Surround sound problem
Are the rear speakers supposed to work with gaming surround sound? I got an optical cable for my Xbox today, and the only speakers that are working are the left, right, and subwoofer (center speaker doesn't work either). My dvd player works fine with all the speakers, whats up with that?

It depends on the game, most xbox games do not support dolby digital in game. Find a game you know that is dolby digital to test your system.

Is Halo 5.1? Thats what I used.

Don't forget to set up your Xbox for Dolby Digital output. It's in the menus when you don't have a game in the system.
And actually, every Xbox game I have supports DD. It's PS2 that only select few games have the option.

Halo should DEFINITELY work in 5.1
Follow K3Vs advice and check the audio setup from the Xbox menu...

Doh! Thank you Thundercleese, I mean K3V.

Yep and even if a game doesn't support 5.1, you should at least get dolby surround out of it and hear your other speakers. Go fix it in the dashboard of your xbox

If it's 5.1 (which many Xbox games are) you'll here the difference. Others are 2.0. Just because it says "Dolby Digital" doesn't mean it's 5.1. It has to specify, otherwise it's 2.0. Your surround speakers should work regardless of whether it's 2.0 or 5.1. My guess is that your speakers are configured wrong. Does your receiver have a test tone? try it out. If the surround speakers don't work, you'll need to go to the surround setup menu of your receiver and make sure they're activated. Also, check the type of surround you have activated.
Halo is definitely 5.1, as are Obi-Wan (sounds incredible), Robotech, DTR, and a shitload others.
5.1 is why I watch my DVDs on my Xbox instead of my PS2. Of course, the PS2's shitty playback has a lot to do with that as well...

I got it to work, and I'll try it out tommorow. From what I heard it didn't seem much different from the speakers on the tv.
