Western console games have never been great, and are clearly getting better. I don't think Konami, Capcom, Square, Enix, Sega, etc. give a damn how good American PC games are.

Does that mean Vectrex 2 is right around the corner?

  3. Ah, Lucas, you're one in a million.
    Here's my tribute:

this Square/Enix merger sounds like great news and as usual has awesome implications for Nintendo.

i'm sure you all can agree now that a Square vs. Enix RPG is in the works for GCN. fuck, I mean with Sega's & Capcom's ties to Nintendo, they could all be co-partners. let's call it Quintforce for now. Capcom has such a history, plus they have 5 new GCN exclusives. also remember Sega's experience with Hundred Swords and PSO. it's not out of the question that in one year everyone'll be taking their cubes online just for this. imagine you'll lead your team of classic Square or Enix characters against online opponents.

i know, call this speculation. but you just know something's good in the works for GCN, especially with their unsurpassed 2003 line-up and all.

    [/tribute]
on-topic: I think it's way too early to speculate whether this merger will be good/bad for American vs Japenese developers, Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, etc.

  4. Although I'd love for Lucas' specualtion to be true, I don't see any proof for it. I mean, western games have always sold more here than in Japan, stuff like Metroid Prime and GTA:VC, while being good, I really don't see it making the Japanese developers shit their pants (unless someone wants to show me an interview that says so). Square Enix is an intriguing development which we'll see how it pans out...it would be too funny to stick to Sony if DQ and perhaps in FF jumped ship. Capcom support, while awesome, continues what they did with DC in a sense. And realistically, though we are getting some cool games, GC 3rd party support is still pretty pitiful. If Nintendo can get Konami back or something, then I'll be a believer.

Again, I'd love to see Nintendo, Sega, Capcom, and a bunch of big 3rd parties kick Sony's ass, but I don't see any proof of it yet.

Capcom was the biggest 3rd party developer on the dreamcast, obviously. But did you know that Capcom only developed ONE original game for the Dreamcast that was released in America? The gamecube already has 7 or so(either released or announced). Capcom's biggest franchise is exclusive to the gamecube. In terms of system-selling software, I'd say the cube has better support from Capcom than the DC ever did.

If Nintendo can get Konami back or something, then I'll be a believer.
An announcement should be coming very soon. And its not like Konami has been absent from the cube. They've released a few games already, they have just been second rate games.

I'm not exactly sure why some developers are beginning to lean towards the Cube, but it seems to be happening more every day. Perhaps out of respect for Nintendo, more friendly hardware, money from Nintendo, fear of a Sony monopoly, or a combination of those.

EDIT- I'd just like to point out that, together, the 3rd party developers control the fate of each console to a large degree. They could basically make whichever system they wanted to an instant success. Just something to consider.

  7. Okay, seriously, can someone explain to me the relationship between Square and EA? Are they one company or partners only for certain games? If EA is an American and Square a Japanese company, then how could this merger be targetted at reducing American developer dominance in North America?

EA publishes Square games in America. Square publishes EA games in Japan. Thats about the extent of their relationship.

These are interesting times in the videogame industry, that is for sure.
I absolutely agree with everything you said.

Now that I think about it, how many original games has Capcom released on Sega systems IN GENERAL? Most of their games have been arcade ports, by far (at least their most revered games anyway).

Which game are you referring to? I can't remember any that weren't arcade games besides Code Veronica and I thought that was developed by Sega.

  11. I got a Dreamcast just for RE C:V... imagine how happy I am now that I have/am getting 2 new RE games and a remake. I'm 3x happier with my Cube than my DC.

EDIT: Code Veronica wasn't developed by Sega... it was handled by Flagship as usual, I think.
    Name: Rock
    Town: Arcadia

  12. just wondering how you would have a "vs." rpg....

  13. Enix bought Square

who knows whats going to happen

    i sure as hell dont

I do agree that Japanese developers seem to be wanting to work together to stop this "american" invasion (EA, MS, ETC)

I really did find the capcom title of "for the growth of the industry, for the gamecube" very interesting and i guess it kinda says something about either capcoms feelings or Mikami's feelings

Im not surprised with the Capcom stuff though Nintendo platforms other than the N64 have always been capcoms home liek some one else said i dont think theyve put a single original title on a sega system

and its pretty well known Capcom has never been happy with Sony so im not surprised that Capcom is throwing support to the Cube now that Nintendo has a system using disc drives instead of cartridges

I dont know if this Square Enix thing has anything to do with Nintendo i think for Square it has more to do with getting out of Sony's grip and to battle EA

I mean since the Sony buying what the hell has Square done FFX, FFXI, and Kingdom Hearts granted im sure losing money on TSW had something to do with that too

but if you look at Square even in last generation they did so much more and branched out more

I dont know if sony had anything to do with this change but honestly i wouldnt be surprised if Sony was pushing Square to just do FF but who knows

Only time will tell what all this means and what will happen

I hope what ever happens it means growth for the industry and not just one company in charge of it all
    Where I play

Seriously, though, I think this all *may* be good news for Nintendo - we'll just have to and see.

I think the relationship between Square and EA is set to expire soon.

  16. EA will get it back if so. No chance in hell they won't.

  17. I say there's a pretty good chance, considering Square will no longer exist.

  18. They're not like some like some NPC moster or anything.. "Where's Square? I guess it's gone... I'll just randomly re-target and gather the publsihing rights to some other completely unrelated developement house." Excpet Mosters don't care about publishing games and probably don't even play RPGs.

  19. Well... I don't care about the EA thing at this point... the merger, man!
    This' gonna be fun...
