Thread: What Is Up With All The Boomer Talk?

  1. I suppose it's because of the limited amount of people I follow on social media, but I keep hearing about Those People but I've never actually run into one. I've seen the Fox News clips so I know they're out there; but from my perspective it's more youngs yelling at clouds than olds.

Maybe I should unblock Yoshi so that I'm getting a more all-encompassing exposure.

  2. I've never run into them IRL either. I keep waiting for someone to demand that I use their pronouns, renounce socialism, or block a street while holding a BLM banner, but it never happens. The closest is that wacko house by my post office with the constantly-evolving Trump shrine on their lawn, but I've never actually seen the people who live there.

Well, I do have this one neighbor a few houses down. Nice enough guy, but one day an unknown person called the town on him for some work he was having done and he stood on his stoop screaming to the mystery snitch that "I'm going to cover your lawn with Trump signs" and "I moved out of a Jew neighborhood to get away from this shit, and now I'm going to have to move out of another Jew neighborhood!" Amazing.

  3. I think social amplifies the grievances, but I’ve met way more conservatives irl who have worms in their brains than I’ve met progressives who demanded “xir” pronouns and Marxism. most people lie in the middle, but seriously, there are sooooo many more boomers/Xers I’ve met that have gone apeshit over the idea of trigger warnings, or pronouns, or brown people taking their jobs, etc etc.

  4. It doesn't justify it at all, so don't read it as me trying to arjue that it does, but I think some of it has to do with the constant movement of the Socially Acceptable Goalposts. Conservatives are dragged kicking and screaming into accepting something, and let out a big breath thinking, well, we're finally here. Everyone can be happy. But then no, that's not good enough, now you gotta act like this: and the this is myriad and often sorta conflicting because within the large group of people demanding change there's several thousand smaller groups demanding This Exact Change. Some of us olds are willing to change and make society better, we'd just like a consensus on how to make that happen because I keep walking my innate biases and prejudices backward and it never seems to be enough.

  5. One thing that's really bugging me lately is this new trend of letting trans women compete in sporting events with - and subsequently destroying - biological women, often easily breaking their world records in the process. Rachel McKinnon is a prime example of this. But of course, if you say anything about it, you're just a transphobic piece of shit.

I am sympathetic to the plight of trans people wanting to have the right to compete in sports and all, but there's got to be a better solution. I just have no idea what it is.

White men don’t have enough in this society so they need all the world records for women’s sports too.

  8. The solution is to base their categorization on biology rather than feelings.
Transwomen can compete with other transwomen.

    Are you?

I'm sure it's my social media exposure, but I've seen your point brought up many times, but haven't really seen anyone calling it out as transphobic. When it is, it's because the person who brought it up was calling the transwoman a guy.

Ultimately, trying to split competition into two genders when they're a spectrum is going to cause problems. But maybe, if you only make one line, it's something like "testosterone exposure" and you lump cismen, transmen, and transwomen into the same competition (I never heard anyone complain a transman was dominating a male sport). I remember in 2009, Caster Semenya was causing a bunch of controversy after winning a running championship and they did sex testing, though she's lived her whole life as a woman. It's an interesting wikipedia read, at least.

Trans issues fascinate me because of how some people think of gender as a binary, and treat trans like a switch, and others think of it as a spectrum, where there are degrees of masculine/feminine, and there are anarchists that try to act like it doesn't exist and yet gender is the one thing that stand out about them. Everyone's got an opinion and has to walk on eggshells about it and the poor boomers are still trying to figure out bisexuality.

  10. It’s almost as if sports can be a problematic cultural institution that widens the gap of inequalities and divisions that are already present in society!

As far as trans/intersex/etc individuals in sports, it’s a not new issue, but social/media likes to reframe it as one. IP sent me the story of this person a few days ago, coincidentally: https://theolympians.co/tag/ewa-klobukowska/

There’s also been problems with people not fitting into certain categories because of hormonal conditions, such as the case of Francine Niyonsaba, who has elevated levels of testosterone naturally and is being hounded to take hormone suppressants. It really isn’t as simple as “now this person has an unfair advantage because they decided to switch genders.” There will always be that person who takes advantage of their status in order to be fraudulent or somehow gain an unfair advantage. We can’t operate assuming that every trans person in sports is doing such.

I’m not actually sure if the issue is solvable, because we will need to determine if we adhere to one hegemonic gender category, or two, three, unlimited, etc. If we determine that there is two genders that can compete and THATS IT, this potentially alienates a huge swath of very gifted athletes. And hey, that may be what society agrees on. But it would kind of suck for those who aren’t easily categorized.
