That's way better than 3 feet, she was no fool.
Is lag that much of an issue these days? I bought a 55" (which is under 4 feet across?) JVC tv super cheap at Costco a couple of years ago. I didn't research or nothing and playing games on it seems perfectly fine. Granted, I don't play rhythm or fightman games on it.

Just find a display with game mode. It'll turn off all of the added processing that creates lag. My 52" Samsung I got in 2009 has @ 5ms response time and a game mode. It worked just fine with Guitar Heroe 2 (PS2) being ran on a PS3.
That el cheapo JVC has a game mode.
I use game mode for everything.
All that post processing and interpolation nonsense just makes everything look weird and unnatural.

It can vary wildly from set to set. Some even with game mode are in the 3 - 4 frames of lag range. Modern gaming takes that shit into account, so you don't have to worry so much on that front, but if you're playing retro stuff 3 - 4 frames of lag can make even non-rhythm or fighting games unplayable. It just really depends on your needs.
