-shirts, and having fun building a bug collection. Sound stupid? Then don't buy AC. Sound cool in a really pointless way? Then you'll probably like it.
If you're the type of gamer who won't play Mario or Pokemon because they're too kiddy, then stay far, far away from Animal Crossing.
Sure you can play it for extended periods - I played it for six hours straight on Saturday alone.
All depends on personal taste, really.

There's like 3 other threads that talk about how wonderful AC is. Most of the praise is for the game itself, not the NES games, although the difference between playing those NES games through an output better than the toploader's disastrous RF out is really too much for words. Those who don't like AC all that much generally haven't had much time to put into it.
I'm the biggest Rare fanboy here, but I'd recommend AC without hesitation.
Frog - I'm just wondering how you've come to the conclusion that SFA sucks, considering it hasn't been released yet, and all.
I never understood why people got so bent out of shape about the video quality of the top loader in the first place, it's only 8 bit graphics. Trying to max out the graphical quality seems like trying to polish a turd to me.
The last game I bought was Turok for Cube, so my ass kicking fix is pretty taken care of (beat it today btw, ending is pretty abrupt). I loved the Harvest Moon games, my only fear with Animal Crossing is that it will wind up like Seaman, where after the 10 minutes per day there won't be anything left to do

i got the e-reader and i cant figure out how to use it with the GC..i swiped the AC card and it says, communication error or something like that..i tried every possible way..anyone know how to do it?
Bandit - You need to DL the AC card reader app from the post office before directly reading a card. Or else you could scan the card and send the code you get to a villager.
Also you need to swipe the card slowly, not fast like you do with say a credit card.

I mean you are doing really dumb stuff, writing letters to a cat named Bob in hopes that he sends a letter back you you with a peice of furniture as a present. But its fun. Its fun to ride a train to friends town and steal all his fruit and sell it for 5X its worth in your town. Its about collectiong things, its the same thrill one gets out of collecting Baseball cards or something. It is in no way for every one. Its a game I know I will play for like an hour a two a day for months. Everyday there is something new to discover, I can't wait till this holiday season rolls around!

If you need TP, just use one of the many fine Gamestop catalogs with overpriced games. They also make for great litter box liners, and they're the perfect gift for the relative who has absolutely no sense of self-worth.
I want to try Animal Crossing because it sounds like an awesome concept. Then again, I'm sure I'll either a) play it a week and never touch it again or b) totally lose all contact with the outside world and start babbling about all AC-related stuff.

I think you're just nuts. I can't stand seeing NES games through an RF connection anymore. I'm glad my old NES still works. The toploader was a great idea, but the lack of composite outs was an idiotic oversight on Nintendo's part.
NES games look great on a clean display, just not in high res. Simple graphics love scanlines, you know. Ever play a Playchoice 10 game or one of those "VS" games in the arcade? That's what an NES would look like with a clean display, and those looked great.

Sorry, but phantom lines or no phantom lines, NES RF is just bad. Heck, NES composite is also bad. Even with composite video, look at any checker pattern on the NES like the bottom of the boxers' shoes in Punchout. It is not a nice solid pattern. The video noise ceates diagonal areas of light and dark, and it just looks bad. Look at anything that's supposed to be a solid vertical edge. More distored ugliness. Look at anything that's supposed to be a plain solid color. It's full of off-color fuzz. It's a shame that one of the greatest consoles of all time has just about the crappiest video signal of all time. It is also a shame that current consoles no longer support low res video, so the NES (or any number of arcade games for that matter) will never propperly be emulated. Some day I will own a Playchoice 10 and figure out how to run NES games in RGB. It can be done, I just don't know how yet.Quote:

The NES's native signal is composite. The video chip converts the RGB to composite before sending it out. There are RGB hacks out there for the NES, but they're mighty technical.
It can be done with a PC10. I suppose you might also be able to replace the video chip, but good luck with that.

