Classical Art

Classical art - used to talk about Roman and Greek art that focused on a naturalism and emphasized 'idea' beauty. The Renassaince (sp) was a resurgance of Classical styles.

So...I guess what i'm asking is do you prefer stuff that flows in the Classical vein, do you think it's too restrictive, or do you even care? Think a different style is better? Um...and so on and so on.

nudity rocks so I guess classical is ok by me.

the only thing that irks me a little is how theres this 'ideal' face chiseled into every statue.

i like it and i like classical music along with my heavy metal.

I really like classical art. It was rather limited, however, since there were hardly any paintings. Here's another question: What do you think of the "ideal" woman of that era compared to the ideal woman of today?

Too fat.

I dig art, painting in particular.

I'm not a huge fan of Classical, though, although my favorite painting of all time is Thumbs Down! by Jean-Leon Gerome. I first saw it 15 years ago and became an art fan on the spot. The painting was used as an influence for Ridley Scott's Gladiator, in fact.

I also like Rubens' work a lot..but that's more Romantic, isn't it?

My favorite painting style is Impressionistic landscapes - probably my favorite artist is George Inness (although I love Vermeer's work an awful lot).

The ideal woman of Classical doesn't match my 21st-century ideal...but I can see the attraction (um, I guess).

It seems that the ideal woman was similar to the classical up until the early to mid 1900's.

Not every face is the same. True, early achariac greek sculpture was very very simple, most of it being the exist same boy or girl. The faces where all the same. But classical Greek sculpture saw changes and the faces became different. By the time Hellenistic and Roman sculpture came around faces where very different, with many of them being portraits of people.

I was wondering in what period they broke out of that mold.

The notion of humanity idealized and elevated holds great appeal for me, and I am a huge fan of Classical and Neoclassical styles. Art is certainly not restricted to proportion and balance, but they are quite effective in stirring my soul when celebrated by a capable artist.

It is unfortunate that so many Classical works are lost to humanity's foolish ventures, but there is enough left to tie us strongly to the past and to the endless.
