Thread: Jyhad / Vampire : The Eternal Struggle

  1. There really should be an on-card rarity indicator. I don't want to have to sit in front of the computer with the WW site open while flipping through new cards. It's really inconvenient.

But at least there's a list. It's better than nothing.

Hmph. You're going to have to refresh my memory. What's a D action? You know, it's been such a long time since I've played, when I was reading through the rules book that came with the deck, I didn't remember a damned thing about it. I have a long way to go if I want to get back up to snuff.

And something that might make you smile: InQuest Gamer (Wizard's table top game magazine [CCGs, CFGs, Board Games, etc.]) rated the top 10 CCGs of all time in this month's issue. Guess what took the number one spot?

    What does "antitribu" mean?

Bah! Blast it! The WW site says Yong-Sun's base card is only available as a promo.

Be sure to download the Elder Library Deck Builder (ELDB). Not only does it have a complete searchable database of every VTES card ever printed, from Jyhad to BH, but it has an excellent deckbuilding tool usable for creating textfiles and decklists ready for IRC plugin. Look around TheLasombra's VTES page (link contained earlier in this thread) for the link.

It's in there. A directed action, or D action, is any action directed at another Methuselah, or any action so designated by card text. Bleeding is a D action, for example. D actions are only blockable (in the absence of exigent circumstances) by minions controlled by the Methuselah at which the action is directed, whereas nondirected actions (such as votes, hunting actions, and rescuing your own vampires from torpor) are blockable by either your predator or prey.

I know! I was quite pleased to see that. Anything that will increase VTES's exposure is a good thing.

    What does "antitribu" mean?
The antitribu are the "anti-clans", the corrupted members of the founding Camarilla clans (and independent clans) that now claim membership in the Sabbat. So a Nosferatu antitribu is just a Nosferatu who happens to be Sabbat.

Bah! Blast it! The WW site says Yong-Sun's base card is only available as a promo.
Yeah, the original Yong Sun was available only in the hard-to-find Sabbat set. I'm lucky enough to own two copies of him. WW was originally going to print the base Yong Sun in the Nossie Antitribu starter, but screwed up and left him out. They might be doing some kind of "exchange" program for the base version; I'm not sure if that's still going to happen.

  3. ELDB, eh? I'll have to give it a shot. I won't be d/l'ing it from this comp, though. Way too slow.

Does White Wolf still print the VTES cards? I was under the impression that they did, but if they did it should be much easier to find, no?

Directed actions. Still doesn't ring a bell, but your explanation is very good. I'm getting the hang of it (again), but I don't think just reading the rules will enable me. I'll need to play a few games before I'm able to stand again.

You read the InQuest article, then? How the Hell Magic scored so low I'll never know, but VTES deserved the spot that it took. I was very happy when I first read it.

Have you ever played a Game of Thrones? That one scored pretty high, too, and the write-up made me want to try it out, but I don't know where to find it. I could look, but I'm being pretty freaking lazy right now.

And what's the difference between a Sabbat and a Camarilla?

You know, for someone who says he's into the whole Vampire mythos, I sure as crap don't know a whole lot.

Yeah. I read something about the exchange program on the site as well, but I couldn't actually find any info on it.

    You have two, eh? Nice.

Oh! Have you finished Gehenna yet? What did you think?

  4. WW is printing them, but remember that WW isn't a huge company and they don't have anywhere near the marketing muscle of WotC, so it's tough for them to convince retailers to carry the game.

They're trying to decrease the time in between expansions to about 6 months so the game will have more shelf exposure. That's why the Gehenna expansion is only 2 months away.

Game of Thrones? Haven't tried it but I've heard good things.

Oh! Have you finished Gehenna yet? What did you think?
Just picked up the novel again after laying off it for a few weeks. It's great. Lots of cameo appearance from canon characters, most of whom die horribly.

  5. ICQing this conversation would be one hundred billion times easier.

But I don't have ICQ. Or IRC. Or AIM.

  6. Decided to bump this thread after seeing dog$'s avatar.

Hey dog$, have you come back to the game? There's a new expansion coming out in November. African vampires and new bloodlines aplenty.

Here are some pics of the promo cards, one of which is available now in Scrye:

  7. So, say I wanted to start in on this CCG, what should I buy? What decks are the best to start with? Is the Player's Guide worth a damn? Someone give me the scoop.
    Time for a change

  8. God I really love a good CCG...I admit that I've only played Magic: The Gathering, but I spent so much money and time on that and it was fun as hell. I never really got tired of the game either, it's just that my friends slowly slipped out of the game and it became more difficult to find someone to play it with. Right next to my pc tower I have a box full of MTG cards. I have about four-thousand cards. I even remember one Christmas where my girl went out and bought me the entire Exodus expansion set...

g0zen, I'll grab some if you decide to pick this up, let me know.

Yeah I'm definiately interested, if I can get some help getting started from the experts here we'll get cracking. There might be some other people on campus who play, I'll check the Gaming Society, but I think most of those guys are Magic players.

Check the links in this thread. Somewhere there should be a link to the VEKN registry, which will help you find players in your area. The current VEKN Prince of Nashville is Michael Driver, m.driver@vanderbilt.edu; he might be a good person to contact.

The Player's Guide (assuming you mean this one) is excellent. Some of the best players in the world contributed to it. Do not buy the old WotC-published "Jyhad" edition, which is completely different and out-of-date.

As far as starter decks, a lot depends on which clans you like, but some of the best (in terms of card composition and competitiveness) include the Lasombra (from Sabbat War), Tremere antitribu (from Black Hand), and Ventrue (from Camarilla Edition). For boosters, begin with Camarilla Edition and then pick up whatever boosters complement the clans you're interested in (Sabbat: Sabbat War, Black Hand, possibly Kindred Most Wanted; Independent: Final Nights, Kindred Most Wanted). Stay away from sets like Gehenna and Bloodlines until you know what you're doing.

I can provide more detailed info if you're interested in a particular clan.
