*shrug*
Ultimately I would like to get the Evangelion Death and Rebirth boxed set but holyshitexpensive.
You don't say.
I get collecting them because of the packaging and supplements. That big Akira cover certainly pleases the eye more than some plastic DVD or blu ray. It's the watching of them that I don't understand.
The thought of choosing to watch a widescreen movie in low res on a 4:3 CRT with either massive black bars (or worse, pan and scan) when there are higher fidelity alternatives of the same movies probably on your shelves and in your Netflix queues, makes me a little angry.
Not hating. I have silly hobbies too. Just trying to wrap my mind around this particular one.
I find the picture quality to be perfectly nice, HD for HD's sake doesn't really set my heart a flutter. I'm watching The Third Man right now (which was shot in 4:3, so YOU have to watch it window boxed) and I'm not wanting for picture quality. The film grain that's there should be there and there isn't a digital compression artifact in sight.
I'd argue I'm getting a better picture than you are streaming video on an uneven connection.

On the 'intangibles' front, the physical object-ness to it is really satisfying, a movie becomes an object with weight and texture, something to be examined and appreciated --unlike those weightless clicky noises on your endless Netflix queue. There's an inherent quality to it.

Is this the same Yeller who chucked his DVD cases? You're about the last TNLer I'd expect to hear these things from.
I've always had a vinyl collection. I see this as an analog to that.
DVD cases are tacky garbage.
You know what's worse? BluRay cases. Holy Jumping Jesus those are terrible.
But! This thread isn't about those.

Always wanted to see that...
They're pretty affordable as long as you can buy local, I know some players were for sale in the Mission when I was looking. Shipping is awful on the players, they are a million pounds and huge.
A friend is giving me his copy of Kentucky Fried Movie tomorrow! I am excite, best Zucker Bros.
