  1. Awards Night 03

The NHL Awards were tonight. I think they did a better job than usual. All of the awards went to worthy candidates. I hope Foppa takes that Hart trophy says "kthx" and signs with MoDo.

It's great to see that justice was finally served and Brodeur got his long overdue Vézina!

Whoa, was about to leave this thread when I saw this.

Are you on crack, man? The level of difficulty of the shots that Gigučre faced compared to the paltry amount that Brodeur faced aren't even remotely close.

The Devil's were CLEARLY the better team by nearly everyone's estimation and it went to 7 games. Gigučre faced MUCH MUCH MUCH higher quality scoring chances than Brodeur did and he single handedly got them to the finals and made it close.

Kudos to the Devils, they deserved to win. But to characterize Gigučre as "lousy" is just fucking lame.

  3. at least somebody finally seems to have watched what i did instead of having the devils fanboy goggles on.

and my local newspaper has filled the sports section for the past 3 days with nothing but rupp (since he played for our ohl team the otters before getting drafted).

Gigučre was great in the first three rounds and I am not knocking him at all. I actually like the guy. If you go back further in the thread you can see I was singing his praises earlier in the playoffs. Getting that team to the Finals was an amazing accomplishment............ but in the Finals he did not play well at all. Yes, he did face a better team who got a good number of chances.... but come on now, the Devils are far from an offensive powerhouse! They are not the 70's Canadiens or the 80's Oilers. The Devils are a low scoring team with no offensive stars and they managed to score almost as many goals on him in the Finals as he gave up in the first three rounds combined. He never intimidated them. He never got in their heads. He didn't steal any games. He let in 19 goals in 7 games (2.53 GAA!!) and had 4 one sides losses. The Devils scored a lot of soft goals and exposed his weaknesses - staying way back in his net, his inability to use his stick well, his top half coverage, and so on. Simply put, the Devils had more trouble scoring on Patrick Lalime.

In my opinion he should not have been named MVP of the playoffs when he didn't play well on the biggest stage of all. Even the people who supported him getting the Conn Smythe for "getting the Ducks to the Finals" and "beating the Stars and Wings" admit that he didn't do well in the Finals. I don't see how anyone could have watched those games and thought otherwise. He was lousy but he got the honour simply for taking the underdog that far which was a hell of an accomplishment, but still.. he could not finish the race.

It's not that important though. The Devils got the only trophy that really matters.

  5. ... and another thing

From Jack Todd in yesterday's Montréal Gazette: "The Conn Smythe, however, should have gone to Koho. The hockey-equipment maker had a deal more to do with the success of the Mighty Ducks than goaltender Jean-Sébastian Gigučre."

I think that Gigučre played incredibly in Rounds 1-3 and deserves full credit for what he acccomplished...... but its still funny.

The NHL does need to crack down on the Stay-Puft Goalie look though. At least two of the worst offenders in that department - Roy and Hašek - have retired.

  6. whats wrong with big pads? if big guys were shooting pucks going 70-100mph at my body, i'd want the biggest fucking pads you could get.

    Brodeur is just.... really brave.

  7. didnt they say that giggy uses one of the smallest gloves tho?

and dont put hasek in the same sentence as roy. roy was a brick form plain and simple. hasek was nowhere near him. other brick goalies? probably every philly goalie since hextall (not including him.) snow was unbelieveably brick shaped and so was chechmanek (sp).

Hasek doesn't belong in the same sentence as Roy no matter what the context. Hasek was the single most overrated player in any sport that I can remember, and I have been actively watching the sports for roughly 22-23 years now. He was never better than the fourth best goalie behind Roy, Brodeur, and Belfour, and I would even put Joseph above him. Hasek never should have won a single Vezina, let alone the five he did, and if any goalie should ever win the Hart, which I don't believe they should, it should never have been him. The only difference between his game and Cechmanek's is that Hasek's rabbit's foot worked better.

  9. Question

The Phoenix Coyotes have finally unveiled their new logo and uniforms today. I very much appreciate the simplicity of the design, especially coming off what they used to wear. I also think the colours are pretty nice too. There is nothing garish or offensive and it's certainly an improvement over the old design.

I am undecided about the new logo. I am glad that it's not "xtreme" and that there are no toothy smiles, pucks, or sticks in the logo. I like that it is simple and has simple 2D colouring.... but it is a strange shape and I wonder how it will look next to other logos. The uniform itself is decent. Simple and classy looking is good, but this may be a bit too simple? I dunno. I do like the 3 stripes. My only real complaint is that I think they should have used the sand colour more, and less of the white (esp. on the home-red one). Overall I'd say it's decent and non-offensive. It could grow on me. It already has a bit. I'll reserve final judgement til we see it on the ice however.

  10. Hey, at least it's not as ugly as the old one. It's a lot more appealing than most team's crappy ass 3rd jerseys.

On a side note, hockey exhibition games are just a couple of days away.