Well this game is much much more then NES games, the NES games are just a kick ass extra! Being able to play Clu Clu Land where ever the hell I want is a wonderful thing! If the NES games were only playable in AC, well that would be a different thing. But the fact that you can download them to your GBA, well thats something else completly, its a reason to own a GBA and AC. But yes AC is so much more then NES games, its a wonderous game. Just plain fun.

Well, that's impressive. Not nearly as impressive as GameFAQs users being able to see into the future though. They can tell us that the PS3 will win every system war, and that MS sucks no matter what. Now that my friends, is power.
Seriously, it's like sports. If you don't like football, do you really need to go to a football game to find out you don't like football? No, you know you don't. Same thing with games. Nothing about AC sounds fun, I don't need to try it to know I'll like SFA better. I like everything almost about SFA, and there is no possability in the universe I will like AC more. Same with Tekken 5... I don't have to try it to know I will like Shenmue 3 more, it's just the way it is.
Ethugg: That Circuit City Survival Kit is definately incentive to get the game, it's pretty funny. For everyone that doesn't know, when you buy the game at Circuit City you get what looks like a first aid kit, and inside it is a bottle of green liquid called Fox Juice, a door sign with starfox on it that says "Do not enter, quest has begun" and a roll of toilet paper with tips on the game printed on each sheet. Can anyone make an in depth comparison between Harvest Moon and AC for me, since I loved the HM games, specifically how you could get married and put additions on your house
Circuit City had no Star Fox. No Star Fox beverages. No toilet paper. I was heart broken. If it weren't for the toilet paper I never woulda bothered to go get this game today. I was even gonna send a few pieces to you, Thugg.

Regarding your thread title... you can stop hoping and rest assured that Animal Crossing is a great experience that stands very well on its own merits. The NES games are icing on the cake, and I would love Animal Crossing with or without them.
I can also see how the "game" wouldn't really be everyone's bag, but I hate it when uptight, sexually insecure assholes put it down hard without ever even thinking of trying it. I guess they're too mature for that.

Animal Crossing and Herdy Gerdy are in no way or form similar. Herdy Gerdy is like a Platformer meets the Lemmings. Animal Crossing is like, well Animal Crossing. How the hell did you get Herdy Gerdy out of Animal Crossing?!
Herdy Gerdy sucks. Animal Crossing is amazing.
Just ask yourself, "Does anyone like Herdy Gerdy?" Then look around the first page or two here and see how many people like AC.
To me, Animal Crossing is very similar to Harvest Moon. If you like Harvest Moon, then I think you'll like Animal Crossing. Basically take Harvest Moon's gameplay of maintaining a farm and apply to a whole town. Then add an addiction for finding and buying rare expensive items for your house. That's the point of the whole game. Plus the whole option of trading rare items using codes with other Animal Crossing players makes the game much more enjoyable.
The only thing that may turn you off is that the game plays in real time, meaning you have to wait an actual day to do more things or for something to happen, but that's what makes it seem like a virtual pet. If you plant a tree in Animal Crossing you can't go to bed in the game and have the tree grow the next game day. You'll have to actually go to bed in real life wait a whole real day. There also doesn't appear to be any direct courting of a girl and getting married, but with Animal Crossing you never know what is possible... There's a good many things to do and a lot of little details to discover. Thats why it seems to be such a fun game for me.
I'll take your word (everyone who posted regarding it) as to the merit of non-rf NES. I was just thinking how bad emulated 8-bit games look - especially PC Engine stuff. It all looks so much nicer on a tv.
I don't see a problem with the toploader, I don't get any vertical lines or anything, the picture looks fine. I think it's more a videophile thing, unless only some of the top loaders do the vertical line thing, because mine doesn't. I say just get a top loader and some NES games and be happy. When I was 8 and got an NES I didn't care about that stuff anyway, I just wanted to play some damn Mario. So play some damn Mario people. That is all.
I think I'd rather get Starfox Adventures from Target and get one of those nifty Fox McCloud bobbleheads. I'm a sucker for cool chicken like that :)
