Back in 1990, Midway apparently thought that by 1999, American Gladiators would still be all the rage, but with death and total violence to win cash prizes! Too bad television in 1999 turned out to be even worse than Midway imagined (TV=bad).


Smash TV is one of the best Midway releases of all time. It controls exactly like Robotron 2084- use one joystick to move, the other to shoot. Kill all the bad guys, collect powerups and shields, and collect cash prizes.

An excellent comversion was released for the SNES as Super Smash TV (controlling much like DC Bangai-O). A not-so-hot version also came out on NES. This game, like Robotron, was meant to be played with two sticks...

Ironically, in 1999, Arcade Party Pack was released for the PSX, featuring Smash TV in arcade-perfect form. Best yet, the game supports using the two analog sticks of the Dual Shock! Excellent.

I pumped more quarters (and spend even more time on the snes version) into this game when it came out than was healthy.

Oh, yes, Smash TV. I liked that game, a LOT. Even remember using the 2-controller config on the NES, and pumping lots of quarters into the arcade version.

The Arcade Party Pak had Smash TV in it?! .....damn...I missed it.

I love this game! I have to take the SNES version over the PS version (I own both). Yes, I know the PS version is MUCH closer to the arcade, but the SNES has beefier sounds and the difficulty is much more sane while still remaining quite challenging. Unless I'm overlooking an obvious game, Smash TV is my GotY for 1990. That was a while ago, so if Tetris or something came out that year, forgive me. :)

Yes, lovely game. I played mostly the genesis rev...because of the genesis button scheme they had an option to use two controller in a one player game, so that you could use both D-pads.

I'm rather certain every version of the game allowed the use of two controllers.

I loved this game. I bought the Arcade Party Pack just to play this in arcade perfection with both analog sticks. I just wish they had put the Pseudo sequel Total Carnage on the pack too.

I prefer using the D-pad and buttons for the PS version. Yes, the analog sticks give you the "two joysticks" feel, but more important than that is the digital feel. Analog sticks have never felt right to me in a digital controll scheme. Midway really needs to make asmash TV sequel with true analog controll (not just 8 way shots). I'd be all over that one. :)

I love Smash TV in the arcades and on SNES. I was amazed at how well Beam ported it to the SNES considering it was early 1992 and the system still had major slowdown problems.

Smash TV has always been an instant classic with me... gotta play it when I see it now. Hell, I even finished the NES version (dual-fisted rectangle NES controllers of D00M).

And why was the sequel D.O.A.? Tonight on Unsolved Mysteries...

I liked smash tv a lot. I still play it every time I see it at an arcade.

I love the Arcade Party Pak rev of the game. The ability to use two joysticks is just too good to not love to death.

Right, and I only saw the machine like ONE time in my life and it sure didn't let an impression out of me or get a quarter out of my pocket. (hence my labelling it DOA)... it was like completely different. What happened?

I only played it a couple of times, but I remember it being okay.

It had a very military type of feel I think, and it lost the "gameshow" campy type of aura to it.

I totally agree on barely ever seeing it. I believe I saw it in two arcades my entire life.

You had better believe I love this game, part 2 in the Eugene Jarvis dual controller trilogy. Simply put, this game is god like.

As for Total Carnage, I feel bad for any one who missed out on this one, it's with out a doubt one of my favorite acrade games ever made. If Midway ever releases another compilation disc, I hope they include this game, because it would be orgasmic with the dual shock.

Ahh, I remember all the quarters I used to waste on this thing playing it in the arcades with friends and relatives. Good times :)

Go! Go! Go! Go! Go!

I have the SNES version, and it is easily one of my favorite games for the system. There used to be a Total Carnage arcade cabinent at a local skate center here in Tennessee. I pumped in a few quarters and left unimpressed. I saw the SNES version at Funcoland for $5 a while back. Anyone know if it was a decent port? I'd like to give the game another change sometime down the road...

Whats left to say. It's a great game and a classic.

I always found the NES version to be hilarious. Most of the enemies have been reduced to green dots(The fat men that have bombs strapped to them are now rolling black balls) and there's only 1 song and it usually ends before you finish a level(No it doesn't repeat). All the rpices are either a new toaster or vcr. Yeah, I'll risk my life for that. They really shoulda had a code to be Arnold in this game. The Running Man theme was great.
