    Well I've played more RPG's that I can count starting waaay back with the ole pc stuff (woo text based adventures!) all the way up to the current crop of RPG's.

    I've owned just about every system imaginable at one point or another.

    I've spent time struggling through import only rpg's back in the day with a huge printed fan "translations", and more recently I've waited paitently for english translation patches.

    I could sit here and list off all the games I've played and owned, but I really don't think we need to get into an internet pissing contest (more than it already is).

    I'd guess that all this would add up to a "full spectrum of RPGs", which would give me a pretty good idea of what I do, and don't like.

    And guess what?

    After all this I still *gasp* like Final Fantasy!

    It's amazing isn't it?

    I must just have the worst fucking taste in the whole world huh?

    Man, I'm such a wreck...

    I'll be back in a couple of hours, I need to go play Final Fantasy X with the Prima Strategy guide because I still just can't understand this whole "rpg" genre...

  3. Just got back from work and the comic book store. Jesus, this thread went from making me happy to dashing my hopes under its spiked heels. I really wanted FF 1 + 2 to come out here just for part one; 2 can kiss my ass. Frogacuda hit the nail on the head when it came to describing its faults. The level up system would have worked if the enemies beat on more than one specific person. When I first played it, one of my characters had 1000 hp and the others had 200 or so. I had to spend hours beating on my own guys to raise their energy. Magic also worked the same way; when you used it, you got 1 point; 100 points and it went up a level, up to 16 I think. I had to cheat by setting a character to use a spell, going to the next guy and going back, as the point still counted. I honestly played all the way through it, but that is only because I have a thing for finishing what I've started.

    Nope, I've been around for over a year, since just before the GG jump.

    Somehow I missed that thread, but I probably wouldn't have commented anyway, as random battles aren't a huge sore spot for me. As long as they're not obnoxious, I don't mind them.

    That thread does explain some of your thoughts on things, but do you really expect everyone here to remember that? Without that thread, your previous posts here kind of just made me go .

  5. Telling people that liking something is wrong isn't a great thing to do, but Tsubaki has a point about the whole 15 year old engine thing. I will refuse to buy a Final Fantasy game if they continue to have the same crappy random battles. Sometimes they are worth playing through for the plot, music etc, but anyone that actually likes playing through dozens of hours of those battles is a masochist in my eyes. I haven't played through a game with random battles since Xenogears, and i imagine it is gonna stay that way.

  6. I hope if they do make a FFVII-2 that it contains the same battle system as FFVII did. I didn't like the battle system of 10,. 9 and 8 were ok but my favorite was 7. I liked 7 so much that I literaly hate everything after it. To me they're all trash. I wish I could get into them cause they are good games but I'm to obsessed with 7.

    thats funny cause I rather like the random battles and the same old battles systems. Kind of like the old saying goes, if it's not broken don't fix it.

    Because Matsuno is co-developing the whole game, not the battle system. Although Sakaguchi's still involved. I'm not going to rush out and buy it the day it comes out, but I'll definitely be keeping my eye on it.

    Oh, and guys, just stick Tsubaki on your ignore list. The guy is positively frothing at the mouth with elistist nonsense. And I've hated every FF game after 6.

  8. c. Interaction? What pisses me off more about the views is, you have no clue if you can interact with the backgrounds. You see a building with doors. Is that a real building with a door you can walk through, or is it just part of the decorational background? Well, you've got no choice but to walk there and see. There's no intuitiveness about it. Sometimes you'll be able to walk thru the door, and other times you'll be hitting a "wall".
    I've never had the problem of not being able to see the backgrounds clearly in any of the games.
    d. Speaking of backgrounds, they are often rather beautiful. FFIX's backgrounds are mostly handdrawn and look great. And then you look at the foreground characters, Zidane, Eiko, etc and they're pixellated blobs. I didn't even know what Eiko was supposed to look like until an hour and a half later when they showed her in a FMV clip.

    Why is it that almost every other company has put significant effort into making battles enjoyable, but Square does not? Panzer Dragoon Saga has you carefully consider position, and the cost of moving your unit is that your option of attacking is delayed a bit. The Lunars are like SRPGs without the grid. The Grandias also have you consider timing, where what you do affects the enemy. The Growlansers have a similar system, except you can change your command at any moment. The Tales series has more of a real-time combat system, etc etc.
    Lunar plays nothing nothing like an SRPG. The only similarity is that you can move back and forth , but I'm pretty sure you can also do that in FF.Plus you have stuff like limit breaks and real time(with 3 difficulty settings) battles(why did they do in ff10?) which make the battles themselves more complex.Job systems/materia systems also add to the complexity of the battle systems.
    I'm not saying that FF is deep or anything......the battle systems of Grandia , Valkrie Profile , and Persona are deeper and all , but it's not as bad as you make it out to be. At least not to me.
    And on the subject of random battles, why does it even exist anymore? Is it fun to get pelted with enemies every few steps as you're going from Point A to Point B? It's kind of funny how Square created Chrono Trigger and that totally changed the RPG world, and became an instant classic. Then as they continued making their FFs, they didn't do a darn thing. It's like "Oh yeah, we encourage you to play and to explore, but we'll punish you by making you fight needless and dull battles every five seconds."
    Random battles suck , but I dont they make games unplayable.
    RPGs, to me, are composed of three elements:

    1. Story
    2. Exploration
    3. Battles
    You say that Lunar is superior to FF and all......but the exploration element of that game is pathetic(same with FF ).
    I dont have any fixed standards to what I look forward in an RPG.I enjoyed Xenogears because of its story ,Grandia for its dungeons and battles ,and Diablo for its own reasons.
    I've enjoyed FF 7 & 9 mostly for their stories(I can see where people who dont like the stories come from) ,and exploration(the envirnoments werent all that great , but I liked the backdrops alot)elements.


    And you have no right to bash FF for not being deep , if SC5P2 is your GOTY.

    I actually thought the battle system in X rocked. I loved the super-fast pace, the ability to switch your party in and out (stolen from BoF4 I might add), and the number of random battles wasn't that bad.

    Everytime I play PSO I yearn for a new offline PSO game...
