I'm in the midst of writing a novel I started a few months ago, called
A Doom of One's Own. The title's supposed to be jokey - I was reading some Ian Fleming, Tom Clancy, stuff like that, and I figured it'd be fun to try to write a novel intended to be commercial, appeal to people, that sort of thing.
I figured it'd be more of a challenge than writing a novel/poem/short story that was supposed to be appreciated, more than enjoyed.
I started by throwing in a bunch of silly literary references though, just for my own enjoyment, (Virginia Woolf, Ralph Ellison, TS Eliot, James Joyce, Kingsley Amis, Fielding), and the references sort of merged into a plot. I'm now happily ripping off Fleming and the thing is, in a way, very slowly rolling along. I don't know when I'll be able to finish it, but I'm enjoying the process.
