Thread: NEC/TTi System Appreciation Thread (PCE, TG16, SG, PC-FX, etc.)

  1. Gotta talk about Bonk, too. Bonk's quality. I remember being amazed by the gigantic sprites in Bonk 3.

I'm pretty sure NES Bonk was made just to prove a point. SNES Bonk was really terrible, too.

For whatever reason, Blazing Lazers gets lumped in with the Soldiers pretty regularly. I like it, but yeah, it's definitely overrated. Thinking back, Final Soldier was one of the very first games I ever imported.

The Duo was the system to own if you were into shooters. Gate of Thunder is still the best hori I've ever played.

Edit: The soundtrack still kills, too.

  3. I also enjoyed Blazing Lazers but there are serious balance problems in stage 9- even if you play the Normal Dog setting which is a bit too easy until then. Lose a ship there? Good luck getting decently powered-up again, especially from a checkpoint. Hard Human mode is about right.

Much more could have been done with Strider on the Arcade card, especially given the quality of the earlier Genesis 8 Megabit cart. There's generally no parallax (the Balrog stage is a good exception and the one place where the TG16 ACD holds its own... why couldn't the rest of the game be like this?), and the control feels a bit off. Someone got lazy. This doesn't look like it uses anywhere near the full 2 MB RAM.

  4. Wasn't that supposed to be a supergrafx game that got ported to Arcade CD?

  5. Also, no Turbo thread is complete without Johnny Turbo. Yes, the homo erotic sensation that is Johnny Turbo just can't be ignored.

The third panel of the above was my avatar for a long time.

Finally, I leave you with the REAL™ Johnny Turbo, John Brandstetter.

Worth it alone for the introduction to the, of course, now popular term "VHD Shooter." I bet you didn't know that the folks at NEC coined that one, did ya?
There's actually some neat proto stuff in that vid. I wonder what nerd has that stuff in his closet now.

  6. Good call on Johnny Turbo!

  7. Feka really is the worst.
    Donk

  8. The Turbo is probably my favorite system, it was basically a NES on steroids. Parasol Stars, Soldier series, New Adventure Island, Download, Air Zonk, Override, Dragon's Curse, Legendary Axe 2, Atomic Robo Kid, Ninja Gaiden, and the Thunder games are excellent.

Managed to amass a collection before prices went too apeshit but would still like to track down Beyond Shadowgate and 1941 ( if anything to justify still owning a Supergrafx).

  9. OMG I NEED TO GO TO COMIC CON!!!!!1!111

  10. Holy fuck that video was awesome! Thanks for sharing!

EDIT: I mean the really old one.
